Animal vs plant-based processed foods have different effects on body weight: a secondary analysis of a randomized, cross-over trial.

Mediterranean and vegan diets have been extensively studied for health effects. This secondary analysis assessed animal vs plant-based processed foods. We hypothesized that greater intake of minimally processed plant foods and lower intake of animal foods, particularly processed and ultraprocessed, would be associated with lower body weight. In this randomized crossover trial, 62 overweight adults were randomized to a Mediterranean or low-fat vegan diet for 16 weeks, separated by a 4-week washout. Body weight was the primary outcome. Three-day diet records assessed intake of animal- and plant-

Multi-Omic Analysis of the Microbiome and Metabolome in Healthy Subjects Reveals Microbiome-Dependent Relationships Between Diet and Metabolites.

The human microbiome has been associated with health status, and risk of disease development. While the etiology of microbiome-mediated disease remains to be fully elucidated, one mechanism may be through microbial metabolism. Metabolites produced by commensal organisms, including in response to host diet, may affect host metabolic processes, with potentially protective or pathogenic consequences. We conducted multi-omic phenotyping of healthy subjects (N = 136), in order to investigate the interaction between diet, the microbiome, and the metabolome in a cross-sectional sample. We analyzed th

Bone mineral density and body composition of collegiate modern dancers.

This study investigates body composition (BC), bone mineral density (BMD), eating behaviors, and menstrual dysfunction in collegiate modern dancers. Thirty-one female collegiate modern dance majors (D), 18 to 25 years of age, and 30 age-matched controls (C) participated in the study. BC and BMD were measured using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Upper and lower body strength was assessed by chest and leg press one-repetition maximum tests. Participants completed three-day food records, and the diet was analyzed using nutritional software. Menstrual dysfunction (MD) and history of eatin

Disparity between dietary iron intake and iron status of children aged 10-12 years.

Iron status was assessed in a representative sample of 188 adolescents living in a medium-sized city in Poland. Dietary intakes were evaluated using records of diet over a period of seven consecutive days. Subjects were considered to be iron deficient when two or more of the following parameters were abnormal: serum ferritin, transferrin saturation or mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration. Based on this definition, the prevalence of iron deficiency in the investigated sample of children aged from ten to twelve years was 12.7%. Iron deficiency anaemia was defined using the following criter

Diet Quality, Nutrient Intake, and Body Fat Percentage in Women with Infertility and Normal Body Mass Index.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a major public health concern worldwide. While excess body weight is a well-established risk factor for impaired fertility, increasing evidence indicates that elevated body fat content may also occur in women with normal body mass index, a phenotype described as normal-weight obesity. This study aimed to assess associations between diet quality, intake of selected nutrients, and body fat content among women attending an infertility clinic with body mass index (BMI) within the normal range. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 45 women with infertility and no

An automated image-based dietary assessment application: a pilot study.

Accurate assessment of an individual's diet is vital to study the effect of diet on health. Image-based methods, which use images as input, may improve the reliability of dietary assessment. We developed an iOS application that uses computer vision to identify food from images. This study aimed to assess the accuracy of energy intake (EIapp) estimates from the application by comparing them to estimated energy expenditure (EE) and to the EI estimates from a validated dietary assessment tool, the 24-h recall (EIrecall). Participants were recruited from a randomised controlled trial called He Rou

Preliminary Validation of a Food Frequency Questionnaire to Assess Long-Chain Omega-3 Fatty Acid Intake in Eye Care Practice.

Clinical recommendations relating to dietary omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) should consider an individual's baseline intake. The time, cost, and practicality constraints of current techniques for quantifying omega-3 levels limit the feasibility of applying these methods in some settings, such as eye care practice. This preliminary validation study, involving 40 adults, sought to assess the validity of a novel questionnaire, the Clinical Omega-3 Dietary Survey (CODS), for rapidly assessing long-chain omega-3 intake. Estimated dietary intakes of long-chain omega-3s from CODS correlated wit

Mediterranean Diet Score: Associations with Metabolic Products of the Intestinal Microbiome, Carotid Plaque Burden, and Renal Function.

Metabolic products of the intestinal microbiome such as trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) that accumulate in renal failure (gut-derived uremic toxins, GDUTs) affect atherosclerosis and increase cardiovascular risk. We hypothesized that patients on a Mediterranean diet and those consuming lower amounts of dietary precursors would have lower levels of GDUTs. Patients attending vascular prevention clinics completed a Harvard Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and had plasma levels of TMAO, p-cresylsulfate, hippuric acid, indoxyl sulfate, p-cresyl glucuronide, phenyl acetyl glutamine, and phenyl sulfa

Dietary Micronutrient Intake of Participants in a "Partners Together in Health" Cardiac Rehabilitation Intervention.

PURPOSE: Current guidelines for cardiovascular health emphasize a "dietary pattern" approach that could be expected to increase intakes of micronutrients in addition to altering the macronutrient profile. However, the effect of interventions such as cardiac rehabilitation on the micronutrient quality of the diet has not been evaluated. Therefore, the goal of this study was to investigate changes in micronutrient intake of cardiac rehabilitation participants over time. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of data from a randomized clinical trial that assessed the effects of the Partners Toge

From Neighborhood to Genome: Three Decades of Nutrition-Related Research from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study.

For 30 years, the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) cohort study has examined the etiology and progression of atherosclerosis and atherosclerotic diseases. This research has evaluated variation in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in relation to age, race, gender, location and lifestyle factors, including diet. In this commentary, we describe ARIC research that illustrates an expanded view of the relationship between diet and health and suggest ways that future cohort studies may influence the direction of nutrition and dietetics practice.

Energy intake in short bowel syndrome: assessment by 24-h dietary recalls compared with the doubly labelled water method.

Short bowel syndrome (SBS) represents a serious intestinal absorption disorder, and patients may be prone to severe malnutrition. Dietetic therapy is critically important both for immediate prognosis and successful long-term rehabilitation. To maintain energy balance, an accurate assessment of energy intake is required. Our objective was to compare energy intake (EI) assessed by 24-h dietary recalls (EIrecall), a standard clinical assessment, with the total energy expenditure measured by the doubly labelled water (TEEdlw) method in SBS patients and matched controls. A total of twenty-two parti

Risk of Osteoporosis and Anemia in Plant-Based Diets: A Systematic Review of Nutritional Deficiencies and Clinical Implications.

The global shift toward plant-based diets is accelerating, driven by growing awareness of health, environmental, and ethical concerns. While these diets are linked to reduced risks of chronic diseases, emerging evidence highlights potential nutritional deficiencies, particularly in calcium, iron, and vitamin B12, that may compromise bone and hematologic health. This systematic review investigates the relationship between strict plant-based dietary practices and the risks of anemia and osteoporosis. Following PRISMA guidelines, we conducted a comprehensive search across four databases PubMed, S

Diet and Nutrition Status of Mongolian Adults.

(1) Background: Aspects of the Mongolian food supply, including high availability of animal-source foods and few plant foods, are plausibly associated with disease in the population. Data on Mongolian diets are lacking, and these risks are poorly quantified. The purpose of this study was to provide a multifaceted nutritional analysis of the modern Mongolian diet. (2) Methods: The study population consisted of 167 male and 167 female healthy non-pregnant urban and nomadic adults (22-55 years) randomly selected from lists of residents in 8 regions. From 2011-2016, 3-day weighed diet records and

Are We Still Mediterranean? Dietary Quality and Adherence in Sicilian Women Undergoing ART: A Prospective Observational Cohort Study.

Background and Objectives: The Mediterranean diet is traditionally linked to metabolic balance and improved reproductive health. However, dietary patterns in Mediterranean regions have progressively shifted toward more Westernized models, particularly among women of reproductive age, raising concerns about declining adherence to this historically protective diet. Objective: To assess adherence to the Mediterranean diet among women undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART) and to explore possible associations with ovarian response and clinical outcomes. Materials and Methods: This prosp

Relationship between dietary-induced changes in intestinal commensal microflora and duodenojejunal myoelectric activity monitored by radiotelemetry in the rat in vivo.

Interdigestive intestinal motility, and especially phase III of the migrating myoelectric/motor complex (MMC), is responsible for intestinal clearance and plays an important role in prevention of bacterial overgrowth and translocation in the gut. Yet previous results from gnotobiotic rats have shown that intestinal microflora can themselves affect the characteristics of the myoelectric activity of the gut during the interdigestive state. Given that the composition of the intestinal microflora can be altered by dietary manipulations, we investigated the effect of supplementation of the diet wit

Risk of uterine leiomyoma based on BET1L rs2280543 single nucleotide polymorphism and vegetarian diet.

BACKGROUND: Bet1 Golgi vesicular membrane trafficking protein-like (BET1L) rs2280543 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and diet have been independently associated with uterine leiomyoma (UL). However, whether the SNP and diet could jointly influence the risk of UL is yet to be assessed. Therefore, we investigated the independent and interactive effects of vegetarian diet and BET1L rs2280543 on uterine fibroids in Taiwanese women. METHODS: We linked participants' electronic data in the Taiwan Biobank (TWB) database to their medical records in the National Health Insurance Research Database
