Dermatoglyphics in parents of children with trisomy 21. Evaluation of their interest in genetic counselling.

Dermal patterns in a group of Down's syndrome patients, a normal control population and a group of parents of Down's syndrome patients were studied in an attempt to identify an Index Score to be used in differentiating controls from parents of Down's syndrome children. Using only three patterns (simian crease, palmar hypothenar pattern and Cummins' Index), a parents' Index Score was established which correctly diagnosed 80.83% of controls and 79.17% of parents. The predictive value of this index and its interest in genetic counselling are discussed.

[Morphologic and dermatoglyphic aspects of Klinefelter 47,XXY syndrome (author's transl)].

The author described 20 personal cases of Klinefelter's syndrome, from among those referred to the Institute of Medical Genetics for cytogenetic confirmation of the clinical diagnosis. In the first instance, in relation to the morphological aspects, the author carried out a historic and aetiological review of the syndrome, estimated its incidence and described the clinical and endocrinological symptomatology, also the testicular histology. She then outlined the differential diagnosis and the treatment envisaged for these cases. After giving a clinical description and details of the anthropobio

Significance of the single umbilical artery. A clinical, radiological, chromosomal, and dermatoglyphic study.

A single umbilical artery is present in about 1% of all singletons. It is associated with a wide range of congenital malformations. Chromosomal analysis of our surviving cases gave normal results. Dermatoglyphic patterns were normal, except that the boys showed a three- to fourfold increase in the number of the radial loops on the fingers, and a lowering of the total finger ridge count. Evidence favouring a common non-genetic cause for both a single umbilical artery and the associated malformations is discussed.

Fluctuating asymmetry and vertebral malformation. A study of palmar dermatoglyphics in congenital spinal deformities.

STUDY DESIGN: Prints of palmar dermatoglyphics (epidermal ridges) of individuals with congenital vertebral anomaly were compared, using symmetry criteria, with those of healthy control individuals. Asymmetries have been reported in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and, from other centers, in other congenital anomalies, such as cleft lip and palate. Application of these methods to congenital vertebral anomaly seemed promising. OBJECTIVES: To challenge the hypothesis that, in congenital vertebral anomaly, epigenesis was disrupted by nonspecific physiologic stress during the embryonic period, res

Evaluation of the relationship between dermatoglyphics and mandibular third molar impaction: A cross-sectional study.

Background: Dermatoglyphics can be utilised in clinical settings to identify those who are more likely to have impacted teeth. Additionally, dermatoglyphics looks to have potential as a non-invasive diagnostic method for predicting the presence or absence of an impacted tooth. The goal of this study was to look at the most common dermatoglyphic pattern in people who had or didn't have an impacted mandibular third molar teeth and see if there was a dermatoglyphic signature. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 180 participants was conducted (90 cases and 90 controls). The rolling impression te

Dermatoglyphics and Cheiloscopy patterns in hypertensive and type 2 Diabetes mellitus patients: An observational study.

BACKGROUND: Essential hypertension is a type of hypertension which bears no etiological reasons. It is found to affect approximately 90 to 95 percent of hypertensive individuals. Similarly, type 2 diabetes or diabetes mellitus is a genetically determined systemic condition with a close relation to familial medical history. Both of these conditions or diseases are closely linked with the process of ageing among various other inherited and genetically determined factors. Importantly, a positive family history increases disease risk manifolds. As there is increased risk of hypertension and develo

Bilateral absence of maxillary and mandibular second premolars: a clinical, genetic and dermatoglyphic study.

In the report presented here the mode of inheritance pattern of absence of maxillary and mandibular second premolars will be investigated by pedigree analyses and dermatoglyphic studies of a patient who showed the trait and his family members. An 11-year-old male patient with caries with bilateral absence of maxillary and mandibular second premolars was observed. Most of the dermatoglyphic traits observed in the patient were also found in the father and the sister of the patient.

Dermatoglyphic Patterns in Patients Having Impacted and Erupted Third Molars-A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: The dermatoglyphics have been used in several researches for predicting various pathologies of oral cavity like periodontitis, dental caries, impacted teeth, mal-occlusion, developmental defects such as cleft lip and palate, and potentially malignant disorders. Impacted teeth may be associated with various pathologies such as caries, pericoronitis, dentigerous cysts, and keratocystic odontogenic tumors; therefore, predicting impacted teeth through dermatoglyphic patterns can help in diagnosis and future treatment planning of such event. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim and objective o

Prenatal maternal stress from a natural disaster predicts dermatoglyphic asymmetry in humans.

Dermatoglyphic asymmetry of fingertip ridge counts is more frequent in schizophrenia patients than normal controls, and may reflect disruptions in fetal development during Weeks 14-22 when fingerprints develop. However, there are no data in humans linking specific adverse events at specific times to dermatoglyphic asymmetries. Our objective was to determine whether prenatal exposure to a natural disaster (1998 Quebec ice storm) during Weeks 14-22 would result in increased dermatoglyphic asymmetry in children, and to determine the roles of maternal objective stress exposure, subjective stress r

Is reduced dermatoglyphic a-b ridge count a reliable marker of developmental impairment in schizophrenia?

BACKGROUND: Finger and hand prints are formed during the late first and second trimester of foetal development, after which they remain unchanged. Their expression may be influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Some studies have suggested that a reduced total finger ridge count (TFRC) and, in particular, a reduce total a-b ridge count (TABRC), may be associated with schizophrenia. AIM: To study these two variables in a large, ethnically homogenous sample and to compare our findings with those of other recent studies. METHOD: Finger and hand prints of 150 people with DSM-III-R s

A Rapp-Hodgkin like syndrome in three sibs: clinical, dental and dermatoglyphic study.

Rapp-Hodgkin ectodermal dysplasia is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by distinctive craniofacies, cleft lip or palate, oligodontia or anodontia, hypoplasia of the nails, and a decrease in or absence of the sweat glands and hair follicles. We have identified a family in which three children display clinical features similar to Rapp-Hodgkin syndrome. The father and two other sisters of the patient had normal facial features, but had short stature and had dental anomalies, the latter suggestive of ectodermal dysplasia. The overall clinical, dental, and dermatoglyphic findings of thes
