Natural hazards: causes and effects. Lesson 5--Tropical cyclones (hurricanes, typhoons, baguios, cordonazos, tainos).

The many conclusions drawn and lessons learned from past cyclones can be used to mitigate and better respond to future occurrences. Some of the most helpful are listed below: 1) Outbreaks of cholera do not follow cyclones. Cholera must be endemic previously to a community; 2) Waterborne diseases do not increase as a result of cyclones; 3) Massive food aid rarely is required after a cyclone; 4) Used clothing almost never is needed. It usually is culturally inappropriate. Though accepted by disaster victims, it almost never is worn; 5) Blankets can be useful, but if they are needed, they usually

Gastrointestinal symptoms and food/nutrition concerns after the great East Japan earthquake in March 2011: survey of evacuees in a temporary shelter.

On March 11, 2011, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of northern Japan. A resulting tsunami struck the Japan Pacific coast, causing >20,000 deaths, injuries and missing persons. Survivors' post-tsunami health and nutritional status were surveyed one month after the disaster in a school shelter in Ishinomaki City. Hyogo College of Medicine's disaster relief team observations and survivors' questionnaires were used to assess the disaster's effects on survivors' lifestyles and gastrointestinal symptoms while residing in temporary shelters. Of 236 disas

Relaying support in disaster-affected areas: the social implications of a 'pay-it-forward' network.

When a disaster strikes a country, a temporary so-called post-disaster utopia emerges in which local residents help each other and outsiders support survivors and victims. However, this utopia does not last. Survivors are likely to have no chance to pay people back for the help they have received and thus return to their daily lives with a sense of debt. After the Great East Japan Earthquake the author motivated survivors of other disasters to help survivors in the Tohoku region in eastern Japan in return for the support they had received in the past. Two findings are revealed: firstly, this p

[Disaster medical response concerns us all].

The flood disaster in the region of the Oder and Elbe Rivers or the disaster in Eschede, Kaprun, or Ramstein make us aware that disasters not only occur in distant regions of the world but also in our latitudes. They do not follow any rules; no one can predict the location, time, or type of a disaster. However, this lack of concrete predictability should not lead to our being unprepared to respond to catastrophic events. Detailed examination and analysis of medical and organizational activities involved in past disasters reveal that these types of incidents always entail similar medical and lo

Natural disasters and nontuberculous mycobacteria: a recipe for increased disease?

Infectious diseases acquired by survivors of large-scale natural disasters complicate the recovery process. During events such as tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornados and well into the recovery period, victims often are exposed to water-soil mixtures that have relocated with indigenous microbes. Because nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous in water and soil, there is potential for increased exposure to these organisms during natural disasters. In this hypothesis-driven commentary, we discuss the rise in NTM lung disease and natural disasters and examine the geographic ov

Forensic Analysis and Identification Processes in Mass Disasters: Explosion of Gun Powder in the Fireworks Factory.

A mass disaster is a situation that involves criticality between the number of victims and resources, in terms of both men and means, present on the site of an event that is mostly unexpected and sudden. In the multidisciplinary teams that intervene, the role of forensic pathologists, who are responsible for the direction and coordination of post-mortem operations, is central, and must remain so. The authors report the case of an explosion of a pyrotechnic artifice factory, as a result of which numerous victims and injuries are recorded. So, the team completed the autopsies and created a proto

Health services responses to disasters in Mumbai sharing experiences.

In mass disaster situations, demands frequently exceed the capacity of personnel and facilities. In the last few years, there has been an increased incidence of civil disasters; the spectrum of possible catastrophes has also dramatically increased as a result of an increasingly technologically sophisticated society. During the last 15 years, varied terrorist activities have become increasingly common as expressions of the opinions of extreme political groups, especially in India. In Mumbai itself, we have witnessed disasters such as widespread riots, terrorist bomb blasts, floods, and fires. T

Decision support system for resource allocation in disaster management.

Natural and man-made disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, plane crashes, high-rise building collapses, major nuclear facility malfunctions, pose an ever-present challenge to public emergency services. Disasters may result in a large volume of responders arriving on-scene to provide assistance to victims. Coordination of responding resources is a major problem in disasters. In this paper we introduce a decision support framework built on rapid information collection and resource tracking functionalities. Based on this information collected from emergency response service agencies, operation

Emerging medical therapies in crush syndrome - progress report from basic sciences and potential future avenues.

Crush injury is a disease that is commonly found in victims of earthquakes, debris flows, mine disasters, explosions, terrorist attacks, local wars, and other accidents. The complications that arise due to the crush injury inflicted on victims give rise to crush syndrome (CS). If not treated in time, the mortality rate of CS is very high. The most important measure that can be taken to reduce mortality in such situations is to immediately start treatment. However, the traditional treatment methods such as fluid resuscitation, diuresis, and hemodialysis are not feasible enough to be carried out

Establishment of a post-disaster healthcare information booklet for the Turkey-Syrian earthquake, based on past disasters.

The scientific evidence based on experiences with past disasters points to the possibility of the occurrence of future mental health issues among those who were affected by the recent Turkey-Syria earthquake. However, post-disaster care information on factors that could give rise to mental health issues among those affected have yet to be provided. In March 2011, Tohoku University compiled and published a booklet with post-disaster healthcare information based on the experiences with the Great East Japan Earthquake. This study aimed to promote the introduction and use of this booklet for post-

A dataset from ten disasters for studying location descriptions and training AI models.

People have been increasingly using social media to post messages during a natural disaster, and describe the locations of victims, damages, difficult situations, and relief resources. Many of these location descriptions are in the forms of detailed and multi-entity descriptions, such as door number addresses, road intersections, and highway exits. Currently, there is limited availability of datasets that contain these detailed location descriptions labeled in disaster-related messages. A lack of these datasets hinders the understanding of how people describe locations during disasters and the

[A Qualitative Analysis of Mobile Pharmacies as Disaster Measure and Pharmacists' Mental Health during Disaster Support: The 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake].

The use of medical supply vehicles (mobile pharmacies) as a disaster measure developed after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011 when a massive tsunami destroyed the medicine supply system. In the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, mobile pharmacies were dispatched from Oita, Wakayama, and Hiroshima and contributed to medical treatment in the disaster area. In this study, we conducted an interview to structure the mental conflicts of the pharmacists supporting the disaster victims by means of the mobile pharmacies, a novel medical support tool. We conducted a semi-structured interview of 21 pharmac

The Role of Social Determinants in Mental Health and Resilience After Disasters: Implications for Public Health Policy and Practice.

In this general literature review, we will explore the impacts and contribution of social determinants to mental health and resiliency following both natural and man-made disasters. Natural disasters, such as wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes, as well as man-made disasters, such as civil wars, have been known to inflict significant damage to the mental health of the victims. In this paper, we mainly explore some most studied vulnerability and protective social determinant factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, socials support and socioeconomic status for the mental health and r
