Data of small molecule compounds and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) detected in Deer Antler Velvet of Malayan Deer (Cervus timorensis).

Deer antler velvet (DAV); obtained from the male deer, is commonly used in traditional Asian medicine, has been valued for centuries for its various health benefits. DAV extract contains bioactive compounds, including growth hormones, minerals, and amino acids. This data reveals the presence of small molecules detected in the DAV extracts obtained from the antler of the local male Malayan deer (Cervus timorensis). Three types of extracts were prepared; water (WE), 70 % ethanol (70 % EE) and absolute ethanolic extracts (AEE). All extracts were analyzed using the Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mas

Morphological and morphometric study of the scapulae of Korean wild deer.

Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus; Heude, 1884) and Siberian roe deer (Capreolus pygargus; Pallas, 1771) are Korean wild deer classified in the tribe Capreolini. C. pygargus in Korea were previously considered a single species; however, it was recently suggested that roe deer living on Jeju Island (Jeju roe deer; Capreolus pygargus jejuensis) is a distinct subspecies from roe deer living on the Korean peninsula (mainland roe deer; Capreolus pygargus tianschanicus) based on several studies demonstrating genetic and morphological features. In this study, we suggests that the scapul

Seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in wild sika deer in Japan.

Toxoplasmosis is a food-borne infection that is widespread around the world, causing congenital disorders and opportunistic infections. Ingestion of undercooked meat is one of the risk factors for infection with the causative agent, Toxoplasma gondii. Japanese people occasionally eat rare meat as a traditional cuisine style called "Sashimi". A rapid increase in venison consumption in Japan has occurred mainly due to enhanced population control of wild Japanese deer (Cervus nippon) in recent decades. In particular, Yezo-sika deer (C. n. yesoensis) in Hokkaido (the northernmost and largest prefe

Borrelia burgdorferi serosurvey in wild deer in England and Wales.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United Kingdom and its incidence has been increasing in recent years. However, limited information is available on its epidemiology and dynamics in the U.K. A survey in wild deer to investigate the presence of antibodies reactive to Borrellia burgdorferi was conducted to obtain initial information on the distribution pattern of the spirochete in England and Wales. Samples from roe deer (n=604) and red deer (n=80) were collected in eight different locations. An ELISA protocol was developed to identify antibodies reactive to B. burgdorf

Seasonal variations in the epididymis of the roe deer (Capreolus capreolus).

The roe deer shows a distinct seasonal breeding pattern accompanied with significant changes in testicular structure and function during the annual cycle. It serves as a uniquely well-characterized ruminant model system to investigate the regulation of testicular activity. However, data regarding the seasonal variations taking place in the epididymis of the roe buck are not available. Therefore, this study provides a detailed morphological description of the roe buck's epididymis (cell types and segments) and a qualitative as well as quantitative characterization of the seasonal changes in the

Branching pattern of aortic arch in the Korean water deer.

This study examined the branching pattern of the aortic arch and its major branches in Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus, Heude, 1884). Silicone casts were taken from the vessels of 23 carcasses (male 14, female 9) with body weights ranging from 1.3-16.0 kg through a retrograde injection into the abdominal aorta. The findings were compared with those from other domestic ruminants. Only the brachiocephalic trunk (Bct) branched from the aortic arch in all carcasses. In 19 of the 23 cases, the Bct branched into the left subclavian artery (LSb), the left common carotid artery (LCc),

Deer density and the abundance of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae).

The abundance of Ixodes scapularis Say (Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman & Corwin), the vector tick of the Lyme disease spirochete and other human pathogens, is related to the presence of its primary reproductive stage host, white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus Zimmerman). However, this relationship has not been quantified in terms that would guide wildlife management in areas in which the public is, or is likely to become, exposed to infected ticks. In this study, deer density and tick abundance were measured in an emergent area for Lyme disease at three spatial scales using es

Acute sarcocystosis in a captive white-tailed deer in Virginia.

A 19-mo-old female captive white-tailed deer in a public wild animal park in Richmond (Virginia, USA) was necropsied and evaluated histologically following spontaneous death after a 1 wk period of lethargy in a captive herd of 22 deer. An acute necrotizing pneumonia was associated with intraendothelial protozoal schizonts that were identified immunohistochemically as Sarcocystis spp. This is the first confirmed report of acute sarcocystosis in a wild ruminant.

Hypodermosis in the red deer Cervus elaphus in Córdoba, Spain.

The prevalence of red deer hypodermosis and the life cycle of Hypodermia diana Brauer 1858 in three provinces of the south of Spain, Córdoba, Jaen and Ciudad Real, were studied by inspecting 254, thirty-eight and thirty-five deer from each province respectively. The prevalence of infestations was: Córdoba, 87.75%; Jaen, 92.10%, Ciudad Real, 91.42%. From this we deduced an overall prevalence of 88.67%, comprising 88.23% in male deer and 89.96% in female deer. The intensity of the parasitism in 213 of the 245 animals from Córdoba varied between one warble per animal to more than 100 in 28 of the

Cage design for the confinement of deer and goats infested with ectoparasites.

The design for a cage for the confinement of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and goats (Capra sp.) for use in ectoparasite studies is presented. The cage was successfully used for the infestation of these hosts with Boophilus annulatus and may be useful for host/parasite studies using similar hosts and other ectoparasites. The cage will accommodate mature hosts with adequate space for normal grooming activity. A detailed description of materials and methods for the assembly of the cage is provided in the text.

Effects of opiate antagonists on feeding and spontaneous locomotion in deer.

The effects of opioid antagonists on seasonal changes in feeding behavior of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) during fall, winter, and summer, as well as in bottle-fed fawns are described. Naltrexone had no effect on the amount of milk ingested by bottle-fed fawns. After weaning naltrexone significantly decreased feeding in both the summer and winter, with no difference in the effect for either season, indicating that opioids do not play a role in the winter hypophagia or the summer hyperphagia in deer. Similarly there was no seasonal effect on the ability of naloxone to decrease fee

Histopathological findings in the lungs of Scottish red and roe deer.

Histopathology on portions of lung collected from 34 red deer (Cervus elaphus) and 15 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) between 1977 and 1981 revealed evidence of lungworm infestation in 16 red and 14 roe deer. In the red deer, Dictyocaulus species, and the developmental stages of another parasite, believed to be Elaphostrongylus cervi, were involved. Dictyocaulus also affected the roe deer, but in them the major lesions were associated with protostrongylids. Exudative bronchopneumonia, including two cases of fungal infection, was predominantly a problem of red deer under seven months of age. Bet

Antlers on does: An unexpected role of macrophages in deer biology.

Antlers, a male deer secondary sex characteristic, are unique mammalian appendages that fully regenerate annually, under androgen regulation. Stem cells located in the antlerogenic periosteum (AP), a tissue overlaying the frontal crest of both male and female deer, play a crucial role in antlerogenesis. Nonetheless, the underlying molecular mechanisms as to how antlerogenesis is regulated by androgens remain largely unexplored. Here, we show that androgens regulate antler growth via macrophages. Bulk RNA sequencing revealed a significant enrichment of immune-related factors in the androgen-act

Sheep scrapie and deer rabies in England prior to 1800.

Eighteenth-century England witnessed the emergence of two neurological diseases in animals. Scrapie, a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, is a fatal neurodegenerative disease of sheep and goats that appears in classical and atypical forms. Reports of classical scrapie in continental Europe with described symptoms date back to 1750 in what is now western Poland. However, two major outbreaks of scrapie appeared in England prior to the 1800s. References to a sheep disease with a resemblance to scrapie first appear in Southwestern England between 1693 and 1722 and in the East Midlands betwee

Effects of ticks on community assemblages of ectoparasites in deer mice.

Ectoparasites are fundamental to ecosystems, playing a key role in trophic regulation. Fleas, mites, and ticks are common hematophagous ectoparasites that infest shared mammalian hosts. One common host in Ontario, Canada, is the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus). As the climate warms and the geographic ranges of blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) and American dog ticks (Dermacentor variabilis) expand, their introduction to new ecosystems may alter current ectoparasite communities. At three different sites where exposure to ticks varied (both in terms of tick diversity and abundance), ecto

Impact of white-tailed deer on the spread of Borrelia burgdorferi.

There is a public perception that the white-tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus (Artiodactyla: Cervidae) is the main reservoir supporting the maintenance and spread of the causative agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. This study examines the pathogen prevalence rate of Borrelia in adult Ixodes scapularis (Ixodida: Ixodidae), the black-legged tick, collected from white-tailed deer and compares it with pathogen prevalence rates in adult ticks gathered by dragging vegetation in two contiguous counties west of the Hudson Valley in upstate New York. In both Broome and Chenango Counties, att
