Quantitative analysis of visually normal EEG reveals spectral power abnormalities in temporal lobe epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To compare quantitative spectral parameters of visually-normal EEG between Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (MTLE) patients and healthy controls (HC). METHOD: We enrolled 26 MTLE patients and 26 HC. From each recording we calculated total power of all frequency bands and determined alpha-theta (ATR) and alpha-delta (ADR) power ratios in different brain regions. Group-wise differences between spectral parameters were investigated (p < 0.05). To test for associations between spectral-power and cognitive status, we evaluated correlations between neuropsychological tests and quantitative

A case-control study of parental occupation, leukemia, and brain tumors in an industrial city in Taiwan.

We conducted a case-control study in an industrial city in Taiwan to determine whether parents of newly diagnosed patients who were younger than 30 years old with leukemia or brain tumors or the patients themselves were more likely to have been employed in certain occupations or industries. Job histories were collected for parents (and for subjects if they worked) on 103 newly diagnosed cases of leukemia, 74 newly diagnosed cases of brain tumors, and 417 controls matched for age and sex. All jobs since the age of 16 that the subjects held for more than 6 months, a total of approximately 4,000

Transcutaneous Nerve Stimulation Uncovers Spinal Reflex Contributions to Finger Force Coupling Patterns.

Understanding how spinal reflex pathways interact with biomechanical constraints to govern finger force control is critical for advancing neuroprosthetic design and neurorehabilitation. This study combined transcutaneous stimulation of the ulnar/median nerves with high-density electromyography (HD-EMG) and multi-digit force measurements to investigate how spinal reflex engagement (via H-reflex activation), electrode placement, and neuroanatomical variability shape finger interdependence. We evoked H-reflexes in the extrinsic finger flexors and quantified spinal excitability using H-reflex/M-wa

How does otitis media with effusion history affect spatial auditory processing and listening effort?

PURPOSE: To evaluate the impact of otitis media with effusion (OME) history on spatial auditory processing and listening effort (LE) in children with normal hearing thresholds. METHODS: Seventeen children with a history of OME, whose hearing thresholds had returned to normal (mean age 7.8 years), and 22 age-matched controls (mean age 8 years) participated in the study. Assessments included audiometric evaluations, an adaptive speech-in-noise task under spatial and non-spatial conditions, pupillometry to measure changes in pupil dilation during sentence recognition in noise, and an auditory di

Cerebral small vessel disease burden relates to cognitive decline via impaired amyloid clearance in the general population.

Our aim is to examine the interplay between cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) pathology, Alzheimer's disease (AD) related amyloid-β (Aβ) clearance, and cognition in general population. Cross-sectional structural equation modeling (SEM) was conducted to evaluate CSVD burden, cognition, and plasma Aβ42/40 ratios in 1026 participants without dementia from a prospective community-based cohort. CSVD burden was quantified using five established MRI markers, while cognition was assessed with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), verbal fluency test, and re

Keratin gene expression profiles after digit amputation in C57BL/6 vs. regenerative MRL mice imply an early regenerative keratinocyte activated-like state.

Mouse strains C57BL/6 (B6) and MRL were studied by whole mouse genome chip microarray analyses of RNA isolated from amputation sites at different times pre- and postamputation at the midsecond phalange of the middle digit. Many keratin genes were highly differentially expressed. All keratin genes were placed into three temporal response classes determined by injury/preinjury ratios. One class, containing only Krt6 and Krt16, were uniquely expressed relative to the other two classes and exhibited different temporal responses in MRL vs. B6. Immunohistochemical staining for Krt6 and Krt16 in tiss

Finger anthropometrics may not be a primary influence on the thermal responses to cooling and rewarming.

The fingers have a large surface area to volume ratio (SA:V), minimal muscle mass, and potent vasoconstrictor capacity. These qualities make the fingers prone to heat loss and freezing injuries during whole-body or local cold exposure. Anthropologists have proposed that the large inter-individual variability in human finger anthropometrics may be an ecogeographic evolutionary adaptation, where shorter and thicker digits (i.e. smaller SA:V ratio) provide a favorable adaptation for cold climate natives. We hypothesized that the SA:V ratio of a digit has an inverse relationship with finger blood

The role of sensory nerve conduction study of the palmar cutaneous nerve in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome in patients with polyneuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Conventional methods in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in patients with polyneuropathy (PNP) are insufficient. AIMS: We suggest that the comparison of the conduction of the median nerve with that of the neighboring peripheral nerves may be more beneficial in the diagnosis of entrapment neuropathy. SETTING AND DESIGN: The median nerve sensory conduction in healthy volunteers, in cases of CTS, PNP cases without CTS and in cases of PNP in whom clinical findings point to CTS, were compared by palmar cutaneous nerve (PCN) sensory conduction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Comp

Integration, heterochrony, and adaptation in pedal digits of syndactylous marsupials.

BACKGROUND: Marsupial syndactyly is a curious morphology of the foot found in all species of diprotodontian and peramelemorph marsupials. It is traditionally defined as a condition in which digits II and III of the foot are bound by skin and are reduced. Past treatments of marsupial syndactyly have not considered the implications of this unique morphology for broader issues of digit development and evolution, and the ongoing debate regarding its phylogenetic meaning lacks a broad empirical basis. This study undertakes the first interdisciplinary characterisation of syndactyly, using variance/c

Association of consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages with cognitive function among the adolescents aged 12-16 years in US, NHANES III, 1988-1994.

OBJECTIVE: As a major source of added sugar, the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) continues to increase worldwide. The adverse health effects associated with SSBs are also risk factors for cognitive development, but studies on the relationship between SSBs and adolescents' cognitive function are limited. We used data released by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) III (1988-1994) to explore the association between the consumption of SSBs and cognitive function among children and adolescents aged 12-16 years in the United States. METHODS AND PROCEDURES:

Attenuation of social class and reproductive risk factor associations for Hodgkin lymphoma due to selection bias in controls.

OBJECTIVE: Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) risk has been linked with higher social class and lower parity, but our prior population-based case-control study in adult women had unexpected null findings for these variables. Because subject participation was 87% for cases but 65% for random digit-dialing (RDD) controls, we examined representativeness of our controls and the impact of detected bias on prior results. METHODS: Using data from RDD enumeration, abbreviated interviews with nonparticipating controls, and the US census, we compared participating and nonparticipating RDD controls across several ag

The association between 2D:4D ratios and sociosexuality: a failure to replicate.

Researchers investigating the role of biological factors in the development and maintenance of interest in uncommitted sexual activity (i.e., sociosexuality) have reported that greater prenatal androgen action in women, as inferred by the ratio of the 2nd to 4th digit, is associated with greater interest in uncommitted sexual relationships, as measured by scores on the Sociosexuality Orientation Inventory (SOI) (Clark, 2004). This evidence suggesting a rather extensive role for prenatal factors in human mating behavior has been cited over 20 times in the literature. However, despite this indic

Exploring the Predictive Value of 2D:4D Ratio in Cardiovascular Diseases and Metabolic Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: The second-to-fourth digit (2D:4D) ratio, considered a proxy for prenatal androgen exposure, has been proposed as a potential biomarker for various adult health conditions, including metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, evidence supporting this association remains inconsistent. This systematic review aimed to synthesize current findings on the association between 2D:4D ratios and risk factors for MetS and CVD. METHODS: Nine peer-reviewed studies published between 2006 and 2025 were included, selected based on predefined PICOS criteria. Study popula

Similarities and differences in working memory and neurometabolism of obsessive-compulsive disorder and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) both showed cognitive impairment, and the altered neurometabolic may associate with cognitive impairment. However, there are limited comparative working memory (WM) and neuroimaging studies on these two disorders. Therefore, we investigated the characteristics of WM and neurometabolic changes in patients with OCD and MDD. METHODS: A total of 64 unmedicated patients (32 OCD and 32 MDD), and 33 healthy controls (HC) were included to conduct WM assessment comprising Digit Span Test (DST), 2-back task and Stroop C
