Lorazepam as a premedicant in dental surgery.

In a double-blind study, 100 young, healthy (American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status 1) patients received lorazepam (Ativan; Wyeth) 2,5 mg or placebo orally as premedication before general anaesthesia for extraction of wisdom teeth. Lorazepam produced a significant reduction in the incidence of pre-operative anxiety and post-anaesthetic headache compared with placebo (P less than 0,01). Anterograde amnesia was also more frequent in the patients who had received lorazepam (P less than 0.001). The medicolegal implications of using lorazepam as a premedicant in dental surgery at a d

Indoor air quality in a dentistry clinic.

The purpose of this work is to assess, both experimentally and theoretically the status of air quality in a dentistry clinic of the Athens University Dentistry Faculty with respect to chemical pollutants and identify the indoor sources associated with dental activities. Total VOCs, CO(2), PM(10), PM(2.5), NO(x) and SO(2) were measured over a period of approximately three months in a selected dentistry clinic. High pollution levels during the operation hours regarding CO(2), total VOCs and Particulate Matter were found, while in the non-working periods lower levels were recorded. On the contrar

Endodontic Management of a Mandibular Second Premolar with Three Root Canals and Taurodontism: A Case Report.

A complete understanding of canal morphology is essential to achieve successful endodontic treatment. Although mandibular second premolars are reported to have usually only one root canal at the apex, in this case we reported a mandibular second premolar with three root canals and taurodont morphology. A patient was referred to the endodontic department at Mashhad Faculty of Dentistry with a chief complaint of pain in her mandibular right second premolar tooth. The diagnosis of pulpal necrosis and chronic apical periodontitis was established. The initial radiograph showed a taurodont premolar

Understanding the misalignment of dental artificial intelligence: An empirical study on clinicians' perceived needs versus technologically-driven development.

The expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is often framed as a response to clinical needs and system inefficiencies; however, its alignment with professional values and everyday practice remains less examined. This study examines the role of AI in dentistry through qualitative semi-structured interviews with 16 dentists in active clinical practice, conducted in Chile in 2025, focusing on how practitioners evaluate AI in relation to their professional ethos. The findings show that dentistry is understood as a moral practice centered on relational care and situated judgment. Wh

Reconstruction of a Demineralized Dentin Matrix via Rapid Deposition of CaF2 Nanoparticles In Situ Promotes Dentin Bonding.

Dentin bonding based on a wet-bonding technique is the fundamental technique used daily in clinics for tooth-restoration fixation and clinical treatment of tooth-related diseases. Limited bonding durability led by insufficient adhesive infiltration in the demineralized dentin (DD) matrix is the biggest concern in contemporary adhesive dentistry. This study proposes that the highly hydrated noncollagenous protein (NCP)-formed interfacial microenvironment of the DD matrix is the root cause of this problem. Meanwhile, the endogenous phosphate groups of the NCPs are used as pseudonuclei to rapidly

Conventional Frenectomy With Topical Ozonated Oil Application.

The frenum is a mucous membrane fold that connects the lip and cheek to the gingiva, periosteum, and alveolar mucosa. When the frena are linked too closely to the gingival border, there may be issues with plaque removal, and the overall gingiva may be affected. In addition, the maxillary frenum may provide aesthetic difficulties or interfere with the aesthetic outcome in cases of midline diastema, which may result in a recurrence after treatment. A labial frenectomy, a frequently performed surgical operation in the specialty of dentistry, is used to address such an abnormal frenum. This articl

Modern sedative agents and techniques used in dentistry for patients with special needs: A review.

According to the World Health Organisation, approximately 1.3 billion people worldwide experience substantial disability due to physical, mental or sensory impairment. People with special needs require special consideration and more time or altered delivery methods when receiving dental treatments. Various factors, such as patients' lack of cooperation, cognitive impairment and complex medical status, may lead dental practitioners to recommend conscious sedation. Several pharmacological agents and administrative routes are available, which achieve varying levels of sedation ranging from minima

Iatrogenic damage to the mandibular nerves as assessed by the masseter inhibitory reflex.

Iatrogenic injury of the inferior alveolar or lingual nerves frequently leads to legal actions for damage and compensation for personal suffering. The masseter inhibitory reflex (MIR) is the most used neurophysiological tool for the functional assessment of the trigeminal mandibular division. Aiming at measuring the MIR sensitivity and specificity, we recorded this reflex after mental and tongue stimulations in a controlled, blinded study in 160 consecutive patients with sensory disturbances following dental procedures. The MIR latency was longer on the affected than the contralateral side (P
