Several young bulls in a beef farm showed large, foul-smelling skin lesions in the plantar region of the coronary band and in the interdigital space. Inflammation is a complex cellular and humoral response against trauma and infection, and its presence leads to destruction of tissue in humans. The mechanisms that initiate inflammatory diseases remain largely unknown because of complex interactions between multiple genetic and environmental factors during pathogenesis. Animal models for human diseases offer dissection of complex pathogenesis by inbred genetic backgrounds and controlled circumstances. BACKGROUND: Cleansing is an important hygiene activity, necessary to prevent bacterial, fungal, yeast, and viral infection. However, in the presence of skin disease, cleansing can take on a new challenge: removing the sebum, sweat, externally applied substances, environmental debris, and organisms from the face without damaging the skin barrier. Since cleansers cannot easily distinguish between sebum and the intercellular lipids required to maintain skin integrity, unique cleansing technologies are necessary to provide mild cleansing for the many manifestations of sensitive skin.
