Interest of diffusion-weighted echo-planar MR imaging and apparent diffusion coefficient mapping in gynecological malignancies: a review.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains the standard modality for the local staging of gynecological malignancies but it has several limitations, particularly for lymph node staging or evaluating peritoneal carcinomatosis. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in functional imaging modalities. Based on molecular diffusion, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is a unique, noninvasive modality that provides excellent tissue contrast and was shown to improve the radiological diagnosis of malignant tumors. Using quantitative apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) measurement of DWI provides

An integrated diffusion map for the analysis of diffusion properties: a feasibility study in patients with acoustic neuroma.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To develop an integrated diffusion map (iDM) for evaluation of diffusion properties, including the mean diffusivity and diffusion anisotropy concurrently. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The proposed integrated diffusion map consisted of trace and the deviation tensor. It measures the diffusion distributions from a region of interest. Diffusion tensor imaging was acquired from nine healthy volunteers and four patients with acoustic neuroma before and 3 months after the stereotactic radiosurgery. Five regions of interest were selected from healthy subjects and the whole tumor

Usefulness of diffusion-weighted imaging and the apparent diffusion coefficient in the assessment of head and neck tumors.

The aim of this review was to determine the usefulness of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) in the assessment of head and neck tumors. DWI and the ADC can help in the differential diagnosis of particular disorders (such as carcinomas vs lymphomas, or necrosis vs abscess) of the head and neck. The ADC can also provide further information to help differentiate benign from malignant tumors, as ADC values are usually lower in cases of malignancy. However, the ADC is itself influenced by various complex factors such as the cellularity and matrix of tumors

Quantitative assessment of diffusion abnormalities in benign and malignant vertebral compression fractures by line scan diffusion-weighted imaging.

OBJECTIVE: Acute vertebral collapse is common, and it is sometimes difficult to determine whether the cause is benign or malignant. Recently, diffusion-weighted imaging has been reported to be useful for differentiating the two types. The purpose of this study was to evaluate diffusion abnormalities quantitatively in benign and malignant compression fractures using line scan diffusion-weighted imaging. SUBJECTS AND METHODS. Line scan diffusion-weighted imaging was prospectively performed in 17 patients with 20 acute vertebral compression fractures caused by osteoporosis or trauma, in 12 patien

Symptomatic diffuse pulmonary meningotheliomatosis with persistent diffusing-capacity impairment.

Diffuse pulmonary meningotheliomatosis (DPM) is an ultrarare diffuse parenchymal lung disease in which pulmonary meningothelial-like nodules produce a miliary radiographic pattern. Most reported cases are asymptomatic and incidentally detected, and longitudinal physiologic data in symptomatic patients remain scarce. A 52-year-old postmenopausal never-smoker presented with three months of progressive exertional dyspnea. High-resolution computed tomography showed innumerable small bilateral nodules in a diffuse, random miliary distribution. A non-dedicated chest CT obtained approximately three m

Entropic Dynamics of Jump-Diffusion Option Pricing.

The standard models of stock-price dynamics and option valuation rest on stochastic processes postulated at the outset; here, we lay down an entropic-inference framework that derives these processes rather than assuming them, by making explicit the information each one encodes. A symmetry comes first: markets reward returns rather than price levels, which selects the logarithm of price as the dynamical variable. The price then evolves through two channels, a continuous one carrying the constraints of continuity and directionality, and a jump channel carrying the arrival rate and the first two

Generative diffusion models for spatiotemporal influenza forecasting.

Forecasting infectious disease incidence can provide important information to guide public health planning, yet it is difficult because epidemic dynamics are complex. Current mechanistic and statistical approaches often struggle to capture multimodal uncertainty or emergent trends. Influpaint adapts denoising diffusion probabilistic models to epidemic forecasting. By encoding influenza seasons as spatiotemporal images in which pixel intensity represents incidence, Influpaint learns a rich distribution of disease dynamics from a hybrid dataset of surveillance and simulated trajectories. Continuous Diffusion-Detected Neuroplasticity during Motor Learning.

How does our brain transform when we encounter a new task? To fully answer this question, comparing brain states before and after learning may not be enough, but rather an ongoing, continuous monitoring of brain changes during learning is required. While such continuous examinations of functional learning-induced changes are widely available using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), a continuous investigation of diffusion-detected brain modifications during learning is yet to be reported. Here, we continuously acquire diffusion MRI images during task performance. We then compute the m

Diffusion tensor imaging in Chediak Higashi Disease.

AIM: To define the natural history of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in Chediak-Higashi Disease (CHD) participants in relation to normative development. METHODS: Twenty-five DTI scans from 15 CHD participants were compared with 100 DTI scans from 100 neurotypical controls (NC). Comparisons were evaluated for DTI metrics including fractional anisotropy (FA), and mean, axial, and radial diffusivity (MD, AD, RD, respectively). Correlational tractography was also performed to identify group differences between CHD and NC. RESULTS: Pediatric CHD participants had DTI metrics similar to NC, however

Photopatterning-Induced Diffusion for Directed Molecular Alignment.

Photopolymerization has been emerged as a pivotal technique for spatially controlled solidification of polymer networks, owing to its compatibility with diverse patterning methods such as photomask lithography and digital light projection. While spatial confinement of polymerization enables the fabrication of microscale structures, it inherently induces concentration gradients of unreacted monomers between exposed and unexposed regions, leading to inevitable diffusion phenomena. This diffusion not only causes swelling of the polymer network and blurring of patterned edges but also acts as a dr

Wearable continuous diffusion-based skin gas analysis.

Biophysical signals such as motion and optically acquired hemodynamics represent foundational sensing modalities for wearables. Expansion of this toolset is vital for the progression of digital medicine. Current efforts utilize biofluids such as sweat and interstitial fluid with primarily adhesively mounted sensors that are fundamentally limited by epidermal turnover. A class of potential biomarkers that is largely unexplored are gaseous emissions from the body. In this work, we introduce an approach to capture emission of gas from the skin with a leaky cavity designed to allow for diffusion-b

Asymmetric rotations slow down diffusion under confinement.

Translation and rotation are the two most fundamental forms of diffusion, yet their coupling mechanism is not clear, especially under confinement. Here, we provided evidence of the coupling between rotation and translation using a substituted benzene molecule as an example. A counterintuitive behavior was observed where the movement of the smaller molecule with an asymmetric shape was unexpectedly slower than the larger one with a symmetric shape in confined channels of zeolite. We showed that this diffusion behavior was caused by the presence of the specific and selective interaction of the a

Dynamic parallel transmit diffusion MRI at 7T.

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) is inherently limited by SNR. Scanning at 7 T increases intrinsic SNR but 7 T MRI scans suffer from regions of signal dropout, especially in the temporal lobes and cerebellum. We applied dynamic parallel transmit (pTx) to allow whole-brain 7 T dMRI and compared with circularly polarized (CP) pulses in 6 subjects. Subject-specific 2-spoke dynamic pTx pulses were designed offline for 8 slabs covering the brain. We used vendor-provided B0 and B1+ mapping. Spokes positions were set using the Fourier difference approach, and RF coefficients optimized with a Jacobi-matrix high-f

Unresolved attachment and identity diffusion in adolescence.

This study examined the severity of unresolved attachment underlying adolescent identity diffusion. Our sample consisted of 180 inpatient adolescents aged 14 to 18 years (77% female, M age = 15.13, SD = 1.35; 23% male, M age = 14.85, SD = 1.41) and 84 age-matched non-clinical adolescents (52% female, M age = 16.14, SD = 1.21; 48% males, M age = 15.98, SD = 1.07). We used the Adult Attachment Projective Picture System (AAP) interview to assess attachment representations and the Assessment of Identity Development in Adolescence (AIDA) questionnaire to evaluate the severity of identity diffusion.

Diffusion tensor imaging in cubital tunnel syndrome.

Cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS) is the 2nd most common compressive neuropathy. To improve both diagnosis and the selection of patients for surgery, there is a pressing need to develop a reliable and objective test of ulnar nerve 'health'. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) characterises tissue microstructure and may identify differences in the normal ulnar from those affected by CuTS. The aim of this study was to compare the DTI metrics from the ulnar nerves of healthy (asymptomatic) adults and patients with CuTS awaiting surgery. DTI was acquired at 3.0 T using single-shot echo-planar imaging (55

Geographic tongue as a reaction-diffusion system.

Geographic tongue or benign migratory glossitis is a condition of an unknown cause characterized by chronic lesions that slowly migrate across the surface of the tongue. The condition's characteristic wavefronts suggest that it can be modeled as a reaction-diffusion system. Here, we present a model for geographic tongue pattern evolution using reaction-diffusion equations applied to portions of spheroids and paraboloids that approximate a tongue shape. We demonstrate that the observed patterns of geographic tongue lesions can be explained by propagating reaction-diffusion waves on these variab

Diffusion imaging in Huntington's disease: comprehensive review.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a monogenic disorder with 100% penetrance. With the advent of genetic testing in adults, disease-related, structural brain changes can be investigated from the earliest, premorbid stages of HD. While examining macrostructural change characterises global neuronal damage, investigating microstructural alterations provides information regarding brain organisation and its underlying biological properties. Diffusion MRI can be used to track the progression of microstructural anomalies in HD decades prior to clinical disease onset, providing a greater understanding of ne

Diffusion MRI in acute nervous system injury.

Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) and related techniques such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) are uniquely sensitive to the microstructure of the brain and spinal cord. In the acute aftermath of nervous system injury, for example, DWI reveals changes caused by injury that remains invisible on other MRI contrasts such as T2-weighted imaging. This ability has led to a demonstrated clinical utility in cerebral ischemia. However, despite strong promise in preclinical models and research settings, DWI has not been as readily adopted for other acute injuries such as traumatic spi
