Health education and postpartum depression: exploring associations in clinical data.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a common maternal mental health condition. Existing treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacological interventions, often face challenges related to cost, accessibility, and acceptability, particularly among breastfeeding mothers. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary health education (iHealth) in reducing postpartum depression and anxiety while enhancing the quality of life among primiparous women. METHODS: This retrospective study, conducted on 192 puerperal women who delivered between Januar

Stratifying Risk for Postpartum Depression at Time of Hospital Discharge.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depression (PPD) represents a major contributor to postpartum morbidity and mortality. Beyond efforts at routine screening, risk stratification models could enable more targeted interventions in settings with limited resources. Thus, we aimed to develop and estimate the performance of a generalizable risk stratification model for PPD in patients without a history of depression using information collected as part of routine clinical care. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of all individuals who delivered between 2017 and 2022 in one of two large academic

Postpartum depression and autoimmune disease: a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

PURPOSE: The rising prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) is harmful to women and families. While there is a growing body of evidence suggesting an association between PPD and autoimmune diseases (ADs), the direction of causality remains uncertain. Therefore, Mendelian randomization (MR) study was employed to investigate the potential causal relationship between the two. METHODS: This study utilized large-scale genome-wide association study genetic pooled data from two major databases: the IEU OpenGWAS project and the FinnGen databases. The causal analysis methods used inverse variance we

Postpartum depression and associated factors in Afar Region, northeast Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: To effectively address the burden of postpartum depression (PPD), it is crucial to gain a comprehensive understanding of its magnitude and the factors associated with it in the pastoral and hot region of the Afar Region. This will help identify the progress made thus far and highlight areas that require further attention to accelerate efforts toward reducing the impact of PPD. Notably, no previous study has examined the prevalence and associated factors of PPD specifically in pastoral communities within Ethiopia, including the Afar Region. Accordingly, we investigated the prevalenc

Meta-Analyses of Genome-Wide Association Studies for Postpartum Depression.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common subtype of major depressive disorder (MDD) that is more heritable, yet is understudied in psychiatric genetics. The authors conducted meta-analyses of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) to investigate the genetic architecture of PPD. METHOD: Meta-analyses were conducted on 18 cohorts of European ancestry (17,339 PPD cases and 53,426 controls), one cohort of East Asian ancestry (975 cases and 3,780 controls), and one cohort of African ancestry (456 cases and 1,255 controls), totaling 18,770 PPD cases and 58,461 controls. Post-GWAS analyse

Screening for Postpartum Depression in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common mental health condition that affects approximately 13% of postpartum women in the United States. However, the prevalence in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) has been shown to be higher. Routine screening for maternal PPD is recommended at infant primary care well-child visits up to 6 months of age. The absence of a routine PPD screening program in a level IV NICU created a large gap in screening in an at-risk population. PURPOSE: To develop and implement a screening program in the NICU to increase the identification of maternal PPD sy

[GABAergic approach of postpartum depression: A translational review of literature].

INTRODUCTION: Prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) ranges from 10 to 15 % of parturients. The impact of the PPD is major on the maternal bond and the health of both mother and child. Its physiopathological mechanisms appear to differ from other types of depression. Today, pharmacotherapy is based on nonspecific treatment, and recent therapeutic advances in this field require a comprehensive approach of the implication of the GABAergic system in the development of PPD. Neurosteroid levels during pregnancy and after parturition and the GABA-A-r modulation are thought to be involved in PPD.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common and gravely disabling health concern. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is an FDA approved treatment for major depression and may be a valuable tool in the treatment of PPD. The treatment effect of rTMS is rapid, generally well tolerated, without systemic effects, and without medication exposure to a fetus and/or breastfed infant. METHODS: Six women with PPD received 20 sessions of 10 Hz rTMS over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) over a 4 week period. Psychiatric rating scales (BDI, EPDS, STATI), cognitive as

Bipolar II disorder as a risk factor for postpartum depression.

OBJECTIVES: There is evidence for a bipolar diathesis in postpartum depression (PPD) and women presenting with a first PPD frequently receive a diagnosis of bipolar type II disorder (BD-II). However formal evidence for an association between BD-II and PPD has not yet been reported. In the present study we tested a potential association between BD-II and PPD. METHODS: Parous women with a diagnosis of bipolar type I disorder (BD-I) (n=93), BD-II (n=36) or major depressive disorder (MDD) (n=444) were considered in the present study. All women were retrospectively evaluated for history of PPD (DS

Emotional memory in pregnant women at risk for postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is associated with debilitating effects on mothers and their infants. A previous history of depression is considered the strongest risk factor for PPD. Depressed individuals recall more negative than positive content and higher levels of stress hormones released during encoding are associated with enhanced recall of emotional stimuli. This study examined the impact of a previous history of major depressive disorder (MDD) and pregnancy on emotional memory. Seventy-seven participants completed the study [44 pregnant women in the second trimester of pregnancy with and

Gender-linked stem cell alterations in stroke and postpartum depression.

Stroke is a significant unmet clinical need. The current stroke treatment of tissue plasminogen activator is limited to the very acute 4.5 h after disease onset which benefits only less than 3% of ischemic stroke patients. Our overarching hypothesis advances the notion that gender, which has been established as a comorbidity factor of stroke, plays a key role in regenerative medicine, in particular stem cell therapy. We hypothesize that gender is a key factor in culture-induced stemness of adult stem cells. Our goal is to provide new evidence supporting gender effects on stroke and stem cells

Incidence and predictors of postpartum depression among postpartum mothers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: A cross-sectional study.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is one of the mental health complications that may arise following childbirth. This cross-sectional study explores the association between socioeconomic factors and PPD literacy with PPD incidence in 350 participants (mean age: 30.58±4.72 years) at one to six months postpartum, who attended the Kuala Lumpur Health Clinic from May to October 2020. PPD incidence and literacy were assessed using the validated Malay versions of the Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Postpartum Depression Literacy Scale (PoDLiS), respectively. The participants' socioeco

Fear of childbirth, birth satisfaction, and postpartum depression in relation to mother-infant bonding in postpartum women.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed toexamine the relationships between fear of childbirth, birth satisfaction, postpartum depression, and mother-infant bonding. METHODS: The population of this cross-sectional study consisted of postpartum women who had given birth vaginally. A power analysis was conducted using G*Power (version 3.1.9.7) to determine the required sample size. The a priori power analysis, based on a multiple linear regression model (f² = 0.15, α = 0.05, power = 0.80), indicated that at least 346 participants were needed. The study was completed with 520 postpartum women who met the i

Relationship between postpartum depression and plasma vasopressin level at 6-8 weeks postpartum: a cross-sectional study.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most important postpartum mood disorder due to its significant effect on both the infant and family health. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) has been suggested as a hormonal agent involved in the development of depression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the plasma concentrations of AVP and the score of Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2016-2017 in Darehshahr Township, Ilam Province, Iran. In the first phase, 303 pregnant women, who were at 38 weeks, met the inclusion crit
