Post Hoc Analysis of a Randomized Controlled Trial on Fasting and Plant-Based Diet in Rheumatoid Arthritis (NutriFast): Nutritional Supply and Impact on Dietary Behavior.

This study aimed at comparing the nutrient supply and dietary behaviors during a plant-based diet (PBD) combined with time-restricted eating (TRE) to standard dietary recommendations in rheumatoid arthritis patients. In this open-label, randomized, controlled clinical trial, patients were assigned to either a 7-day fast followed by an 11-week PBD including TRE (A) or a 12-week anti-inflammatory diet following official German guidelines (German Nutrition Society, DGE) (B). Dietary habits were assessed by 3-day food records at weeks -1, 4 and 9 and food frequency questionnaires. 41 out of 53 par

Temporal dynamics of hepatic mRNA levels of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism-related genes in rainbow trout: Impact of a plant-based diet from first feeding.

Early-life nutrition plays a critical role in shaping metabolic trajectories in fish, particularly in carnivorous species like rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), which displays limited capacity to utilize plant-based diets. This study investigated the temporal changes in mRNA abundance of key hepatic genes involved in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism from first feeding to 100 days post-first meal in rainbow trout fry fed either a commercial-like or fully plant-based diet. mRNA abundance was quantified by RT-qPCR at six time points, revealing marked ontogenetic shifts in metabolic gene profi

Dos and Don'ts in Kidney Nutrition: Practical Considerations of a Panel of Experts on Protein Restriction and Plant-Based Diets for Patients Living with Chronic Kidney Disease.

Dietary management is a pillar of chronic kidney disease (CKD) treatment. While some rules are the same as dietary prescriptions for the general population and those suffering from other chronic diseases (energy intake, salt intake, avoidance of ultra-processed food and limited intake of animal fats), in non-dialysis-dependent patients living with CKD, the specific focus is on protein intake. Low-protein diets (LPDs) and supplemented very low protein diets (sVLPDs) have been successfully employed to decrease the symptoms of people living with non-dialysis-dependent CKD, delay the progression o

A Prospective, Multi-Center Study to Evaluate the Safety and Efficacy of a Vegan Nutraceutical to Improve Hair Growth and Quality in Females Following a Plant-Based Diet.

Hair thinning affects upwards of 50% of women by age 50, impacting their social-emotional wellbeing. It is a condition now thought to be driven by a multi-factorial etiology, including diet and nutrition. Women following vegan, vegetarian, or other plant-based diets have specific needs for nutrients traditionally sourced from animals, which could affect hair health. To support hair growth and quality in women following a plant-based diet, a novel vegan nutraceutical (Nutrafol Women's Vegan Capsules, Nutraceutical Wellness, Inc., New York, NY) was evaluated for its ability to support hair

Associations of Increased Plant Protein Intake Ratio with Adherence of Low-Protein Diet, Acid-Base Status, and Body Composition in CKD Stage 3-5.

Background/Objectives: Increasing evidence indicates that a vegetarian diet may provide renal protection and improve metabolic health in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, transitioning from an omnivorous to a vegetarian diet can be challenging. A more practical alternative could be to increase the consumption of plant protein. In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the association between increased plant protein intake and adherence to a low-protein diet (LPD) and the effect on biochemical parameters, body composition, and muscle strength in patients with non-dialysi

Knowledge, Attitudes and Application of Critical Nutrient Supplementation in Vegan Diets among Healthcare Professionals-Survey Results from a Medical Congress on Plant-Based Nutrition.

Plant-based diets are associated with numerous health benefits but also bear risks of micronutrient deficiencies if inadequately planned. The risk of nutrient deficiencies can be reliably reduced by supplementation but requires risk-awareness. We distributed a paper-and-pencil questionnaire to n = 902 healthcare professionals attending a congress on plant-based nutrition (VegMed 2018, Berlin). On the day of the survey (21 April 2018), n = 475 questionnaires were returned and analyzed descriptively. Of the n = 213 strict vegan participants, 2% (n = 5) took no supplements at all. All supplementi

Plant-Based Functional Formulae Mitigate Western Diet-Induced MASLD by Modulating Hepatic Oxidative Stress, Inflammation as Well as Nrf-2/HO-1 and NF-κB Gene Expression.

Psyllium has long been used to improve satiety and control weight. Leek and dill leaves are abundant in bioactive substances that have been confirmed to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Our goal was to assess the hepatoprotective effects of two formulae (dill and psyllium or leek and psyllium) against oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in a metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) rat model. Twenty four rats were used in this study. Rats were given a high-fat, high-sucrose diet (HF/HS), a Western diet, to create a MASLD model. The two formulae s

Effects of a Plant-Based Diet During the First Month of Feeding on Alevin Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in the Development of Tongue Sensory System Regulating Feeding Behavior.

Taste perception is essential for animals to detect nutrients, providing critical dietary information necessary for growth and survival. Since the early growth performance of alevin rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) can be affected by food intake influenced by terrestrial ingredients without fish meal and fish oil, our study aimed to evaluate the role of taste receptors in nutrient detection and the associated signaling pathways leading to central nervous system activation in the regulation of feeding behavior. We conducted a nutritional experiment from the first feeding to 30 days, comparin

Plant Protein-based Diet Fortified With Isoleucine, Leucine, and Valine Mitigates the Carbon Tetrachloride-induced Damage on Caspase-3 Gene Expression and Tissue Architecture: Histomorphological and Immunohistochemical Approaches.

Maintaining a strong immune system and protecting the body from chemicals is essential for overall well-being. The exploitation of the major plant-derived bioactive compounds potentially accounts for prospective immunomodulators. The advantages of plant protein and/or branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) likely suggest their potential as effective alternative treatment against sustainable chemical damage; existing research regarding their biological impact remains inconclusive. Specifically, limited clarity on the effects of plant protein alone or in combination with BCAAs on the toxic model of

Aggressive Intravenous Hydration and a Defined Plant-Based Diet Safely and Effectively Treated Type 5 Cardiorenal Syndrome with Stage E Heart Failure-Related Cardiogenic Shock: A Case Report.

Background and Clinical Significance: Heart failure and kidney diseases often coexist and are difficult to clinically manage. Dysfunction in either organ exacerbates dysfunction in the other, potentially leading to cardiorenal syndrome (CRS). CRS has five different subtypes, with CRS type 5 being the most problematic given that it consists of an acute insult superimposed upon chronic CRS. Additionally, type 5 CRS can be complicated by heart failure-related cardiogenic shock (HF-CS), which is associated with increased hospitalizations and has a high 1-year mortality rate. The standard treatment

High Levels of Vitamin A in Plant-Based Diets for Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) Juveniles, Effects on Growth, Skeletal Anomalies, Bone Molecular Markers, and Histological Morphology.

Substitution of fish-based ingredients may alter the nutritional profile of the feeds, including the vitamin contents, ultimately leading to unbalanced vitamin supply. Vitamin A plays an essential role in epithelium preservation, cell differentiation, reproduction, and vision. It also intervenes in skeletogenesis through chondrocytes development. Therefore, low levels of vitamin A may cause poor growth and abnormal bone development among other symptoms. Besides, in gilthead seabream excess vitamin A altered bone structure and homeostasis, indicating that an upper level for vitamin A in feeds f

Association between long-term ambient air pollution and incident inflammatory bowel disease across levels of adherence to a plant-based diet: a prospective cohort study in the UK Biobank.

BACKGROUND: Ambient air pollution is a potential environmental risk factor for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), whereas a plant-based diet may be protective. However, whether such a dietary pattern modifies the association between long-term air pollution exposure and IBD risk remains unclear. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 165,722 participants from the UK Biobank. Annual average concentrations of ambient air pollutants were estimated using air dispersion models. The plant-based diet index (PDI) was calculated based on the intake of 17 major food groups recorded in the 24-h d

Elevated concentrations of organic and inorganic forms of iron in plant-based diets for channel catfish prevent anemia but damage liver and intestine, respectively, without impacting growth performance.

We compared the effects of using inorganic and organic forms of iron in plant-based diets on catfish performance in a feeding trial with 6-g catfish fingerlings. The objective was to determine whether dietary iron in excess of known requirements negatively affected the fish. Five diets supplemented with 0 (basal), 125, 250 mg Fe/kg of either FeSO4 or iron methionine were formulated. Weight gain, feed conversion ratio, hepatosomatic index, and survival were similar among diets. Plasma and intestine iron concentration was similar among diets.
