Experimental Manipulation of the BFI-2, IPIP-NEO-120, and the IPC-5.

Research assessing the relationship of the five-factor model (FFM) to personality disorder symptomatology has generally been confirmatory, with three exceptions. The exceptions have been failures to confirm associations of conscientiousness with the obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, agreeableness with dependent, and openness with schizotypal. Haigler and Widiger demonstrated empirically years ago that this was occurring because the predominant FFM measure at that time, the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised, does not include a sufficient representation of maladaptive variants of the re

Personality traits in adults with hoarding disorder.

BACKGROUND: Prior research has demonstrated a link between compulsive hoarding symptoms and personality traits; however, no studies have investigated the link between hoarding and personality traits utilizing a sample of individuals diagnosed with hoarding disorder (HD) using formal diagnostic criteria. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the frequency and type of personality traits in adults diagnosed with HD and to explore the associations among hoarding severity and personality disorder traits within this sample. METHODS: Seventy-two veterans enrolled in an ongoing treatment trial

Longitudinal studies of personality disorders: four lessons from personality psychology.

The three longitudinal projects described in this special section of the Journal of Personality Disorders raise a number of intriguing questions concerning the natural history of personality disorders and offer more than their share of surprises. In addition, they underscore several valuable lessons derived from the literature on normal-range personality traits. Drawing in part from the writings of the American trait psychologist Gordon Allport, I describe four such lessons: (1) change and continuity of personality traits and disorders can and do coexist, (2) the covariation among personality

The stability of DSM personality disorders over twelve to eighteen years.

BACKGROUND: Stability of personality disorders is assumed in most nomenclatures; however, the evidence for this is limited and inconsistent. The aim of this study is to investigate the stability of DSM-III personality disorders in a community sample of eastern Baltimore residents unselected for treatment. METHODS: Two hundred ninety four participants were examined on two occasions by psychiatrists using the same standardized examination twelve to eighteen years apart. All the DSM-III criteria for personality disorders were assessed. Item-response analysis was adapted into two approaches to as

The concept of dependence.

The concept of dependence is reviewed in Western and Asian contexts. Asians find it acceptable and necessary, whereas Westerners may adopt an ambivalent attitude or reject the issue. Homeostatic dependence or reliance upon social and physicochemical environment is vital for human development and adaptation. Dependence as a phenomenon can be an interactional state, a trait, a role, and an initiator of mental mechanisms. Imbalanced processes result in pathological dependencies or disorders. An understanding of aspects of dependence has therapeutic implications in the assessment of the patient an

Personality disorder functioning styles and empathy in trainee nurses: the mediating and moderating roles of death attitudes.

BACKGROUND: There is abundant evidence that an individual's personality traits may influence their level of empathy. However, the role of death attitudes in the relationship between personality disorder functioning styles of nurses and their empathy remains to be elucidated. METHODS: Personality disorder functioning styles, death attitudes, and empathy levels were assessed in 614 Chinese trainee nurses using the Parker Personality Measure (PERM), the Death Attitude Scale-Revised (DAP-R), and the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Health Professionals (JSE-HP). RESULTS: Among the trainee nurses, DAP-

[Psychiatric aspects of Crohn's disease (author's transl)].

We have examined 13 patients suffering from Crohn's disease, almost all of them during an active spell. Three patients had a well-structured personality, four patients an obsessional one, one patient a narcissistic personality, and five patients a passive-dependant personality structure. Four patients seemed depressed and anxious. The texts dealing with the psychological aspects of Crohn's disease acknowledge the influence of a stress as a precipitating factor. Patients' passivity and dependence is an idea emphasized by several authors, and the frequency of obsessive personality traits is poin

Substance abuse and personality disorders in homeless drop-in center clients: symptom severity and psychotherapy retention in a randomized clinical trial.

This study evaluated the psychiatric symptoms, psychosocial problems, and treatment response of personality-disordered substance abusers receiving services within a homeless drop-in center. Fifty-two homeless clients were assessed after program admission and randomly assigned to receive either individual psychotherapy focused on personality disorder and substance abuse relapse prevention (dual-focus schema therapy [DFST]) or standard group substance abuse counseling (SAC). Client functioning was assessed using measures of personality disorder, psychiatric symptoms, early maladaptive schemas, i

The dependent personality and interpersonal problems.

At the core of the dependent personality disorder lies an excessive reliance on other people for support, direction, and nurturance. However, because of their interpersonal style, many patients high in dependency have difficulties establishing and maintaining close interpersonal relationships. The present study examined interpersonal problems related to the dependent personality disorder. The relationships between dependency and interpersonal problems were examined in 43 adult psychiatric inpatients and 66 nonpatient adults. All subjects were assessed for social functioning in terms of social

Risk and Protective Factors for Personality Disorders: An Umbrella Review of Published Meta-Analyses of Case-Control and Cohort Studies.

The putative risk/protective factors for several personality disorders remain unclear. The vast majority of published studies has assessed personality characteristics/traits rather than disorders. Thus, the current umbrella review of meta-analyses (MAs) aims to systematically assess risk or protective factors associated with personality disorders. We searched PubMed-MEDLINE/PsycInfo databases, up to August 31, 2020. Quality of MAs was assessed with AMSTAR-2, while the credibility of evidence for each association was assessed through standard quantitative criteria. Out of 571 initial references

Relationship between personality disorder dimensions and verbal memory functioning in a community population.

Based on the Baltimore Epidemiologic Catchment Area (ECA) follow-up survey, we examined relationships between dimensions of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV) personality disorders and both subjective and objective memory functioning in a community population. Our study subjects consisted of 736 individuals from the ECA follow-up study of the original Baltimore ECA cohort, conducted between 1993 and 1996 and available for assessment in the Hopkins Epidemiology Study of Personality Disorders from 1997 to 1999. Subjects were assessed for DSM-IV personality disorders u

Personality disturbances in drug-dependent women: relationship to childhood abuse.

This study examined associations between childhood abuse and personality disturbances in 228 drug-dependent women. Thirty-six percent denied abuse, 50% reported emotional, 42% physical, and 42% sexual abuse. Million Clinical Multiarial Inventory (MCMI-III) scores > 74 provided evidence of personality disturbance and scores on Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) scales measuring somatic complaints, depression, anxiety and postraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) served as covariates. Emotional and physical abuse survivors were at increased risk for borderline, masochistic, and avo

Patients with chronic headache tend to have more psychological symptoms than those with sporadic episodes of pain.

UNLABELLED: There are controversial associations between headaches and psychological symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To design a profile of neuroticism, a term that groups variables related to negative personality traits, in patients with chronic daily headache (CDH) when compared to episodic migraine (EM) patients, applying the Factorial Scale of Emotional Adjustment/Neuroticism (NFS). METHOD: One hundred adult patients with CDH and forty with EM answered the NFS. RESULTS: Comorbidities of subtypes of neuroticism (p=0.006) were more common in chronic daily headache patients, with three or more disord

Modified crisis intervention for personality disorder.

This study proposes that the goal of crisis intervention for persons with personality disorders should be to return them to their pre-crisis level of functioning, even though this is maladaptive. This is contrasted with standard crisis intervention, which aims to return normal or neurotic persons to their pre-crisis normal or neurotic functioning, usually by means of few and short-term therapeutic encounters. The modification proposed costs more time and resources in persons with personality disorders in crisis and fits the intervention to the personality type. This is illustrated by the case

Psychoanalytic patients in the U.S., Canada, and Australia: II. A DSM-III-R validation study.

A study was conducted to validate our previous work on the DSM-III-R disorders diagnosed in patients in psychoanalysis in the U.S., Canada, and Australia and to determine which specific mood, anxiety, and personality disorders were the most common in these patients. The earlier study consisted of three surveys of psychoanalytic practice that together obtained data on 1,718 patients, through extensive mail surveys to analysts in the three countries. In the validation study, 206 patients were diagnosed using a different technique. Analysts similar in important respects to those who participated
