An unusual healing of a replanted permanent lateral incisor.

BACKGROUND: Continued development and healing of an immature permanent tooth root was reported to have occurred. The continued viability of Hertwig's root sheath was thought to be necessary and responsible. Continued development of a tooth root separate from the body of the tooth was reported, but the initiation and development associated with a replanted tooth was not observed. METHODS: A 9-year-old boy sustained an avulsion injury to his upper right lateral incisor. The tooth was replanted within 5-10 minutes of the incident and was splinted approximately 30 minutes after the injury, and th

Outcome of formocresol/ZOE sub-base pulpotomies utilizing alternative radiographic success criteria.

PURPOSE: The purposes of this investigation were to 1) measure success of a primary tooth pulpotomy technique that applies formocresol in the sub-base without the common five-minute application of a formocresol impregnated cotton pellet; and 2) compare success rates of the pulpotomy procedure using traditional criteria found throughout the literature with new criteria recently established, excluding internal resorption as a radiographic failure. METHODS: Clinical and radiographic data were collected from a retrospective chart review of patients receiving formocresol pulpotomies with the appli

Permanent teeth with horizontal root fractures after dental trauma. A retrospective study.

The purpose of the present retrospective study was to evaluate the post-traumatic healing of the pulp and periodontium of 32 permanent teeth with horizontal root fractures. Twenty-nine patients, 8-48 years old, who presented at our department with a root fracture between January 2001 and April 2007, participated in the study. Root-fractured teeth with a loosened or dislocated coronal fragment were repositioned and splinted for 14-49 days (average: 34 days). In cases of severe dislocation of the coronal fragment, prophylactic endodontic treatment was performed. Follow-up examinations were condu

Bone sialoprotein-induced reparative dentinogenesis in the pulp of rat's molar.

Bone sialoprotein (BSP), an osteogenic protein (OP), mixed with a carrier, was implanted in the pulp of rat first upper molars (OP group). Cavities were prepared with dental burs and pulp perforation was carried out by pressure with the tip of a steel probe. After 8, 14, and 30 days, the rats were killed and the pulps of the OP group were compared with (1) a sham group (S group), (2) a group where the carrier was implanted alone (C group), and (3) capping with calcium hydroxide (Ca group). After 8 days, a few inflammatory cells were seen, mostly located at the pulp surface near the perforation

In vitro characterization of enamel epithelium and pulp cells in mouse tooth germs.

Mixed cell populations consisting of enamel epithelium and pulp cells obtained from 18-day embryonic mouse tooth germs were cultured in vitro. Epithelial cells and pulp cells were also cultured individually and examined. Isolated cells were cultured in alpha-MEM supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum for up to four weeks and examined morphologically using histological procedures including immunostaining, light and electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis. The pulp cells proliferated and differentiated in the absence of epithelium, but the number of epithelial cells showed a stro

Enamel dysplasia with hamartomatous atypical follicular hyperplasia (EDHFH) syndrome: suggested pathogenic mechanisms.

The syndrome of enamel dysplasia with hamartomatous atypical follicular hyperplasia (EDHFH) is an unusual syndrome and is unique to black South Africans. Major criteria for the syndrome are enamel dysplasia with generalized amelogenesis imperfecta-like features and atypical hyperplastic dental follicles with microscopic features of central odontogenic fibroma WHO-type (follicle analogue) attached to the crowns of multiple impacted teeth. Minor features of some cases are anterior open-bite malocclusion, supernumerary teeth, pulpal calcification, aberrant roots with hypercementosis, and hypodont

Enamel-renal-gingival syndrome and FAM20A mutations.

The enamel-renal syndrome of amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) and nephrocalcinosis, and the amelogenesis imperfecta-gingival fibromatosis syndrome have both been associated with mutations in FAM20A. We report on two unrelated Thai patients with three novel and one previously reported mutations in FAM20A with findings suggesting both disorders, including hypoplastic AI, gingival fibromatosis, unerupted teeth, aggressive periodontitis, and nephrocalcinosis/nephrolithiasis. Additional findings consisted of a supernumerary premolar, localized aggressive periodontitis, thin alveolar bone, vitamin D def

Two-stepped pH-responsive peptide microsphere/carboxymethyl chitosan complex: enhanced protection of an inflamed dentin-pulp complex.

Dental caries is the most prevalent infectious disease affecting oral health, leading to the destruction of tooth hard tissues and dental pulp inflammation. The dentin-pulp complex, as the biological core of the tooth, can generate reparative dentin to protect the dental pulp from infection progression. However, untreated carious lesions chronically disrupt the structural integrity and reparative capacity of the dentin-pulp complex, thereby significantly compromising pulp vitality as deep caries progresses. In this study, a two-stepped pH-responsive peptide microsphere/carboxymethyl chitosan c

Reparative bone-like tissue formation in the tooth of a systemic sclerosis patient.

AIM: To report a case of reparative bone-like tissue formation in the tooth of a patient with systemic sclerosis. SUMMARY: A 58-year-old Japanese female patient with systemic sclerosis was referred because of tooth fracture. Cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) revealed multiple root resorption and the unclear transition from alveolar bone to root profile. A sample from a fractured tooth was analysed histologically. Haematoxylin and eosin-stained sections revealed the irregular replacement of pulp and dentine by bone-like tissue. Calcinosis was noted in various parts of the body and a his

Dental findings in a child with osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OS-CS): a case report.

The dental management of an 8-year-old girl with osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OS-CS) is described. The girl presented with various oral abnormalities. The aim of this case report was to describe in detail the dental findings in a patient with OC-CS and the precautions to be taken when planning treatment. In the present case, many dental anomalies, such as delayed eruption of the permanent teeth, obliteration of the dental pulp, short roots, fused roots and taurodontism, were detected. In patients with OS-CS, routine dental care from an early stage is recommended to manage this a

Osteopontin regulates dentin and alveolar bone development and mineralization.

The periodontal complex is essential for tooth attachment and function and includes the mineralized tissues, cementum and alveolar bone, separated by the unmineralized periodontal ligament (PDL). To gain insights into factors regulating cementum-PDL and bone-PDL borders and protecting against ectopic calcification within the PDL, we employed a proteomic approach to analyze PDL tissue from progressive ankylosis knock-out (Ank-/-) mice, featuring reduced PPi, rapid cementogenesis, and excessive acellular cementum. Using this approach, we identified the matrix protein osteopontin (Spp1/OPN) as an

Oral Surgery in Patients With Sturge-Weber Syndrome.

The Sturge-Weber syndrome (SSW) is a congenital neurocutaneous malformation, with angiomas involving the leptomeningea and facial skin. This syndrome is characterized by corticocerebral angiomatosis, cerebral calcifications, ocular affections, mental retardation, increased risk of stroke, counterlateral hemiplegia, and seizures. Another important feature of SSW is the flameus nevus on the face. In the oral cavity, SSW appears as hemangiomatous lesions affecting the mucous membranes and occasionally the dental pulp. Gingival hyperplasia may be present due to the use of anticonvulsant drugs. The

Dentinal dysplasia type I: review of the literature and report of a family.

A family is reported with dentinal dysplasia type I affecting both dentitions. Presenting features included unusual mobility of the teeth, followed by early exfoliation; normal clinical shape of the crowns of the teeth, but with an amber color without any sign of attrition or abnormal loss of enamel. Radiographic findings showed pulp-chamber and root-canal obliteration, poor root formation, radiolucent linear appearance of the pulp chamber parallel to the cementoenamel junction and frequent periapical radiolucencies. Histological studies have reported large masses of calcified tubular dentin,
