Occupational and environmental exposures and cancers in developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Over the past few decades, there has been a decline in cancers attributable to environmental and occupational carcinogens of asbestos, arsenic, and indoor and outdoor air pollution in high-income countries. For low- to middle-income countries (LMICs), however, these exposures are likely to increase as industrialization expands and populations grow. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review the evidence on the cancer risks and burdens of selected environmental and occupational exposures in less-developed economies. FINDINGS: A causal association has been established between a

Alternative approaches to cervical cancer screening for developing countries.

Cervical cancer remains the most common cancer among women living in developing countries, largely because of the failure either to initiate or sustain effective cervical-cancer screening programmes. This potentially preventable and curable cancer continues to cause high mortality among relatively young women residing in low-resource countries. Cytology as a screening test, linked with a robust healthcare infrastructure, has significantly affected cervical cancer prevention in countries that have had sufficient resources to establish and sustain well-conducted programmes. The failure to establ

Assessment of protein adequacy in developing countries: quality matters.

Dietary protein and amino acid requirement recommendations for normal "Работает" children and adults have varied considerably with 2007 FAO/WHO protein requirement estimates for children lower, but dietary essential AA requirements for adults more than doubled. Requirement estimates as presented do not account for common living conditions, which are prevalent in developing countries such as energy deficit, infection burden and added functional demands for protein and AAs. This study examined the effect of adjusting total dietary protein for quality and digestibility (PDCAAS) and of correcting c

The emerging epidemiology of mould infections in developing countries.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review describes the emerging trends of mould infections in developing countries, and highlights the major epidemiological differences from the developed countries. RECENT FINDINGS: The limited data available from developing countries suggest an alarming increase in invasive mould infections, especially aspergillosis and mucormycosis, and also a difference in risk factors and causative agents between the developed and developing world. Sino-orbital, cerebral and ophthalmic infections due to Aspergillus flavus are the major clinical types in aspergillosis, after

Screening criteria for retinopathy of prematurity in developing countries.

PURPOSE: Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a serious problem which potentially can lead to blindness. The objective of this study is to detect the incidence of ROP and the number of preterm babies requiring treatment for ROP in our center and to establish the screening criteria for our country. METHODS: A total of 801 babies with a gestational age less than 37 weeks were screened for ROP. Babies with a gestational age (GA) less than 32 weeks (n=348) were assigned as group 1. Babies with a GA between 32 and 34 weeks (n=335) were assigned as group 2 and between 35 and 37 weeks (n=98) were ass

Biotechnology developments in the livestock sector in developing countries.

Global meat and milk consumption is exponentially increasing due to population growth, urbanization and changes in lifestyle in the developing world. This is an excellent opportunity for developing countries to improve the livestock sector by using technological advances. Biotechnology is one of the avenues for improved production in the "Livestock revolution". Biotechnology developments applied to livestock health, nutrition, breeding and reproduction are improving with a reasonable pace in developing countries. Simple bio-techniques such as artificial insemination have been well implemented

New strategies for providing hormonal contraception in developing countries.

Even with progress in increasing access to effective contraception over the past decades, and the growing range of contraceptive methods available on the market, women in developing countries continue to report an unmet need for family planning. This constraint continues to challenge reproductive health policies and programs, while the momentum of population growth and the young age structure in developing countries leads to larger numbers of potential contraceptive users and increasing global demand in contraceptive markets. Of late, there is a renewed focus on increasing access to long-actin

[Traveler's vaccine use among Japanese expatriates in developing countries].

Traveler's vaccinations are recommended for preventing infectious disease among overseas travelers. Focusing on Japanese expatriate adults residing in developing countries, we report our results for 2002 and 2005 vaccination status. Positive responses to the statement "Had traveler's vaccination before leaving Japan" increased from 49.9% in 2002 to 55.8% in 2005. Regionally the vaccination rate was high among those traveling in South Asia and Tropical Africa, and vaccination rates high in all regions for hepatitis A and B and tetanus. Vaccinations rates for rabies, yellow fever, Japanese encep

Impact of mycotoxins on human health in developing countries.

Adverse human health effects from the consumption of mycotoxins have occurred for many centuries. Although mycotoxin contamination of agricultural products still occurs in the developed world, the application of modern agricultural practices and the presence of a legislatively regulated food processing and marketing system have greatly reduced mycotoxin exposure in these populations. At the mycotoxin contamination levels generally found in food products traded in these market economies, adverse human health effects have largely been overcome. However, in the developing world, where climatic an

Speeding up coeliac disease diagnosis in the developing countries.

BACKGROUND: Anti-transglutaminase antibodies are highly predictive markers of active coeliac disease. Because limited facilities are available for routine use of anti-transglutaminase antibodies assays in developing countries, a simple, economical immunological test would represent a great step forward in the screening of coeliac disease. AIM: We determined the prevalence of coeliac disease in two different populations living in an urban area and in a sub-urban impoverished area of Recife (Brazil), using two rapid tests based on detection of anti-transglutaminase antibodies in serum and in on

Tuberculin testing to detect latent tuberculosis in developing countries.

Despite the multiple studies done over several decades that have established the utility of the tuberculin skin test (TST) for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis, the test is rarely used in developing countries experiencing a resurgence of tuberculosis. Nevertheless, several clinical trials have found that treatment of HIV-positive or HIV-negative persons with latent tuberculosis is effective in the prevention of the clinical activation of tuberculosis. Clinicians commonly justify their failure to diagnose and treat latent tuberculosis with the belief that BCG vaccine, even when it is used i

Serious bacterial infections in newborn infants in developing countries.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The overwhelming majority of the world's annual 4 million neonatal deaths occur in developing countries. This review therefore briefly addresses the burden, aetiology, prevention and management of serious neonatal bacterial infections in low-income settings. RECENT FINDINGS: Bacterial infection is the biggest cause of neonatal admissions to hospitals, and probably the biggest cause of morbidity in the community, but its burden is unclear. The commonest serious infections involve bacteraemia, meningitis and respiratory infection, and case fatality rates may be as high as 45%

Acute viral bronchiolitis and its sequelae in developing countries.

Acute viral bronchiolitis (AVB) is a common disease found throughout the world. Various aspects of it are being studied: its epidemiology, diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Most of these studies are being conducted in developed countries, with only a few taking place in developing countries. Risk factors such as poor nutrition, an adverse environment and early weaning should be studied where these features are common. Treatment aspects such as cost-effectiveness in low income settings need further study. Use of ribavirin and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-immunoglobulin are good examples.
