A computational study to model the effect of electrode-to-auditory nerve fiber distance on spectral resolution in cochlear implant.

Spectral ripple discrimination (SRD) has been widely used to evaluate the spectral resolution in cochlear implant (CI) recipients based on its strong correlation with speech perception performance. However, despite its usefulness for predicting speech perception outcomes, SRD performance exhibits large across-subject variabilities even among subjects implanted with the same CIs and sound processors. The potential factors of this observation include current spread, nerve survival, and CI mapping. Previous studies have found that the spectral resolution reduces with increasing distance of the st

Dyspnoea at rest and at the end of different exercises in patients with near-fatal asthma.

Blunted perception of dyspnoea under resistive loading has been observed in patients with a history of near-fatal asthma (NFA). The perception of dyspnoea at rest and at the end point of various exercises was assessed in such patients. Respiratory function and exercise capacity (6-min walking distance, incremental cycloergometry and inspiratory threshold loading) were assessed in seven NFA and eight non-NFA patients. Dyspnoea (Borg scale) was measured at rest and at the end point of the various exercises. Dyspnoea at rest was significantly lower in NFA patients. Although exercise tolerance was

A common first-order time-to-contact based control of hand-closure initiation in catching and grasping.

To catch or grasp an object, the initiation of hand closure has to be coordinated with the relative movement between hand and object. In search of a common control of the initiation of hand closure for both tasks (van de Kamp, Bongers, & Zaal, 2010), the authors studied two tasks, catching while keeping the hand stationary and prehension. They showed that the initiation of hand closure could well be based on first-order time-to-contact in the prehension task but not in the catching task studied. The current study tested if the fact that the hand-object gap was closed at a linear rate made that

Cholinergic receptor blockade impairs spatial localization by use of distal cues in the rat.

Spatial localization was studied in the Morris water maze. The task required rats to escape from cool water (made opaque by milk) by finding a submerged, invisible platform located at a fixed place within the room. The start point was varied randomly, and there was no local cues to indicate the position of the platform. After training, the platform was moved. Rats subjected to central cholinergic receptor blockade with atropine sulfate were compared with normal rats and rats receiving peripheral cholinergic blockade with atropine methylnitrate. The controls for the use of search strategies, as

Imperfect Size Invariance in Face Discrimination.

Multiple findings suggest that human visual perception exhibits extensive size invariance (i.e., insensitivity to retinal image size changes) for multiple object categories. This is often investigated when retinal image size changes following real-world image size changes, but viewing distance is kept constant, a situation that does not reflect daily vision where objects retain their real-world size and their image size on the retina changes as a function of viewing distance. Here, we measured face discrimination performance to parametrically growing face differences and assessed size invarian

Medial Temporal Lobe Damage Impairs Temporal Integration in Episodic Memory.

Although the role of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and the hippocampus in episodic memory is well established, there is emerging evidence that these regions play a broader role in cognition, specifically in temporal processing. However, despite strong evidence that the hippocampus plays a critical role in sequential processing, the involvement of the MTL in timing per se is poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated whether patients with MTL damage exhibit differential performance on a temporal distance memory task. Critically, we manipulated context shifts, or boundaries, which

Grasping what is graspable: evidence from visual form agnosia.

Patient DF has profound visual form agnosia. Despite this, she has no problem adjusting her finger-thumb grip aperture to the width of objects when reaching to grasp them. In a previous study, however, she was found to have great difficulty in scaling her grip aperture when attempting to grasp a transparent disc through two holes cut into it. This problem was attributed to a putative difference between the visual processing of size and distance in the brain, whereby DF retained the capacity for processing object size but not the separation between distinct elements such as holes. In the presen

[Neuroimaging of color and spatial perception].

Spatial orientation and perception of distance are anchored in the visual system in the same way as color perception. However, different centers with different levels of expression are involved in the various aspects of visual processing starting from the primary visual cortex in the occipital lobes. In this article the investigation methods and designs are described by which the various functions within the visual system can be assigned to the appropriate specialized center in the parietal and temporal lobes using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Do panic-agoraphobics overestimate distances?

Twenty-five subjects suffering from Panic Disorder with agoraphobia (PDA) and 25 normal controls (NC) were asked to estimate distances of familiar places of their town and non-distance stimuli. PDA subjects also completed the Mobility Inventory for Agoraphobia (MIA). Subjects with PDA significantly overestimated distances as compared to NC, whereas no significant difference was found on estimates of non-distance stimuli. Within the PDA group, significant correlations were found between distance estimates and subsets of MIA concerning the ways of moving through the environment. Although with ca

Objective assessment of facial asymmetry in rhinoplasty patients.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence and nature of facial asymmetry in patients referred for consideration of aesthetic rhinoplasty and to assess whether objective anthropometric facial measurements correlate with subjective perceptions of asymmetry. DESIGN: Two independent observers measured facial features, including midline to medial and lateral canthi, tragus, ala, and oral commissure distances, in 234 prerhinoplasty surgical photographs. The photographs were rated by 10 independent observers for a global "first impression" of facial symmetry, and the relationship between anthropometric

The representation of object distance: evidence from neuroimaging and neuropsychology.

Perceived distance in two-dimensional (2D) images relies on monocular distance cues. Here, we examined the representation of perceived object distance using a continuous carry-over adaptation design for fMRI. The task was to look at photographs of objects and make a judgment as to whether or not the item belonged in the kitchen. Importantly, this task was orthogonal to the variable of interest: the object's perceived distance from the viewer. In Experiment 1, whole brain group analyses identified bilateral clusters in the superior occipital gyrus (approximately area V3/V3A) that showed paramet

Mnemonic Encoding and Cortical Organization in Parietal and Prefrontal Cortices.

Persistent activity within the frontoparietal network is consistently observed during tasks that require working memory. However, the neural circuit mechanisms underlying persistent neuronal encoding within this network remain unresolved. Here, we ask how neural circuits support persistent activity by examining population recordings from posterior parietal (PPC) and prefrontal (PFC) cortices in two male monkeys that performed spatial and motion direction-based tasks that required working memory. While spatially selective persistent activity was observed in both areas, robust selective persiste

Ant navigation en route to the goal: signature routes facilitate way-finding of Gigantiops destructor.

We investigated in laboratory conditions how foragers of the tropical ant Gigantiops destructor develop individually distinctive landmark routes. Way-finding along a familiar route involved the recognition of at least two locations, nest and feeding site, and the representation of spatial relations between these places. Familiar visual landmarks were important both at the beginning and at the end of the foraging journey. A motor routine guided the ants at the start of their foraging path towards the first landmarks, which they learnt to pass consistently on the same side, before taking the nex

The mechanism of physiological height vertigo. I. Theoretical approach and psychophysics.

A theory is presented supporting a geometrical explanation of physiological height vertigo as a 'distance vertigo' created by visual destabilization of posture when the distance between the observer and visible stationary contrasts becomes critically large. Though height vertigo is generally regarded as a psychopathological process, we hypothesize that it might instead result from an intersensory mismatch when visual information is at variance with vestibular and proprioceptive inputs. Psychophysical experiments confirming the hypothesis revealed that: 1) height vertigo is clearly related to b

Multiple perceptual distortions and their modulation in leftsided visual neglect.

There is an ongoing debate concerning the perception and neural representation of space in neglect. Four experiments are here reported designed to further investigate the nature of perceptual distortions and their modifiability in patients with neglect. In Experiment 1 it was found that neglect patients, in contrast to left- or right-hemisphere lesioned control patients and normal subjects, show similar distortions of perceived visual space when judging the extension of horizontal distances (space distortion) as compared to the horizontal size of objects (size distortion). Similar deficits wer

From Self to Stranger: A Hierarchical Pattern of Subjective Value in Social Contexts.

Self-bias is well-documented in perception and memory, but the role of self in subjective value across social relationships remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by examining how subjective value is shaped by social closeness. Study 1 established a clear hierarchical pattern: shapes associated with the self were valued most, followed by those linked to a friend, then a stranger. Study 2 replicated and extended this pattern through three sub-experiments, confirming its robustness when replacing "friend" with "mother," using real names, and employing more complex visual stimuli. Task- and response related dissociations between neglect in near and far space: a morphometric case study.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with unilateral neglect may show line bisection errors selectively in either near (within hand reaching) or far (beyond hand reaching) space which suggests that these two spatial areas are coded differently by the brain. This exploratory study investigated, whether any difference in performance between these spatial domains might be task-independent or modulated by the requirement for a motor response. METHODS: A 31-year-old right brain damaged patient (MF) and a group of age matched healthy controls were assessed with two serial visual search tasks and a Landmark parad

Deficits in upper limb position sense of children with Spastic Hemiparetic Cerebral Palsy are distance-dependent.

This study examined the arm position sense in children with Spastic Hemiparetic Cerebral Palsy (SHCP) and typically developing children (TD) by means of a contralateral matching task. This task required participants to match the position of one arm with the position of the other arm for different target distances and from different starting positions. Results showed that children with SHCP exhibited with both arms larger matching errors than the TD group, but only when the distance between the arms at the start of the movement was large. In addition, the difference in errors between the less-i

The detection of differences in the cues to distance by elderly hearing-impaired listeners.

This experiment measured the capability of hearing-impaired individuals to discriminate differences in the cues to the distance of spoken sentences. The stimuli were generated synthetically, using a room-image procedure to calculate the direct sound and first 74 reflections for a source placed in a 7 x 9 m room, and then presenting each of those sounds individually through a circular array of 24 loudspeakers. Seventy-seven listeners participated, aged 22-83 years and with hearing levels from -5 to 59 dB HL. In conditions where a substantial change in overall level due to the inverse-square law
