Pemphigus vulgaris and laser therapy: crucial role of dentists.

INTRODUCTION: Pemphigus vulgaris is a relatively rare, chronic, autoimmune vesiculobullous disorder characterized by formation of intraepithelial vesiculae and/or bullae in the skin and mucous membrane. Systemic steroids are considered to be the standard first-line therapy for pemphigus vulgaris. However, for patients unresponsive to standard therapy, the new treatment modalities are being sought. Low-level laser therapy has been accepted as an alternative or adjunctive treatment modality for many conditions in medicine and dentistry. Therefore, this study was aimed at presenting the effects o

Brazilian dentists' attitudes about medical emergencies during dental treatment.

The main objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of emergencies in dental practices and the prepared-ness and the training experience in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of Brazilian dentists in dealing with emergencies. The volunteer participants in the study were 498 Brazilian dentists who were present at the 27th International Congress of Dentistry in São Paulo. The most prevalent emergency was presyncope (reported by 54.20 percent of respondents), followed by orthostatic hypotension (44.37 percent), moderate allergic reactions (16.86 percent), hypertensive crisis (15.06 p

Cardiovascular responses in patients and dentists during dental treatment.

Changes in mean heart rate and in mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure are induced by both the patient's anticipation of scheduled treatment and the actual dental treatment. Most of these changes are within the normal physiological variations, but significant changes are observed before administration of a local anaesthetic, during subgingival debridement and during extractions. Individual changes in heart rate and blood pressure are affected by age, gender, hypertension and previous dental experience. Pain also plays an important role in the cardiovascular response during dental treatme

Tobacco-related attitudes and counseling practices of Iowa dentists.

Evidence suggests that dentists' efforts to encourage their patients to stop tobacco use can significantly decrease tobacco-related morbidity and mortality. This study identified attitudes and counseling practices of 1116 Iowa dentists and compared results of a subgroup (N = 55) surveyed in both 1983 and 1989 to note changes in their tobacco-related attitudes and practices. Although only 9% of the dentists from the statewide survey felt counseling their patients on tobacco use was inappropriate, 56% reported they did not routinely ask their new patients about tobacco use. With some frequency 9

Qualifying Dental Programs for Internationally Trained Dentists: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Many dental schools offer qualifying dental programs to internationally trained dentists (ITDs) to help them meet the standards of dental care expected in the host country. The literature on this topic has not yet been comprehensively summarized. This scoping review aimed to summarize the available literature on ITDs enrolled in qualifying dental programs. Methods This study was guided by a previously established framework for scoping reviews (Arksey and O'Malley's framework). No restrictions were set on the time period or study design of included studies. Five databases (PubMed, W

More Physicians and Dentists Should Participate in Clinical Trials Now!

Clinical trials offer physicians and dentists meaningful opportunities to expand patient care, strengthen professional relevance, and contribute directly to scientific progress. Many patients, particularly those with chronic, progressive, rare, or treatment‑resistant conditions, exhaust standard therapies and may benefit from investigational options available only through research. By participating in clinical trials, clinicians might provide access to emerging therapies, diagnostics, devices, and care strategies while allowing patients to remain within their trusted community practices. Unveiling dental diagnostic dilemmas: a national survey of US dentists.

BACKGROUND: In dentistry, very little is known about diagnostic errors (DEs) despite their critical role in assessing patient safety. Many DE cases significantly impact the patient’s quality of life and daily function without necessarily causing medical harm. The primary goal of this study was to describe dentists past experiences or observations of DEs and their associated characteristics. METHODS: We conducted a national cross-sectional study of US dentists (May-June, 2021). The primary outcomes were self-reported personal experiences of DEs and observations of DEs made by other dentists. Se

Diagnosing and recording root caries: A survey among Swiss dentists.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the increase in the root caries prevalence, little is still known about how dentists manage this condition. The present study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of dentists on diagnosing and recording root caries lesions (RCL). METHODS: The survey consisted of three domains: (1) dentists' knowledge on diagnosing, recording and managing RCL; (2) information about their current general clinical routines; and (3) their demographics. The four Swiss Universities distributed the survey via e-mail lists for alumni or professionals participating in continuing education. The data was

A survey on systemic antibiotic prescription among dentists in Romandy.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a significant global health threat that arises from the excessive and incorrect use of antibiotics. As key players in the evolution of AMR, medical and dental practitioners are often questioned on their indications for antibiotic prescription during daily practice. The present survey aimed to evaluate self-reported practices regarding systemic antibiotic prescription among Swiss dentists in Romandy. An electronic questionnaire was sent to 331 dentists working in the French-speaking part of Switzerland and the responses were analyzed on a three-point Likert sca

Advice for Dentists from Temporomandibular Disorder Patients: A Phenomenological Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite increased efforts to improve the health of those with temporomandibular disorder (TMD), the focus remains on medical knowledge rather than patients' opinions and needs regarding quality of treatment and pain management. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify what TMD patients want their dentists to know and do. METHODS: Open-ended questions were used to understand the perspectives of 6 TMD patients. Two researchers examined the transcripts using interpretive phenomenological analysis. FINDINGS: TMD participants consistently stressed the need for their dentists to listen and pr

Brazilian dentists' perceptions of using bone grafts: an inland survey.

Pre-clinical assessments of bone substitute materials are frequent in the literature, but research papers about the clinical situation of bone graft use and consumer market acceptance are rare. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dental use of bone grafts according to the perception of dentists in the city of Sobral, Brazil. We interviewed 183 professionals and analyzed their professional data, knowledge of the subject, specific use, and opinions on cost-effectiveness and biosafety. Most of the respondents had 10 years' or less experience in the profession, and lacked specialization thou

Assessment of Australian Dentists' Treatment Planning Decisions Based on Diagnosis.

INTRODUCTION: An accurate diagnosis is required for the appropriate management of endodontic conditions. It is unknown whether the specific descriptive terminology used in diagnosis influences treatment decision making. The aim of this study was to determine whether treatment choices made by dentists are influenced by the diagnostic terminology used. METHODS: One hundred ninety-four dentists in Australia were recruited through the Australian Dental Association to complete an online survey regarding 14 endodontic cases. Respondents selected treatment options based on a given diagnosis and radi
