Pharmacogenomic Studies in Intellectual Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often receive psychotropic medications such as antipsychotics and antidepressants to treat aberrant behaviors and mood symptoms, frequently resulting in polypharmacy and drug-related adverse effects. Pharmacogenomic (PGx) studies with ASD and/or ID (ASD/ID) have been scarce despite the promise of optimizing treatment outcomes. We reviewed the literature on PGx studies with antipsychotics and antidepressants (e.g., treatment response and adverse effects) in ASD/ID. METHODS: We performed a systematic re

Forgotten, excluded or included? Students with disabilities: A case study at the University of Mauritius.

BACKGROUND: Students with disabilities in the tertiary education sector are more than a just a phenomenon, they are a reality. In general, little attention is devoted to their needs despite the fact that they need more care and attention. OBJECTIVES: This paper, through a case study at the University of Mauritius, sought to answer some pertinent questions regarding students with disabilities. Does the University of Mauritius have sufficient facilities to support these students? Are students aware of existing facilities? What additional structures need to be put in place so that students with

Sex Trafficking of Girls With Intellectual Disabilities: An Exploratory Mixed Methods Study.

Few researchers have examined sex trafficking of girls with intellectual disabilities (IDs). Drawing from 54 juvenile sex trafficking (JST) cases, this exploratory, mixed methods study compared 15 JST cases involving girls with ID with 39 JST cases involving girls without ID. Findings revealed a disproportionate risk for exploitation in JST for girls with ID, endangering circumstances creating vulnerability among this population, as well as the perpetrator-victim dynamics that complicate prevention and intervention. Complicating dynamics included victim lack of awareness of exploitation and it

A feasibility study of behavioural activation for depressive symptoms in adults with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Important work has been carried out adapting cognitive behavioural therapy for people with intellectual disabilities. However, there is a lack of alternative psychological therapies available for people with intellectual disabilities and emotional difficulties. Behavioural activation for depression is less reliant on verbal communication and focuses on increasing purposeful activity and reducing avoidance. METHOD: This feasibility study involved the development and piloting of an adapted manual of behavioural activation for people with intellectual disabilities. The intervention c

An fMRI study of multimodal semantic and phonological processing in reading disabled adolescents.

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated multimodal (visual and auditory) semantic and unimodal (visual only) phonological processing in reading disabled (RD) adolescents and non-impaired (NI) control participants. We found reduced activation for RD relative to NI in a number of left-hemisphere reading-related areas across all processing tasks regardless of task type (semantic vs. phonological) or modality (auditory vs. visual modality). Moreover, activation differences in these regions, which included the inferior frontal gyrus, the superior temporal gyrus, and the occipit

Occupational disability caused by dizziness and vertigo: a register-based prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Despite the magnitude of dizziness/vertigo in primary health care, prospective studies are scarce, and few studies have focused on vocational consequences. Using the International Classification of Primary Health Care (ICPC), GPs have two alternative diagnoses, H82 (vertiginous syndrome) and N17 (vertigo/dizziness), when issuing sickness certificates to these patients. AIM: To assess the incidence of dizziness/vertigo in long-term sickness absence and to identify sociodemographic and diagnostic predictors for transition into disability pension. Autism in adults with severe intellectual disability: an empirical study of symptom presentation.

BACKGROUND: Autism is one of the most intriguing and highly studied conditions in the field of mental health. However, most research has been carried out with young children to the exclusion of adults, particularly adults with intellectual disability (ID). The present study represents a first attempt to describe symptom patterns of autism for adults with severe ID. METHOD: Fifty-seven adults with ID who met DSM-IV-TR and ICD-10 diagnostic criteria for autism were compared to 57 matched controls with ID only (no Axis I diagnosis). RESULTS: Marked differences were noted in a range of symptoms,

Occupational burnout as a predictor of disability pension: a population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to investigate whether burnout predicts new disability pension at population level during a follow-up of approximately 4 years. The diagnosis for which the disability pension was granted was also examined in relation to the level of burnout. METHODS: We used a population-based cohort sample (n = 3125) of 30-60-year-old employees from an epidemiological health study, the Health 2000 Study, gathered during 2000-2001 in Finland. The data collection comprised an interview, a clinical health examination including a standardised mental health interview, and a q

Etiology of the stability of reading difficulties: the longitudinal twin study of reading disabilities.

Results obtained from previous longitudinal studies of reading difficulties indicate that reading deficits are generally stable. However, little is known about the etiology of this stability. Thus, the primary objective of this first longitudinal twin study of reading difficulties is to provide an initial assessment of genetic and environmental influences on the stability of reading deficits. Data were analyzed from a sample of 56 twin pairs, 18 identical (monozygotic, MZ) and 38 fraternal (dizygotic, DZ), in which at least one member of each pair was classified as reading-disabled in the Colo

Prevalence of sensory and cognitive disabilities and falls, and their relationships: a community-based study.

OBJECTIVE: The telomerase gene is overexpressed in the majority of tumors and cancers compared to normal and healthy cells, and on the other hand, this enzymatic protein is overactive, therefore, the telomerase enzyme is considered a primary target for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in most cancers. This has been hypothesized that Helenalin has anti-telomerase activity in a wide range of cancers and Tumor tissues. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of helenalin extract on telomerase gene expression in the T47D breast cancer cell line. METHODS: We used the MTT assay to e

Neck pain and disability following motor vehicle accidents--a cohort study.

The primary aim of the study was to compare the prevalence of neck pain and disability in a group exposed to motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) with those in the general population. The secondary aim was to assess the prevalence of a past history of exposure to an MVA with sequelae of neck pain in the general population. The exposed group consisted of 121 patients with neck complaints following an MVA in 1983. The control group, consisting of 1,491 subjects, was randomly selected, with attention to the distribution of age and gender in the exposed group. A neck-pain questionnaire was mailed to the
