Unconscious stereotypes: An investigation into public attitudes toward disabled groups.

BACKGROUND: China has a large population of individuals with physical disabilities and mental disorders. The public's implicit stereotypes of these groups are significant factors influencing their daily lives, social integration, and mental health. The intergroup contact theory implies that the public may have positive implicit stereotypes of physically disabled groups and negative implicit stereotypes of individuals with mental disorders. In contrast, the theory of intergroup discrimination and ingroup favoritism implies that the public may have opposite implicit stereotypes of these two grou

Perceived discrimination and migraine-specific quality of life: A cross-sectional survey study in a Black/African American sample.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations between perceived lifetime discrimination and discrimination in medical settings with migraine-specific quality of life in Black/African Americans with migraine. BACKGROUND: Perceived discrimination negatively impacts health outcomes and quality of life, particularly in minoritized populations. African Americans with migraine disease face compounded challenges due to limited access to specialized treatments and discrimination in medical settings, leading to disparities in migraine care and outcomes. However, few studies have investigated how perceived di

Plasma Glutamine and Glutamate in Relation to Clinical Outcomes After Ischemic Stroke: A Multicenter Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Glutamine (Gln) and glutamate (Glu) have been suggested to play a pivotal role in neuronal homeostasis and metabolic regulation, showing potential as prognostic biomarkers for stroke. This study aimed to evaluate the associations of plasma Gln, Glu, and glutamine-to-glutamate ratio (GGR) with adverse clinical outcomes in patients with ischemic stroke. METHODS: This secondary analysis of the multicenter CATIS (China Antihypertensive Trial in Acute Ischemic Stroke) included 3499 participants with ischemic stroke. Plasma Gln and Glu levels were measured within 24 hours of hospital ad

Peripheral Blood MCEMP1 Gene Expression as a Biomarker for Stroke Prognosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: A limitation when making early decisions on stroke management is the lack of rapid diagnostic and prognostic testing. Our study sought to identify peripheral blood RNA biomarkers associated with stroke. The secondary aims were to assess the discriminative capacity of RNA biomarkers for primary stroke type and stroke prognosis at 1-month. METHODS: Whole-blood gene expression profiling was conducted on the discovery cohort: 129 first-time stroke cases that had blood sampling within 5 days of symptom onset and 170 control participants with no history of stroke. RESULTS:

Observational learning and the formation of classes of reading skills by individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.

We investigated whether individuals with developmental disabilities will demonstrate stimulus classes after observing another individual demonstrate the prerequisite conditional discriminations. In Experiment 1, participants learned conditional discriminations among dictated words, pictures, and printed words. They also observed a model without disabilities demonstrate conditional discriminations among a different set of dictated words, pictures, and printed words. The classes assigned to each participant belonged to a larger superordinate category, as did the classes assigned to each model. T

Self-worth and life meaning: the perceived narrative frames on the identity of people with disabilities.

This study investigated the narrative frames of disability and their associations with disability identity in the context of China. Specifically, it explored the sense of Self-worth, Life Meaning, Perceived Discrimination, and Disability Denial in people with disabilities and the complex relationships between media narratives, impairment, and social constraints. Through framing analysis, this study found three tragedy narrative frames (traditional, medical, and charity) and three non-tragedy frames (inspirational, relationship, and rights) from the traditional media and social media. Hamstring strength and hip mobility associated with pain and disability in lumbar instability.

Chronic low back pain (LBP) has been hypothesized to involve lumbar instability, yet the roles of hamstring strength and hip mobility remain underexplored. While earlier studies focused on hamstring tightness, this study examined how these factors are strongly associated with pain and disability in young adults with lumbar instability. A case-control study was conducted on 129 participants (67 symptomatic, 62 asymptomatic) aged 18-35 years. Hamstring strength was assessed using the NordBord dynamometer, while hip mobility was measured using a goniometer. Pain intensity and disability were eval

The association of muscle weakness with functional disability in older patients with Diabetes mellitus: Measured by three different grip strength thresholds.

The association of muscle weakness with poor outcomes is well defined in general older population, but there is insufficient data on the association of muscle weakness with functionality in older patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). We aimed to investigate the predictivity of muscle weakness defined as low grip strength thresholds determined by EWGSOP2, and two regional thresholds in older patients with DM for functional disability. Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental ADL (IADL), grip strength, comorbidities, anthropometric and biochemical data from outpatient clinic medical record

Effects of stimulus presentation order during auditory-visual conditional discrimination training for children with autism spectrum disorder.

Children with autism spectrum disorder are typically taught conditional discriminations using a match-to-sample arrangement. Consideration should be given to the temporal order in which antecedent stimuli (the sample and comparison stimuli) are presented during match-to-sample trials, as various arrangements have been used in the extant literature. The purpose of the current study was to compare the effects of four stimulus presentation orders on the acquisition of auditory-visual conditional discriminations. The study included participants from a clinically relevant population (three children

Racial Discrimination and Race-Based Biases on Orthopedic-Related Outcomes: An Integrative Review.

Musculoskeletal diseases often lead to functional limitations and debility. The burden of these debilitating diseases is not balanced across race and ethnicity. The Institute of Medicine (now referred to as the National Academy of Medicine) identified racial discrimination as a substantive cause of race-based health disparities for racial and ethnic minority groups. The purpose of this integrative review is to summarize the evidence on the relationship among racial discrimination, race-based implicit biases and other types of biases (e.g., gender and appearance), and orthopaedic-related outcom

Hidden Bias: Social Service Professionals' Attitudes toward Physical Disability.

Implicit social cognition, also known as implicit bias, may impact social work practice. Because social workers commonly work with people with disabilities, it is important to understand more about social service professionals' attitudes about physical disability. By using descriptive and inferential statistical tests to quantitatively analyze secondary 2023 data from social service professionals, including social workers and counselors (n = 5,167), this study found that 70.3 percent of respondents reported having no explicit preference for people with or without physical disabilities, 23.7 pe

Exploring the social factors influencing the sense of belonging among medical students with disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Medical universities have become more aware of disability inclusion, and have begun taking cognizance of the importance of a supportive environment for students with disabilities. Faculty members can mitigate challenges to legitimacy and belonging by creating safe learning environments built on openness, humility, and actively valuing each learner. However, the factors contributing to these students' sense of belonging in medical university settings remain under-explored. To address this issue, the present study examines social factors influencing the sense of belonging for medic
