Is disgust more resistant to extinction than fear? A meta-analytic review of laboratory paradigms.

Disgust can be acquired via evaluative conditioning; a process by which a neutral stimulus (conditioned stimulus; CS) comes to be evaluated as disgusting due to its pairing with an inherently disgusting stimulus (unconditioned stimulus; US). Research has shown that conditioned disgust responses are resistant to extinction which may have implications for disorders (i.e., contamination-based obsessive-compulsive disorder, specific phobias, and post-traumatic stress disorder) in which heightened disgust has been implicated. Importantly, extinction is the primary mechanism by which exposure therap

Decoding Emotion in Drug Abusers: Evidence for Face and Body Emotion Recognition and for Disgust Emotion.

Background: Different drugs damage the frontal cortices, particularly the prefrontal areas involved in both emotional and cognitive functions, with a consequence of decoding emotion deficits for people with substance abuse. The present study aimed to explore the cognitive impairments in drug abusers through facial, body and disgust emotion recognition, expanding the investigation of emotions processing, measuring accuracy and response velocity. Methods: We enrolled 13 addicted to cocaine and 12 alcohol patients attending treatment services in Italy, comparing them with 33 matched controls. Fac

Neural underpinnings of perception and experience of disgust in individuals with a reduced sense of smell: An fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with reduced olfactory function (anosmia, hyposmia) have reported changes in disgust perception and disgust experience compared to normosmic controls. The current functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study investigated the neural underpinnings of the altered disgust processing. METHOD: Twenty-four patients with anosmia or hyposmia and 26 normosmic controls were presented with images depicting facial expressions and scenes from the categories disgust and neutral. The disgusting scenes depicted stimuli that typically smell repulsive (spoiled food, excrements). Br

Incompleteness, harm avoidance, and disgust: A comparison of youth with OCD, anxiety disorders, and no psychiatric disorder.

Psychological models of pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) place a heavy emphasis on harm avoidance as a maintaining factor and target for treatment. Incompleteness and disgust may also play a role in pediatric OCD but remain understudied. Youth with OCD (n = 100), anxiety disorders (n = 96), and no impairing psychiatric symptoms (n = 25) completed self-report measures of trait-level incompleteness, harm avoidance, and disgust and current symptoms of OCD, anxiety, and depression. Group differences and associations between emotions, symptoms, and pre- to post-treatment change in over

The source effect as a natural function of disgust in interpersonal context and its impairment in mental disorders.

Disgust affects interpersonal relationships and regulates hygienic, sexual and distance behaviour. Its intensity in the interpersonal context depends on the character of the relationship. Strangers normally evoke more disgust than intimates (known as the source effect). General disgust sensitivity is increased in various mental diseases. It is unclear how disgust in the interpersonal context is affected and whether the source effect is preserved. 460 inpatients with mental disorders and 463 healthy subjects answered a newly developed Questionnaire (DIRQ) that covers disgust in the interpersona

Disgust, impulsivity and depressive dimensions in subjects at risk for bulimia nervosa and/or binge eating disorder.

PURPOSE: the study aims to assess the depressive symptoms, the disgust feeling and the impulsivity index in subjects showing a high risk of binge eating disorder (BED) and/or bulimia nervosa (BN) through a cross-sectional study of 150 participants. RESULTS: There was no significant difference regarding age, sex, employment and marital status between subjects at high risk for BED/BN (Group A) and controls (Group B). However, participants in group A presented higher scores of depressions (p = 0.021), impulsivity (p = 0.027) and Disgust (p = 0.030) with significant associations. CONCLUSION: The

Identification and intensity of disgust: Distinguishing visual, linguistic and facial expressions processing in Parkinson disease.

OBJECTIVES & METHODS: Most of the studies since now show an impairment for facial displays of disgust recognition in Parkinson disease. A general impairment in disgust processing in patients with Parkinson disease might adversely affect their social interactions, given the relevance of this emotion for human relations. However, despite the importance of faces, disgust is also expressed through other format of visual stimuli such as sentences and visual images. The aim of our study was to explore disgust processing in a sample of patients affected by Parkinson disease, by means of various tests

Testing the disgust conditioning theory of food-avoidance in adolescents with recent onset anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa is characterized by chronic food avoidance that is resistant to change. Disgust conditioning offers one potential unexplored mechanism for explaining this behavioral disturbance because of its specific role in facilitating food avoidance in adaptive situations. A food based reversal learning paradigm was used to study response flexibility in 14 adolescent females with restricting subtype anorexia nervosa (AN-R) and 15 healthy control (HC) participants. Expectancy ratings were coded as a behavioral measure of flexibility and electromyography recordings from the levator labii (d

Disgust and behavioral avoidance in colorectal cancer screening and treatment: a systematic review and research agenda.

BACKGROUND: The emotion of disgust appears to promote psychological and behavioral avoidance, a dynamic that has significant implications in physical and psychological outcomes in colorectal cancer (CRC). Patients, caregivers, and health professionals alike are all potentially susceptible to responding with disgust and the associated avoidance. OBJECTIVE: This article aimed to review the early-stage literature related to disgust and CRC, consider the clinical implications, and suggest an appropriate research agenda. METHODS: Given limited research in this area, a systematic review of the lit

An experimental analysis of disgust sensitivity and fear of contagion in Spider and Blood Injection Injury Phobia.

Disgust sensitivity and concern with contamination have been frequently associated with Spider and Blood-Injection-Injury (BII) Phobias. This study assessed the domain specificity of disgust sensitivity and concern with contamination in 29 Non-Phobic Controls, 25 clinical Spider Phobics, 26 clinical BII Phobics, and 27 persons who met clinical criteria for Spider Phobia and BII Phobia. On self-report measures we found evidence of domain specificity of disgust sensitivity for the Spider and BII Phobia groups. Furthermore, we found that persons with both phobias may be more disgust sensitive tha

The association between health anxiety and disgust reactions in a contamination-based behavioral approach task.

Existing evidence suggests that disgust is an important affective process related to health anxiety. The present study sought to determine the contribution of health anxiety symptoms in the prediction of disgust and behavioral avoidance in a large, nonclinical sample (N=156). Regression analyses showed that overall health anxiety symptoms predicted disgust on a behavioral approach task independent of gender, negative affect, and fear of contamination. Particularly, health anxiety-related reassurance seeking was found to be uniquely associated with disgust and behavioral avoidance after control

The moderating effects of contamination sensitivity on state affect and information processing: examination of disgust specificity.

Although contamination sensitivity has been implicated in several disorders, there is a paucity of research examining the influence of this trait on various outcomes. Accordingly, the present study examined the extent to which individual differences in contamination sensitivity moderated state affect in response to a mood induction and subsequent information processing biases, as assessed by a lexical decision task (LDT). It was hypothesised that the moderating effects of contamination sensitivity would be specific to disgust responding to a negative but not positive mood induction, and to rea

A dirty animal is a scary animal! Effects of disgust-related information on fear beliefs in children.

The present study investigated whether disgust-valenced information has an impact on children's fear beliefs about animals. Non-clinical children aged between 9 and 13 years (n=159) were presented with disgust-related and cleanliness-related information about unknown animals (Australian marsupials). Before and after information, beliefs of disgust and fear regarding the animals were assessed. Results showed that disgust-related information not only induced higher levels of disgust but also increased children's fear beliefs in relation to these animals. The other way around, cleanliness-related

Disgust-reduction evaluative conditioning (DREC) and tDCS in contamination-based OCD: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People with contamination-based obsessive‒compulsive disorder (C-OCD) experience contamination-related stimuli as more disgusting than normal, which leads to avoidance behavior or washing and cleaning compulsions. This study aimed to investigate whether evaluative conditioning through repetitive pairing of a contamination-related stimulus with a pleasant stimulus and transcranial stimulation over the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC), the brain area involved in disgust processing, can reduce the intensity of disgust experienced. METHOD: Forty-eight participants (85% women) with C-OCD were

Introduction to the special issue: How nonclinical psychology research can inform clinical perspectives on disgust.

Disgust is a universal emotion that significantly impacts human behavior and psychological well-being. While clinical psychology researchers made great strides in understanding disgust in the context of psychopathology, nonclinical researchers have contributed valuable insights that can inform clinical perspectives on disgust. This special issue aims to bring together the latest nonclinical research that can shed light on the nature, causes, and consequences of disgust-related psychopathology. The five articles in this issue cover various nonclinical topics, including inhibitory learning, auto

Anxiety sensitivity and disgust sensitivity predict blood-injection-injury fears in individuals with dental anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety sensitivity (AS) and disgust sensitivity (DS) are transdiagnostic vulnerability factors for anxiety. Both correlate with blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia symptoms in several studies; however, there is ambiguity about their relative contributions, and studies investigating this have relied on unselected samples. Furthermore, although DS reliably predicts BII in studies that do not account for AS, this may be limited to domain-specific DS rather than DS more broadly. AIMS: The aims of this study were to examine AS and DS as separate and simultaneous predictors of BII fear

Deontological morality can be experimentally enhanced by increasing disgust: A transcranial direct current stimulation study.

Previous studies empirically support the existence of a distinctive association between deontological (but not altruistic) guilt and both disgust and obsessive-compulsive (OC) symptoms. Given that the neural substrate underlying deontological guilt comprises brain regions strictly implicated in the emotion of disgust (i.e. the insula), the present study aimed to test the hypothesis that indirect stimulation of the insula via transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) would enhance disgust and morality in the deontological domain. A randomized, sham-controlled, within-subject design was use

Internal and External Forms of Blame and Disgust and Their Relationships to Suicidal Ideation Within Vulnerable Populations.

Suicide risk is elevated among vulnerable populations. We examined two forms of internalization (i.e., self-blame, self-disgust) and externalization (i.e., other-blame, societal-disgust) and their associations with suicidal ideation (SI) in two studies. In Study 1 (n = 967), participants with mood and/or anxiety disorders completed self-report measures at admission and discharge on self-blame, other-blame, and SI. Study 2 (n = 295) investigated similar constructs among a sexual minority sample, with the addition of covariates including internalized homophobia, homophobia experiences, perceived
