Effect of Roselle Flower Extract (Hibiscus sabdariffa Linn.) on Reducing Steatosis and Steatohepatitis in Vitamin B12 Deficiency Rat Model.

Background and Objectives: Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) can occur as a result of micronutrient deficiencies. Hibiscus sabdarifa, a plant used in traditional medicine, contains ingredients that can help prevent this process. This study looked at the potency of Hibiscus sabdariffa Ethanol Extract (HSE) to prevent homocysteine-induced liver damage in animals that were deficient in vitamin B12. Materials and Methods: A comparative study of the effects of roselle extract is presented in an experimental design. Thirty Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into six groups using randomization.

Maternal voluntary physical activity attenuates delayed neurodevelopment in malnourished rats.

What is the central question of this study? In the present study, a reproducible model of maternal voluntary physical activity was developed to evaluate the adaptive response of physical activity by attenuating the effects of maternal undernutrition on physical features, reflex ontogeny and growth trajectory of offspring during development. What is the main finding and its importance? Maternal physical activity may induce neuronal maturation of sensorimotor connections impacting on the patterns of locomotor activity in malnourished offspring. Thus, physical activity should be considered as a t

Long-Term Dietary Changes in Subjects with Glucose Galactose Malabsorption Secondary to Biallelic Mutations of SLC5A1.

BACKGROUND: Glucose galactose malabsorption (GGM) is a congenital diarrheal disorder of intestinal Na+/glucose cotransport (SGLT1/SLC5A1). The required glucose and galactose-restricted diet has been well described in infancy, but long-term nutrition follow-up is limited. AIM: To perform a comprehensive nutritional assessment on a cohort of patients with GGM to gain insights into the consumption patterns within the population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study examining dietary intake of a GGM cohort using prospective food records. The calories and nutrients of all foods, beverages, and condim

Effects of anti-aging diets and exercise on age-related musculoskeletal diseases via gut microbiota modulation.

INTRODUCTION: This review summarizes evidence on how anti-aging diets and exercise influence age-related musculoskeletal diseases through modulation of the gut microbiota. With population aging, these diseases are public health concerns. The gut microbiota regulates bone, joint, and muscle health via the gut‑joint, gut‑bone, and gut‑muscle axis. Few reviews integrate diet-exercise synergy with mechanistic pathways linking microbial changes to tissue outcomes. DISCUSSION: Anti‑aging dietary strategies, classified into caloric restriction (ketogenic diet, fasting‑mimicking diet, intermittent fa

Immunorestorative effects of Limosilactobacillus reuteri LR6 in protein-energy malnourished mice under pathogen and allergen challenge.

Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) is the most severe form of malnutrition, often linked with impaired immunity and increased susceptibility to infections. In this study, mice were initially fed a normal semi-synthetic well-nourished diet for one week and then divided into five groups. The animals in Group C (control) continued on the normal well-nourished diet, while Groups M (malnourished), SM (skim milk), PFM (probiotic fermented milk), and BS (probiotic suspension) received a protein- and energy-restricted diet (2% casein, 315.2 kcal) until PEM was established. Later, the groups SM, PFM and

A reduced CP level without medicinal zinc oxide does not alter the intestinal morphology in weaned pigs 24 days post-weaning.

The use of medicinal zinc oxide (ZnO) to prevent diarrhoea post-weaning will be banned in the EU from 2022. Therefore, new alternatives are needed to avoid an increase in diarrhoea and higher antibiotic use. A low dietary CP level has shown to lower the frequency of diarrhoea in pigs, due to lower microbial protein fermentation in the colon as well as improved conditions in the small intestine after weaning. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of decreased CP levels post-weaning as an alternative to medicinal ZnO on gut morphology and histopathology. Five hundred and sixty pi

Broiler response to diet energy.

Male broiler chickens were fed corn-soybean diets providing 2,700, 2,900, 3,100 or 3,300 kcal ME/kg. In all experiments, each treatment was tested with three replicate groups of 30 birds grown to 49 d of age. In Experiment 1, birds consumed the various diets ad libitum whereas in Experiment 2, all birds received identical and restricted quantities of feed so as to ensure variable intakes of energy. In a third experiment, after 7 d of age, broilers had access to feed in two feeders that contained only the highest level of energy, or the 3,300 kcal ME/kg diet in combination with one of the other

Dietary protein and zinc restrictions independently modify a Heligmosomoides polygyrus (Nematoda) infection in mice.

The effects of dietary protein and zinc restrictions on Heligmosomoides polygyrus were compared following primary and challenge infection in female BALB/c mice fed either control (24%), marginal (7%) or low (3%) protein combined with either high or low zinc (60 or 3 mg Zn/kg diet). Dietary protein restriction (3%) resulted in significantly lower body weight gain. As well, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) significantly decreased with decreasing dietary protein level. However, neither plasma albumin concentration nor relative thymus or spleen weights were reduced. Marginal zinc deficiency was confirmed

Effect of Gender and Various Diets on Bile Acid Profile and Related Genes in Mice.

Diet is an important factor for many diseases. Previous studies have demonstrated that several diets had remarkable effects on bile acid (BA) homeostasis, but no comprehensive information for both genders has been reported. Therefore, the current study characterized the nine most used laboratory animal diets fed to both genders of mice for a comparable evaluation of the topic. The results revealed that marked gender difference of BA homeostasis is ubiquitous in mice fed the various diets, and of the nine diets fed to mice, the atherogenic and calorie-restricted diets had the most marked effect

Metabolic advantages of a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet in in patients with metabolically unhealthy obesity.

Whether dietary macronutrient content has metabolic benefits beyond weight loss is unknown. In this issue, a carefully controlled trial demonstrates that a higher-protein, lower-carbohydrate dietary pattern improves hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism in people with prediabetes and steatosis compared to a lower-protein, high-carbohydrate diet, even though all groups lost 10% of body weight.

Rearing broilers as mixed or single-sex: relevance to performance, coefficient of variation, and flock uniformity.

With known variation in performance between male and female broilers and the fact that sourcing single-sex birds for use in research is becoming increasingly difficult, it becomes important to determine the effect of rearing method with male and female broilers on between-pen variation and body weight (BW) uniformity. We evaluated the performance response of broilers reared as single or mixed-sex to standard and reduced crude protein (CP) diets. The study was designed as a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments consisting of 672 Cobb-500 broilers assigned to 48 floor pens with 6 treatments,

Nutritional edema in a rat model of protein deficiency: significance of the dietary potassium and sodium content.

The importance of the levels of dietary sodium and potassium in the etiology of gross nutritional edema in a rat model was explored. For this purpose a mineral mixture (EAM) was designed to permit changing the levels of sodium and potassium while maintaining other components of the mixture. The mixture supplied (as % of diet) 0.075 sodium and 0.270 potassium. In study 1 the EAM mixture was found to support adequate growth (approximately 6 g/d) in well-nourished rats. In study 2 the effects of feeding the diet in either agar gel or dry form were explored. The agar gel diet did not aggravate dis

A circadian rhythm-restricted diet regulates autophagy to improve cognitive function and prolong lifespan.

Diet and circadian rhythms have been found to have a profound impact on health, disease, and aging. Skipping breakfast, eating late, and overeating have adverse effects on the body's metabolism and increase the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Disturbance of circadian rhythms has been associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and other diseases. Abnormal deposition of amyloid β (Aβ) and tau proteins in the brain and impaired synaptic function are linked to cognitive dysfunction. A restrictive diet following the circadian rhythm c

Phenylketonuria: protein content and amino acids profile of dishes for phenylketonuric patients. The relevance of phenylalanine.

Phenylketonuria is an inborn error of metabolism, involving, in most cases, a deficient activity of phenylalanine hydroxylase. Neonatal diagnosis and a prompt special diet (low phenylalanine and natural-protein restricted diets) are essential to the treatment. The lack of data concerning phenylalanine contents of processed foodstuffs is an additional limitation for an already very restrictive diet. Our goals were to quantify protein (Kjeldahl method) and amino acid (18) content (HPLC/fluorescence) in 16 dishes specifically conceived for phenylketonuric patients, and compare the most relevant r

Liver transplantation from a live donor to a patient with maple syrup urine disease: Two case reports.

Liver transplantation were reported in patients with classic maple syrup urine disease in the literature. Branched chain alpha keto acid dehydrogenase activity can be improved in patients after transplant, and a protein-restricted diet is usually not needed. The first patient was a boy aged 2,5 years who presented with frequent ketosis attacks and epileptic seizures, and the second patient was an 11-month-old boy who also presented with frequent ketosis episodes, both despite adherence to diet therapy. Both patients received liver transplantations from live donors. A low protein diet was no lo

Fetuin-A decrease induced by a low-protein diet enhances vascular calcification in uremic rats with hyperphosphatemia.

Although dietary phosphate restriction is important for treating hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease, it remains unclear whether a low-protein diet (LPD), which contains low phosphate, has beneficial effects on malnutrition, inflammation, and vascular calcification. The effects of LPD on inflammation, malnutrition, and vascular calcification were therefore assessed in rats. Rats were fed a normal diet or diets containing 0.3% adenine and low/normal protein and low/high phosphate. After 6 wk, serum and urinary biochemical parameters, systemic inflammation, and vascular cal

Restriction of Individual Branched-Chain Amino Acids has Distinct Effects on the Development and Progression of Alzheimer's Disease in 3xTg Mice.

Dietary protein regulates metabolic health and aging, with many benefits of a low protein diet resulting from reduced consumption of the three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), leucine, isoleucine, and valine. Each BCAA has distinct physiological and molecular effects, and while restriction of protein or all three BCAAs improves cognition in mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the role of each individual BCAA on AD is unknown. Here, we investigate the impact of restricting leucine, isoleucine, or valine on metabolism, AD pathology, molecular signaling, and cognition in male and female

Transiently restricting individual amino acids protects Drosophila melanogaster against multiple stressors.

Nutrition and resilience are linked, though it is not yet clear how diet confers stress resistance or the breadth of stressors that it can protect against. We have previously shown that transiently restricting an essential amino acid can protect Drosophila melanogaster against nicotine poisoning. Here, we sought to characterize the nature of this dietary-mediated protection and determine whether it was sex, amino acid and/or nicotine specific. When we compared between sexes, we found that isoleucine deprivation increases female, but not male, nicotine resistance. Surprisingly, we found that th

Exclusion of sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase from mitochondria causes Leigh-like disease in mice by impairing sulfide metabolism.

Leigh syndrome is the most common inherited mitochondrial disease in children and is often fatal within the first few years of life. In 2020, mutations in the gene encoding sulfide:quinone oxidoreductase (SQOR), a mitochondrial protein, were identified as a cause of Leigh syndrome. Here, we report that mice with a mutation in the gene encoding SQOR (SqorΔN/ΔN mice), which prevented SQOR from entering mitochondria, had clinical and pathological manifestations of Leigh syndrome. SqorΔN/ΔN mice had increased blood lactate levels that were associated with markedly decreased complex IV activity and

The effects of recombinant human parathyroid hormone, rhPTH(1-84), on bone mass in undernourished rats.

Energy intake restriction reduces bone formation both in protein-energy malnourished children and in undernourished rats, and such conditions might cause partial or irreversible bone loss. Because the use of anti-resorptive agents in this situation is seemingly limited, we examined the effect of the anabolic agent, recombinant human parathyroid hormone (rhPTH(1-84)), on bones in undernourished conditions. First, the osteopenic changes of rat bones with 40% restricted diet for 4 weeks were confirmed. Subsequently, another set of the rats were randomized into four groups and studied for 8 weeks:
