We hypothesized an association between foot type, foot deformity, and foot ulceration and conducted an analysis of a well-characterized, high-risk diabetic population of 398 subjects. The average age was 62 years of age and 74% of the study population were males. Foot-type distributions were 19.5% pes cavus (high arch), 51.5% neutrally aligned (normal arch), and 29.0% pes planus (low arch). We quantified the presence of hallux valgus (23.9%), hammer/claw toes (46.7%), and hallux limitus (24.4%). A significant association was found between foot type and hallux valgus (p = 0.003); pes planus fee

BACKGROUND: The quality of life (QoL) of diabetic foot ulcer patients is worse than that of diabetic patients. The Diabetic Foot Ulcer Scale-Short Form (DFS-SF) is a readily available instrument used to evaluate the quality of life of diabetic foot ulcer individuals. The aim of this study was to translate the DFS-SF into Chinese, followed by an evaluation of its validity and reliability.
METHODS: This study was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, we followed the Brislin's Translation and Back-translation model to translate the DFS-SF into Mandarin Chinese. In the second phase, we exa

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) recurrence.
METHODS: A total of 573 patients with DFUs were recruited and divided into an initial group (395 patients) and a recurrence group (178 patients). The factors related to recurrence were analyzed using multivariate regression.
RESULTS: The recurrence group had longer diabetes duration (odds ratio [OR] 192; 95% confidence interval 120, 252 vs. 156; 96, 240); lower glycated hemoglobin levels (OR 8.1; 95% CI 6.8, 9.6 vs. 9.1; 7.4, 10.5), and higher rates than the initial group of amputation (37.5% vs. 2.0%), hi

The diabetic Charcot foot syndrome is a serious and potentially limb-threatening lower-extremity complication of diabetes. First described in 1883, this enigmatic condition continues to challenge even the most experienced practitioners. Now considered an inflammatory syndrome, the diabetic Charcot foot is characterized by varying degrees of bone and joint disorganization secondary to underlying neuropathy, trauma, and perturbations of bone metabolism. An international task force of experts was convened by the American Diabetes Association and the American Podiatric Medical Association in Janua

BACKGROUND: India is rapidly becoming the diabetes capital of the world, with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) emerging as one of the most common and debilitating complications. They significantly impair quality of life and, if untreated, may lead to lower limb amputation in up to 12% of cases. Various treatment methods are available, and this study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and clinical outcomes of diperoxochloric acid (DPA) in the management of DFUs at a tertiary care center.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A prospective study was conducted from September 2022 to September 2024, involving 50 patients

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) represent a tremendous burden to health care systems. Offloading is one of the key tenants to healing DFU and knee-high irremovable offloading devices are considered the gold standard for offloading DFU. However, the gold standard is rarely utilized in clinical practice. Patients' limited tolerance for such devices is one of a number of reasons that have been attributed to the lack of use of these devices. The practice of evidence-based medicine relies on shared decision making by pairing patients' values and preferences with the best available evidence. The present

To identify the incidence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection, reinfection and clinical outcomes. Four hundred forty-six patients that were admitted to the hospital with moderate or severe foot infections were retrospectively reviewed. Tissue and bone cultures were obtained from the index hospital admission. Conversion was defined as methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus in the first culture and subsequently MRSA when there was a reinfection. The incidence of MRSA was 7.8% (n = 35), with no significant difference between soft tissue infections (7.7%) and ost

INTRODUCTION: Foot burns represent a small part of the body with many challenges. The impact of diabetes on clinical outcomes adds further issues in management that clinicians must consider in their management. These factors have serious implications on morbidity and long term sequelae. Our aim is to analyse epidemiological trends of foot burns and examine the differences between diabetic and non-diabetics at Concord hospital from 2014 to 2019.
METHODS: A retrospective audit from 2014-19 at Concord General Repatriation Hospital Burns Unit summarised patient demographics, burn injury, diabetic

INTRODUCTION Early detection of diabetic retinopathy (DR) is crucial for preventing irreversible blindness. Recent studies identified some of the genetic factors involved in the pathology of DR, although their precise underlying mechanisms remain unclear. OBJECTIVES This pilot study aimed to determine genetic predictors of DR among patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and diabetic foot (DF) based on pathogenetic pathways. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study included 114 patients with T2D and DF (64 with DR, 50 without DR). Genetic analysis was performed for each patient and the following al

The onset of autonomic neuropathy can often be insidious and may be associated with somatic neuropathy. Whether the autonomic dysfunction has a primary role or simply serves as a marker for other disease processes remains unclear. There is no doubt, however, that autonomic neuropathy, once present, greatly complicates the diabetic state and the management of the diabetic patient in the perioperative period and also statistically increases the mortality risk. Hopefully the testing of diabetic patients for the presence of autonomic neuropathy will become more prevalent. The heightened awareness

BACKGROUNDS AND OBJECTIVE: Diabetic foot is a relatively severe complication in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), with peripheral neuropathy and angiopathy frequently serving as risk factors. However, it is unknown how the other major systemic metabolic factors impacted the profile of these patients, besides glucose management. Thus, we investigated the distinct characteristics of patients with diabetic foot ulcers and their relationships with angiopathy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We obtained the laboratory data of 334 diabetic patients at Shanghai Pudong Hospital from 2020 to 2023. The compa

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) are severe complications in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Selenium (Se) is an important element with antioxidant properties, which is crucial for human homeostasis. In this narrative mini review, we summarise the evidence on the potential association of Se with DPN and DFUs. Generally, in most of the limited number of studies, serum Se levels were significantly lower in subjects with DPN or DFUs. In addition, one study demonstrated that urinary Se levels were lower in the DPN group. Nevertheless, further investigations are

This review discusses the evidence on diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with diabetic foot ulceration (DFU). A systematic literature review was performed on PubMed, Medline, Springer Nature, and Scopus, following the PRISMA guidelines, using the following terms, individually or in combination: "diabetic foot ulcer" OR "diabetic foot syndrome" OR "DFU" and "diabetic retinopathy." The initial search yielded 648 articles published between 1975 and 2020. After applying exclusion and inclusion criteria, a total of 9 articles were analyzed, assessing the correlations between DR and DFU. In all c
