After the Indian Ocean tsunami: Singapore's contribution to the international disaster victim identification effort in Thailand.

This paper describes the international disaster victim identification (DVI) response mounted in Thailand, with particular reference to Singapore's contribution to this process, in the wake of the Asian tsunami of 26 December, 2004, which devastated parts of more than 10 countries in and around the Indian Ocean and claimed more than 200,000 lives. Although Singapore was unscathed by this natural calamity, over 30 Singaporean visitors were counted amongst the thousands of deceased victims, mostly in Thailand. The systematic application of forensic pathology, forensic dentistry, DNA profiling, an

Pre-hospital response to major incidents.

Since the attacks of September 11, 2001 in the United States, and the subsequent anthrax scares, the approach to preparing for and dealing with major incidents has had to be re-thought. Major incident planning, training and preparedness, once the domain of NHS senior managers and frontline A&E staff, is now the business of all NHS nurses. This article provides the theoretical knowledge needed by nurses to operate at the scene of a pre-hospital major incident.

[Issues related to the identification process of catastrophes victims].

Catastrophes on an international scale with an increasingly pronounced terrorist factor (for example, the terrorist attacks in the United States of America on September 11, 2001) are occurring with increasing frequency. This fact compels the international forensic medical community--especially at the present moment--to undertake coordinated and rapid measures in the area, closely related to our profession, of issues connected with problems of identifying the victims of catastrophes. To date organizational issues have not been harmonized to the required at an international level degree. The sub

[Expert consensus on pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis].

Pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis, also known as immunoprophylaxis before exposure to rabies, refers to preventive rabies vaccination for individuals at risk of rabies infection before rabies exposure, which is one of the important strategies for rabies prevention. Pre-exposure rabies prophylaxis can reduce the risk of individual rabies and reduce the cost of post-exposure prophylaxis by establishing an immunologic barrier in advance and the memory immune response after the booster. In view of the current situation that clinicians in China have relatively insufficient knowledge of pre-exposure r

Cholera Outbreaks in Zimbabwe: An In-Depth Analysis of Drivers, Constraints and Reimagining the Use of Medicinal Plants.

Cholera, an intestinal infection caused by Vibrio cholerae, poses a severe threat to public health, particularly in developing countries. This narrative review discusses drivers for cholera outbreaks, challenges and viable alternatives, in Zimbabwe. A literature search was conducted using electronic databases notably ScienceDirect, Google Scholar and PubMed, as well as thesis and conference papers. Evidence indicates that the epidemiology, as well as risk factors, includes (1) extreme droughts; (2) political meddling in health issues and water supply; (3) natural disasters; (4) migration; (5)

Post-marketing surveillance of anti-malarial medicines used in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: The growing concern over the extent of anti-malarial medicine resistance in sub-Saharan Africa, driven largely by administration of sub-therapeutic doses derived from falsified and substandard medicines necessitates regular monitoring of the quality of these medicines to avert any potential public health disaster. This study aimed at determining the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) content of anti-malarial medicines available in Malawi with respect to the manufacturers' label claim and pharmacopoeia specifications. METHODS: Samples of anti-malarial medicines (112) collected

New software for computer-assisted dental-data matching in Disaster Victim Identification and long-term missing persons investigations: "DAVID Web".

In 1997 an internally supported but unfunded pilot project at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) Australia led to the development of a computer system which closely mimicked Interpol paperwork for the storage, later retrieval and tentative matching of the many AM and PM dental records that are often needed for rapid Disaster Victim Identification. The program was called "DAVID" (Disaster And Victim IDentification). It combined the skills of the VIFM Information Technology systems manager (VW), an experienced odontologist (JGC) and an expert database designer (JC); all current

Establishing a high level of knowledge regarding bioterrorist threats in emergency department physicians: methodology and the results of a national bio-preparedness project.

INTRODUCTION: Medical systems worldwide are facing the new threat of morbidity associated with the deliberate dispersal of microbiological agents by terrorists. Rapid diagnosis and containment of this type of unannounced attack is based on the knowledge and capabilities of medical staff. In 2004, the knowledge of emergency department physicians of anthrax was tested. The average test score was 58%. Consequently, a national project on bioterrorism preparedness was developed. The aim of this article is to present the project in which medical knowledge was enhanced regarding a variety of bioterro

Characterization of Interventional Studies of the Cholera Epidemic in Haiti.

In October 2010, the Haitian Ministry of Public Health and Population (MSPP; Port au Prince, Haiti) reported a cholera epidemic caused by contamination of the Artibonite River by a United Nation Stabilization Mission camp. Interventional studies of the subsequent responses, including a descriptive Methods section and systematic approach, may be useful in facilitating comparisons and applying lessons learned to future outbreaks. The purpose of this study was to examine publicly available documents relating to the 2010 cholera outbreak to answer: (1) What information is publicly available on int

Possible asphyxiation from carbon dioxide of a cross-country skier in eastern California: a deadly volcanic hazard.

This report describes an incident in which exceedingly high levels of carbon dioxide may have contributed to the death of a skier in eastern California. A cross-country skier was found dead inside a large, mostly covered snow cave, 1 day after he was reported missing. The autopsy report suggests that the skier died of acute pulmonary edema consistent with asphyxiation; carbon dioxide measurements inside the hole in which he was found reached 70%. This area is known for having a high carbon dioxide flux attributed to degassing of a large body of magma (molten rock) 10 to 20 km beneath the ski a

[Drowning--near drowning].

In Norway the number of deaths per year from drowning is approximately nine persons per 100,000, most of them men between 25 and 40 years of age. About 60% of these persons can swim, and 50% of the deaths are related to intake of alcohol. About 6% of the drowned are children, most of them boys. In disaster medicine, drowning is associated with accidents at sea, involving large vessels or small boats, or connected to offshore activities. The important pathological events are directly related to asphyxia, hypoxemia, hypercarbia, pulmonary oedema, and circulatory arrest. This paper describes vari

Psychophysiologic aftereffects of prenatal irradiation.

Prenatally irradiated children (n = 544), who were born between 26 April 1986 and 26 February 1987, in regions of the Ukraine which were radioactively contaminated as a result of the Chernobyl disaster, their mothers and teachers have been examined with psychometric tests. The control group of relevant children (n = 759), their mothers and teachers, were living at the radioecological 'clear' regions (Kharkov and Kharkov Region). Further, we randomly selected 50 prenatally irradiated children whose mothers were evacuated from the Chernobyl exclusion zone and 50 age-and-gender-matched non-expose

Primary care for the urban poor in India during the pandemic: Uninterrupted management of non-communicable diseases and home-based care of patients with COVID-19 infection.

PROBLEM: The two waves of COVID-19 severely affected the healthcare system in India. The government responded to the first wave with a strict nationwide lockdown which disrupted primary care, including the management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The second wave overwhelmed healthcare facilities leading to inadequate access to hospital services. Collectively, these issues required urgent responses, including the adaptation of primary care. APPROACH: The Low-Cost Effective Care Unit (LCECU) of Christian Medical College, Vellore (CMC) has a network of community volunteers, community heal
