High-fat diets reduce male reproductive success in animal models: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Sperm counts have shown a progressive decline across the world since the mid-1900s. Global rates of obesity have been climbing at a similarly alarming rate, suggesting that these two factors may be linked. However, studies examining the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and male fertility have produced conflicting results. These discrepancies among studies are commonly attributed to limitations that are inherent in human studies such as correlational data and confounding factors-limitations that are absent from animal studies. Hence, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis

Cordycepin reduces weight through regulating gut microbiota in high-fat diet-induced obese rats.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of studies have shown that obesity is the key etiological agent of cardiovascular diseases, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes and several kinds of cancer and that gut microbiota change was one of the reasons suffering from obesity. At present, the gut microbiota has gained increased attention as a potential energy metabolism organ. Our recent study reported that cordycepin, a major bioactive component separated from Cordyceps militaris, prevented body weight gain in mice fed a high-fat diet directly acting to adipocytes, however, the effect of c

Increased plasma cholesterol esterification by LCAT reduces diet-induced atherosclerosis in SR-BI knockout mice.

LCAT, a plasma enzyme that esterifies cholesterol, has been proposed to play an antiatherogenic role, but animal and epidemiologic studies have yielded conflicting results. To gain insight into LCAT and the role of free cholesterol (FC) in atherosclerosis, we examined the effect of LCAT over- and underexpression in diet-induced atherosclerosis in scavenger receptor class B member I-deficient [Scarab(-/-)] mice, which have a secondary defect in cholesterol esterification. Scarab(-/-)×LCAT-null [Lcat(-/-)] mice had a decrease in HDL-cholesterol and a high plasma ratio of FC/total cholesterol (TC

Pharmacological Treatment with Annexin A1 Reduces Atherosclerotic Plaque Burden in LDLR-/- Mice on Western Type Diet.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate therapeutic effects of annexin A1 (anxA1) on atherogenesis in LDLR-/- mice. METHODS: Human recombinant annexin A1 (hr-anxA1) was produced by a prokaryotic expression system, purified and analysed on phosphatidylserine (PS) binding and formyl peptide receptor (FPR) activation. Biodistribution of 99mTechnetium-hr-anxA1 was determined in C57Bl/6J mice. 12 Weeks old LDLR-/- mice were fed a Western Type Diet (WTD) during 6 weeks (Group I) or 12 weeks (Group P). Mice received hr-anxA1 (1 mg/kg) or vehicle by intraperitoneal injection 3 times per week for a period of 6 week

Reduced-gliadin wheat bread: an alternative to the gluten-free diet for consumers suffering gluten-related pathologies.

Wheat flour cannot be tolerated by those who suffer allergies to gluten. Human pathologies associated with grain proteins have increased worldwide in recent years, and the only effective treatment available is a lifelong gluten-free diet, which is complicated to follow and detrimental to gut health. This manuscript describes the development of wheat bread potentially suitable for celiac patients and other gluten-intolerant individuals. We have made bread using wheat flour with very low content of the specific gluten proteins (near gliadin-free) that are the causal agents for pathologies such a

Interferon-γ deficiency reduces neointimal formation in a model of endoluminal endothelial injury combined with atherogenic diet.

Interferon (IFN)-γ has been implicated in restenosis, however its precise role in the pathophysiology of neointimal formation following angioplasty is unclear, as it has been shown to both promote and inhibit neointimal formation. Dietary-induced hypercholesterolemia enhances injury-mediated neointimal formation, associated with increased systemic inflammation and serum IFN-γ. This study examined the effect of IFN-γ gene deficiency ((-/-)) on neointimal formation in a mouse model of endothelial injury combined with an atherogenic diet. Neointimal formation was induced via endoluminal endotheli

Inclusion of Atlantic salmon in the Chinese diet reduces cardiovascular disease risk markers in dyslipidemic adult men.

Although the beneficial effects of n-3 fatty acids on several physiologic functions have been widely reported, information about the effects of oily fish in the Asian diet on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk is diminutive. We hypothesize that daily inclusion of oily fish for 8 weeks in the Chinese diet will elevate serum eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) levels and reduce CVD risk markers in dyslipidemic adult men, comparable with the effects generally observed by inclusion of oily fish in the Western diet. In this 8-week randomized, parallel-arm, food-based intervent

Ketogenic diet prevents seizure and reduces myoclonic jerks in rats with cardiac arrest-induced cerebral hypoxia.

Although the mechanism underlying the anti-epileptic effects of a ketogenic diet (KD) is not known, KD is reported to be an effective treatment for intractable epilepsy, in particular among children. Here, we evaluated whether a KD can reduce posthypoxic seizure and myoclonic jerks in a rat model of cardiac arrest-induced cerebral hypoxia. In this study, rats were divided into two groups: one group received a normal diet while the other group was fed a KD for 25 days before being subjected to cardiac arrest-induced cerebral hypoxia. We found that rats fed a normal diet developed seizures and s

Walnuts reduce aortic ET-1 mRNA levels in hamsters fed a high-fat, atherogenic diet.

Walnut consumption is associated with reduced coronary vascular disease (CVD) risk; however, the mechanisms responsible remain incompletely understood. Recent clinical studies suggested that these mechanisms involve non-plasma lipid-related effects on endothelial function. Male Golden Syrian hamsters (12 groups, n=10-15) were fed for 26 wk atherosclerotic, high-fat, hyperlipidemic diets with increasing concentrations of whole walnuts (61-150 g/kg diet), or alpha-tocopherol (alpha-T, 8.1-81 mg/kg diet) and single diets with either walnut oil (32 g/kg diet) or pure gamma-tocopherol (gamma-T; 81

What are the long-term benefits of weight reducing diets in adults? A systematic review of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Evidence is needed for the best long-term diet for weight loss, and improvement in cardiac risk and disease in obese adults. METHODS: We systematically reviewed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in any language. We searched 13 databases and handsearched journals. Trials lasted 1 year or more. One investigator extracted the data and a second checked data extraction. Trial quality was assessed. RESULTS: Low fat diets (LFDs) produced significant weight losses up to 36 months (-3.55 kg; 95% CI, -4.54 to -2.55 kg). Blood pressure, lipids and fasting plasma glucose improved with thes

Neutralization of Western diet inhibits bone resorption independently of K intake and reduces cortisol secretion in humans.

A Western-type diet is associated with osteoporosis and calcium nephrolithiasis. On the basis of observations that calcium retention and inhibition of bone resorption result from alkali administration, it is assumed that the acid load inherent in this diet is responsible for increased bone resorption and calcium loss from bone. However, it is not known whether the dietary acid load acts directly or indirectly (i.e., via endocrine changes) on bone metabolism. It is also unclear whether alkali administration affects bone resorption/calcium balance directly or whether alkali-induced calcium reten

High-salt diet enhances vascular reactivity in pregnant rats with normal and reduced uterine perfusion pressure.

High-salt (HS) diet is often associated with increased vascular resistance and arterial pressure; however, the effects of HS intake on the vascular control mechanisms of arterial pressure during pregnancy are unclear. We investigated whether a HS diet during pregnancy is associated with increases in vascular reactivity. Active stress was measured in aortic strips of virgin and normal pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats and a hypertensive pregnant rat model produced by reduction in uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP), fed either normal-sodium (NS, 1%) or HS diet (8%) for 7 days. In endothelium-intact st

PNPLA3-I148M reduces hepatic triacylglycerol secretion and mitigates diet induced left ventricular diastolic dysfunction.

PNPLA3-I148M, the greatest genetic determinant for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), paradoxically associates with reduced cardiovascular disease (CVD); however, the mechanisms are poorly understood. To investigate how PNPLA3-I148M alters hepatic triacylglycerol (TAG) metabolism and influences cardiac function, we expressed human WT-PNPLA3, PNPLA3-I148M, or GFP in the liver of PNPLA3-/- mice and fed them chow or Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH) diet at thermoneutrality. After 4 weeks of MASH diet, PNPLA3‑I148M mice showed reduced hepatic T

Purified Diets Lacking Fermentable Fiber Reduce Microbial Diversity, Alter Epithelial Transcriptome, and Exacerbate Colitis.

Background/Objectives: Dietary fibers play key roles in shaping gut microbiome and intestinal homeostasis. While purified diets offer experimental precision and reproducibility in rodent models, they omit the complex mixture of fermentable and non-fermentable fibers found in grain-based chow diets. We hypothesized that excluding fermentable fiber impairs intestinal homeostasis by reducing microbial metabolites and altering the colonic epithelial transcriptome, thereby increasing susceptibility to inflammation. Methods: Wildtype male C57BL/6 mice were maintained on either a standard grain-based

Bergamot Leaf Extract Is Associated With Reduced Hepatic DNA Strand Breaks in Diet-Induced Obese Rats.

Obesity is a major global public health challenge associated with chronic low-grade inflammation and oxidative stress. Although natural antioxidant compounds have been investigated to mitigate obesity-related molecular damage, the effects of bergamot (Citrus bergamia) leaf extract (BLE) on DNA integrity remains unclear. This study evaluated the effects of BLE on hepatic DNA damage in diet-induced obese rats. Forty Wistar rats were fed either a control or a high-sugar-fat (HSF) diet and treated with BLE by oral gavage. The adiposity index was recorded for all groups, and hepatic DNA damage was

Diet-induced changes in the jejunal microbiota of developing broilers reduce the abundance of Enterococcus hirae and Enterococcus faecium.

Modern broiler breeds allow for high feed efficiency and rapid growth, which come at a cost of increased susceptibility to pathogens and disease. Broiler growth rate, feed efficiency, and health are affected by the composition of the gut microbiota, which in turn is influenced by diet. In this study, we therefore assessed how diet composition can affect the broiler jejunal gut microbiota. A total of 96 broiler chickens were divided into four diet groups: control, coated butyrate supplementation, medium-chain fatty acid supplementation, or a high-fibre low-protein content. Diet groups were sub-

Mediterranean ketogenic diet accounts for reduced pain frequency and intensity in patients with chronic migraine: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: An increasing amount of evidence suggests that migraine is a response to cerebral energy deficiencies or oxidative stress levels that exceed antioxidant capacity. Current pharmacological options are inadequate in treating patients with chronic migraine, and a growing interest focuses on nutritional approaches as non-pharmacological treatments. The ketogenic diet, mimicking fasting that leads to an elevation of ketone bodies, is a therapeutic intervention targeting cerebral metabolism that has recently shown great promise in the prevention of migraines. Moreover, Mediterranean eleme

Laminarin Reduces Cholesterol Uptake and NPC1L1 Protein Expression in High-Fat Diet (HFD)-Fed Mice.

Aberrantly high dietary cholesterol intake and intestinal cholesterol uptake lead to dyslipidemia, one of the risk factors for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Based on previous studies, laminarin, a polysaccharide found in brown algae, has hypolipidemic activity, but its underlying mechanism has not been elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effect of laminarin on intestinal cholesterol uptake in vitro, as well as the lipid and morphological parameters in an in vivo model of high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice, and addressed the question of whether Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 protein (NPC1L1), a

Duodenojejunal Omega Switch Surgery Reduces Oxidative Stress Induced by Cafeteria Diet in Sprague-Dawley Rats.

Over-nutrition with cafeteria diet leads to glycemic control failure and subsequent obesity. Bariatric surgery remains the ultimate treatment option, and when complemented with specific dietary protocol, it may mitigate the effects of oxidative stress induced by a cafeteria diet. The study measured antioxidant marker activity: superoxidase dismutase (SOD) and ceruloplasmin (CER), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and lipid peroxidation marker concentrations: lipofuscin (LS) and malondialdehyde (MDA), in the plasma of 56 Sprague-Dawley rats fed with a cafeteria (HFS) or a control (CD) diet and

A Low FODMAP Diet Reduces Symptoms in Treated Celiac Patients With Ongoing Symptoms-A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: A gluten-free diet usually leads to mucosal remission in celiac disease, but persistent symptoms are common. A low fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) diet is an established treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We have assessed the efficacy of a moderately low FODMAP diet on persistent symptoms in treated celiac patients. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was performed from 2018 to 2019 in 70 adults with biopsy-proven celiac disease. Inclusion criteria were as follows: persistent gastrointestinal symptoms defined by a Gastrointestinal
