Aerobic Dance Injuries: A Retrospective Study of Instructors and Participants.

In brief: In this study shoes, floor types, and individual physical differences were evaluated for their effects on aerobic dance injuries. The injury frequency was 75.9% for instructors and 43.3% for students. The shin was the most common site of injury in both groups. Overall, 60% of the injuries in the student group and 52% of injuries in the instructor group occurred below the knee. Most injuries were not debilitating, and few required medical treatment. The authors concluded that resilient but stable floor surfaces, proper shoes, and moderating the frequency of participation can prevent i

A framework for analyzing the "choreomusical" relationship between dance and music.

Dance and music are foundational human behaviors that likely co-evolved as intertwined modes of social communication, artistic expression, and collective coordination. Despite their intertwined nature, dance and music are typically analyzed in isolation from one another, both in research studies and in applied settings. I present here a proposal for a general framework for conceptualizing the cross-modal relationship between dance and music. This framework is called SpREE and is based on the analysis of four key dimensions relating dance and music: Space, Rhythm, Entrainment, and Expression. S

Feasibility of an amazonian dance protocol for people with Parkinson's disease.

Dance is a promising non-pharmacological intervention for people with Parkinson's disease (PwP), enhancing mobility, balance, coordination, and cognition. However, the feasibility and safety of Amazonian dances have not yet been evaluated. This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of the Amazonian Dance Protocol (ADp) for PwP in two Brazilian regions, North and South. Over 12 weeks, 24 PwP attended ADp sessions twice weekly. Feasibility outcomes included recruitment, adherence, acceptability, and safety, assessed through questionnaires and interviews. The study reached an 89% enrol

Revealing the dance of NLRP3: spatiotemporal patterns in inflammasome activation.

The nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich repeat, and pyrin domain containing-protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome is a multiprotein complex that plays a critical role in the innate immune response to both infections and sterile stressors. Dysregulated NLRP3 activation has been implicated in a variety of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, including cryopyrin-associated periodic fever syndromes, diabetes, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and cancer. Consequently, fine-tuning NLRP3 activity holds significant therapeutic potential. Studies have implicated several o

Strength and conditioning in dance: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

To assess the evidence for the effect of strength and conditioning on physical qualities and aesthetic competence in dance populations, three electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, SPORTDiscus) were searched (until September 2022) for studies that met the following criteria: (i) dancers aged >16 years; (ii) structured strength and conditioning intervention; and (iii) with physical qualities and aesthetic competence as outcome measures. Methodological quality and risk of bias of the included studies were assessed through the systematic review tool "QualSyst". Meta-analyses of effect sizes (Hedge

Sleep Characteristics in Dance Students Related to Psychological Inflexibility.

Introduction: Dance, as a performance activity, is associated with various problems. Among these challenges, sleep disturbances are notably prevalent. Aims: This study aimed to explore the potential relationship between sleep characteristics-specifically chronotype and subjective sleep quality- and psychological inflexibility in dance students. Methods: This research adopted a cross-sectional design using non-probabilistic sampling. The data were collected in paper format by visiting public conservatories and private academies, and online. One hundred fourteen dance students, with a mean age o

Unveiling the intricate dance: Obesity and TNBC connection examined.

Amid the dynamic field of cancer research, various targeted therapies have proven crucial in combating breast cancer, the most prevalent cancer among women globally. Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) stands out from other types of breast cancer due to the absence of three key receptors on the cell surface (progesterone, estrogen, and HER2). Researchers are working on finding ways to address TNBC's elusive biomarkers and minimize the damage caused by the disease through treatments like chemotherapies and targeted pathway receptors. One connection that should receive more attention is the lin

Therapeutic Dance for the Healing of Sexual Trauma: A Systematic Review.

Therapeutic dance has been increasingly used as a treatment modality for sexual trauma, yet its evidence-based efficacy has not yet been catalogued. We therefore conducted a systematic review to summarize the existing evidence for therapeutic dance as an intervention for healing after sexual trauma. We searched 5 major databases to identify intervention studies on the use of therapeutic dance for individuals with histories of sexual trauma. Studies were included based on the following criteria: 1) the study involves individuals who have been exposed to sexual trauma; 2) the study reports on an

Force Attenuation Properties of Padded Dance Support Socks.

Foot injuries occur frequently in dancers, and researchers have investigated different protective measures to reduce their incidence. Research has primarily focused on ballet, but foot injuries also are common in modern and contemporary dance where footwear is not worn. While padded dance socks are a potential solution, the extent to which they provide force reduction for the feet is unknown.
Purpose: This study investigates the extent to which padded dance support socks can reduce force on the foot during a dance sequence and when landing from a sauté jump.
Methods: Twenty-one injur

Epidemiology of injuries connected with dance: a critical review on epidemiology.

The aim of this review was to identify all types of injuries connected to the gestures of dancers and understand the associated biomechanical patterns. This is the first step in the definition of a prevention program that lacks in this kind of athletic activity. A search of Medline/PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane database from 1990 to 2019 using the search terms ''dance and injuries'' and ''dance and injuries and epidemiology'' initially resulted in 601 citations. A total of 16 articles were eligible for a review. All health problems that lead to stop the activity of a dancer are classified a

Adaptation to Damaging Dance and Repeated-Sprint Activity in Women.

Brown, MA, Howatson, G, Keane, KM, and Stevenson, EJ. Adaptation to damaging dance and repeated-sprint activity in women. J Strength Cond Res 30(9): 2574-2581, 2016-The repeated bout effect (RBE) refers to the prophylactic effect from damaging exercise after a single previous bout of exercise. There is a paucity of data examining the RBE in women, and investigations using exercise paradigms beyond isolated eccentric contractions are scarce. In light of the limited literature, this investigation aimed to determine whether 2 different sport-specific exercise bouts would elicit a RBE in women. Tw

Social Dancing and Incidence of Falls in Older Adults: A Cluster Randomised Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The prevention of falls among older people is a major public health challenge. Exercises that challenge balance are recognized as an efficacious fall prevention strategy. Given that small-scale trials have indicated that diverse dance styles can improve balance and gait of older adults, two of the strongest risk factors for falls in older people, this study aimed to determine whether social dance is effective in i) reducing the number of falls and ii) improving physical and cognitive fall-related risk factors. METHODS AND FINDINGS: A parallel two-arm cluster randomized controlled

Elephants dancing in my head: a developmental approach to children's concepts of specific pains.

The present study produced an empirically derived, developmental continuum of children's understanding of specific pains. Subjects of 5 age groups: preschool (ages 3-4), first grade (ages 6-7), third grade (ages 8-10), sixth grade (ages 11-12) and college freshmen (ages 18-23) were interviewed with open-ended questions. The subjects were questioned extensively about 3 specific types of pain: an injury (skinned knee), a medical intervention (injection), and an illness (headache). Subjects were asked to describe each pain, tell why the pain hurt, and state the value of the pain. Their answers we

Dancing with danger-how honeybees are getting affected in the web of microplastics-a review.

Anthropogenic activities have negatively impacted the ecosystem dramatically over the last few decades. The environment is becoming more contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, and microplastics (MPs) as a result of the swift rise in industrialization and urbanisation. These contaminants are present everywhere in the ecosystem, affecting every living creature, from aquatic to terrestrial to aerial. Recently, the widespread of microplastics in the environment has raised serious concerns about the contamination of honey bees by these tiny particles of plastic. Honeybees are the major pollina
