INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) is a late-onset, progressive muscle disease. Quantitative muscle ultrasound (QMUS) assesses structural changes in muscles and is a sensitive biomarker in neuromuscular disorders. Our aim of this study was to determine whether QMUS can detect muscle pathology and can be used as longitudinal imaging biomarker in OPMD.
METHODS: Genetically confirmed OPMD patients, recruited by their treating physicians or from the national neuromuscular database, were examined twice, 20 months apart, using QMUS of orofacial and limb muscles, and measur

Coactivation of the rotator cuff is vital to glenohumeral joint stability by centralising the humeral head within the glenoid fossa. Yet in individuals with subacromial impingement, it is hypothesised that rotator cuff coactivation abnormalities are present that could contribute to their shoulder pain. The purpose of this study was to determine if abnormal rotator cuff coactivation and deltoid activation patterns exist in participants with subacromial impingement. Rotator cuff (supraspinatus, infraspinatus, and subscapularis) coactivation and middle deltoid activation was assessed during an el

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY To investigate the pressure levels on the axillary nerve at different plate positions after plate fixation of a proximal humerus fracture. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eight fresh-frozen cadaveric specimens were used. The plates were applied on the lateral side of the humerus. A FlexiForce pressure sensor was placed between the nerve and the plate, and the pressure on the nerve was measured (Group 1). The plates were then placed in two different positions such that distal portion of the plates would have 30° anterior and 30° posterior angles to the anatomical axis of the humerus (

The overwhelming majority of glenohumeral dislocations are anterior dislocations that either spontaneously reduce or are reduced at the point of care without significant complications. Posterior dislocations are uncommon, and superior and inferior dislocations are even rarer. We present a case of "superolateral" shoulder dislocation in which the entire rotator cuff was torn either off its insertion or at the musculotendinous junction in combination with a large longitudinal split tear of the deltoid muscle. This allowed the humeral head to dislocate both superiorly and laterally into a subcuta

An inability to perform tasks involving reaching is a common problem for stroke patients. Knowledge of normal muscle activation patterns during these tasks is essential to the identification of abnormal patterns in post-stroke hemiplegia. Findings will provide insight into changes in muscle activation patterns associated with recovery of upper limb function. In this study with neurologically intact participants the co-ordination of shoulder and elbow muscle activity during two dimensional reaching tasks is explored. Eight participants undertook nine tracking tasks in which trajectory (orientat

During the assembly of the musculoskeletal system, bone ridges provide a stable anchoring point and stress dissipation for the attachment of muscles via tendons to the skeleton. In this study, we investigate the development of the deltoid tuberosity as a model for bone ridge formation. We show that the deltoid tuberosity develops through endochondral ossification in a two-phase process: initiation is regulated by a signal from the tendons, whereas the subsequent growth phase is muscle dependent. We then show that the transcription factor scleraxis (SCX) regulates Bmp4 in tendon cells at their

BACKGROUND: Dairy production in the U.S. is moving towards large-herd milking operations resulting in an increase in task specialization and work demands. Large-herd dairy parlor workers experience a high prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in the upper extremity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of an alternative teat scrubber (TS) cow preparation method on upper extremity muscle activity among large-herd parlor workers, as well compare to muscle activity associated with conventional manual milking tasks.
METHODS: Upper extremity muscle activity was recorded among U.S.

BACKGROUND: Segmental rolling has been utilized as an assessment and intervention tool to identify and affect dysfunction of the upper quarter, core, and lower quarter. One theory to explain dysfunctional segmental rolling is a lack of segmental spinal control / stabilization. Faulty muscle firing sequencing has been related to poor spinal stability, however to date, no assessment tool exists to evaluate a patient's motor coordination of local and global musculature.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess the temporal sequence of lumbar multifidus activation associated with anterior

INTRODUCTION: We sought to identify predictors of failed triceps motor branch transfer to the anterior division of the axillary nerve (AN) for shoulder abduction reconstruction after a brachial plexus injury (BPI).
METHODS: A case-control study of adult AN or brachial plexus patients treated with a triceps motor branch transfer to the anterior division of the AN with a minimum 18 months of follow-up was performed. The failure group (case group) was defined as modified British Medical Research Council muscle scale (mBMRC) postoperative deltoid grade ≤2 and was compared to the successful outcom

OBJECTIVES: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders in the neck and shoulder regions are common among carpet weavers. Working for prolonged hours in a static and awkward posture could result in an increased muscle activity and may lead to musculoskeletal disorders. Ergonomic workstation improvements can reduce muscle fatigue and the risk of musculoskeletal disorders.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The aim of this study is to assess and to compare upper trapezius and middle deltoid muscle activity in 2 traditional and improved design carpet weaving workstations. These 2 workstations were simulated in a

Stretch injuries of the infraclavicular brachial plexus have a much better prognosis for spontaneous recovery than do their supraclavicular counterparts. We present three patients with stretch injuries of the infraclavicular brachial plexus who had spontaneous restoration of function in all muscles except the deltoid. Decreased shoulder abduction was a serious handicap to these individuals. At surgical exploration, each patient had an isolated, complete axillary nerve disruption at the quadrilateral space. Deltoid muscle function was restored in all three patients by repair of the axillary ner

The motor recovery procedure of chronic stroke during robot-assisted training has not been well studied previously. In this work, we analyzed the variations in the coactivating patterns of elbow and shoulder muscles (biceps, triceps lateral, anterior deltoid, and posterior deltoid) in hemiplegic persons with chronic stroke (n=4) during a 20-session's interactive robot-assisted treatment. Significant decreases in muscle cocontractions (P<0.05) for all muscle pairs started from the 8th session of the training. Improvements were also observed in motor scores of Fugl-Meyer and modified Ashworth sc

OBJECT: Deltoid muscle weakness due to C-5 nerve root injury following cervical spine surgery is an uncommon but potentially debilitating complication. Symptoms can manifest upon emergence from anesthesia or days to weeks following surgery. There is conflicting evidence regarding the efficacy of spontaneous electromyography (spEMG) monitoring in detecting evolving C-5 nerve root compromise. By contrast, transcranial electrical stimulation-induced motor evoked potential (tceMEP) monitoring has been shown to be highly sensitive and specific in identifying impending C-5 injury. In this study the

Manual material handling is associated with shoulder musculoskeletal disorders, especially for women. Sex differences in glenohumeral muscle activity may contribute to women's higher injury risk by affecting shoulder load and stability. We assessed the effects of sex (25 women vs 26 men) and lifting load (6 kg vs 12 kg) on muscle activation during box lifting from hip to eye level. Surface and intramuscular electromyography were recorded from 10 glenohumeral muscles. Most muscles were more activated for the heavier box and for women. These effects were larger for 'prime movers' than for stabil
