Contact with domestic dogs increases pathogen exposure in endangered African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus).

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases have contributed to the decline and local extinction of several wildlife species, including African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus). Mitigating such disease threats is challenging, partly because uncertainty about disease dynamics makes it difficult to identify the best management approaches. Serious impacts on susceptible populations most frequently occur when generalist pathogens are maintained within populations of abundant (often domestic) "reservoir" hosts, and spill over into less abundant host species. If this is the case, disease control directed at the reserv

Urinary markers in healthy young and aged dogs and dogs with chronic kidney disease.

BACKGROUND: Blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine concentrations only detect a decrease of > 75% of renal functional mass. Therefore, there is a need for markers that allow early detection and localization of renal damage. HYPOTHESIS: Urinary albumin (uALB), C-reactive protein (uCRP), retinol binding protein (uRBP), and N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (uNAG) concentrations are increased in dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD) compared with healthy controls and in healthy older dogs compared with young dogs. ANIMALS: Ten dogs with CKD, 10 healthy young dogs (age 1-3 years), and 10 health

Severe attacks by dogs: characteristics of the dogs, the victims, and the attack settings.

Sixteen incidents involving dog bites fitting the description "severe" were identified among 5,711 dog bite incidents reported to health departments in five South Carolina counties (population 750,912 in 1980) between July 1, 1979, and June 30, 1982. A "severe" attack was defined as one in which the dog "repeatedly bit or vigorously shook its victim, and the victim or the person intervening had extreme difficulty terminating the attack." Information from health department records was clarified by interviews with animal control officers, health and police officials, and persons with firsthand k

Characterization of the dog Agouti gene and a nonagoutimutation in German Shepherd Dogs.

The interaction between two genes, Agouti and Melanocortin-1 receptor ( Mc1r), produces diverse pigment patterns in mammals by regulating the type, amount, and distribution pattern of the two pigment types found in mammalian hair: eumelanin (brown/black) and pheomelanin (yellow/red). In domestic dogs ( Canis familiaris), there is a tremendous variation in coat color patterns between and within breeds; however, previous studies suggest that the molecular genetics of pigment-type switching in dogs may differ from that of other mammals. Here we report the identification and characterization of th

German shepherd dog pyoderma: a prospective study of 12 dogs.

Twelve German shepherd dogs, each diagnosed as having a recurrent or refractory deep pyoderma (i.e., German shepherd dog pyoderma [GSP]), were evaluated for several parameters over a six-year period. Results indicated that GSP could be associated with flea allergy dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, food allergy, cell-mediated immunodeficiency, or hypothyroidism, or could be an idiopathic disease. The combination of diseases present for a given dog varied from case to case. Adequate control of the pyoderma was achieved only after each identified underlying disease was treated specifically, along wi

Magnetic resonance imaging of dogs with cervical disease revealed a higher proportion of intervertebral disk disease in small dogs and neoplasia in large dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the proportion of lesions identified on cervical MRI in dogs based on weight. METHODS: Medical records from a tertiary referral hospital were reviewed for dogs that underwent cervical MRI to investigate clinical signs consistent with cervical disease from August 30, 2019, through August 30, 2024. Dogs were grouped according to their weight (< 15 or ≥ 15 kg). Case details, including the patients' weight, breed, age, sex and neuter status, presenting clinical signs, and MRI findings, were recorded. RESULTS: There were 270 dogs included in the study. In dogs weighing < 15

Comparison of production of Staphylococcus intermedius exotoxin among clinically normal dogs, atopic dogs with recurrent pyoderma, and dogs with a single episode of pyoderma.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether exotoxin production by Staphylococcus intermedius is an important factor in recurrence of pyoderma in atopic dogs. DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. ANIMALS: 30 client-owned dogs (10 clinically normal dogs, 10 atopic dogs with recurrent pyoderma, and 10 dogs with a single episode of pyoderma). PROCEDURE: Specimens for bacterial culturing were obtained from a pustule or papule of affected dogs or from skin of clinically normal dogs. Staphylococcus intermedius was isolated and processed. Supernatants were analyzed for staphylococcal exotoxins. Types of lesion

Why Anthropologists Should Study Dogs.

While primates have traditionally been a focus of evolutionary anthropologists, the domestic dog represents a valuable complementary model due to its long shared evolutionary history with humans. The advantages of studying dogs are particularly evident in four key areas: (1) analyzing evolutionary adaptations, (2) understanding humanity's past, (3) examining humanity's cultural diversity, and (4) assessing factors that influence human health. Dogs have convergently evolved social cognition and local adaptations (including altitude adaptations and the ability to digest starches and lactose) tha

Biliary Tract Infections in Dogs.

Bacterial biliary tract infections are increasingly recognized in dogs and should be considered in any dog presenting with vomiting, anorexia, and jaundice, particularly if they have abdominal discomfort or pyrexia. Commonly recognized clinicopathologic findings include increased liver enzyme activities, hyperbilirubinemia, and an inflammatory leucogram. Hepatobiliary ultrasound forms a key component of the diagnostic approach to these cases, aiding the identification of dogs that require urgent surgical management due to biliary tract rupture, or that have another surgical condition. Laser-Assisted Turbinectomy in Dogs.

This article discusses the laser-assisted turbinectomy (LATE) procedure and indications for its performance in dogs suffering from brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). The article summarizes landmark works that reported, for the first time, endoscopic-assisted identification and treatment of structures within the brachycephalic nose that contribute to intranasal obstruction and resistance to breathing, specifically hypertrophic and aberrant nasal turbinates. Brachycephaly is discussed in the context of how these aberrations form and how definitive treatments such as LATE and adju

Nasal angioleiomyoma in 2 dogs.

This case report describes 2 dogs, an Appenzeller Mountain dog and an Irish Wolfhound, with angioleiomyoma within the nasal cavity. Endoscopic surgical resection resulted in cure in both dogs. Macroscopically and on diagnostic imaging, tumor masses may appear malignant because of local turbinate destruction. This highlights the importance of histological examination before any recommendations are made to owners because tumors of the nasal cavity may be benign and surgery curative.

Humeral Intracondylar Fissure in Dogs.

Humeral intracondylar fissure (HIF) was first described as incomplete ossification of the humeral condyle. It is now known that the fissure is a stress fracture in some dogs. The descriptive term HIF is therefore preferred. In young dogs an incomplete ossification cause may still be valid. Symptomatic HIF is treated surgically with a transcondylar implant. The aim is to alleviate lameness and avoid condylar fracture. Choosing an appropriate surgical approach and implant can reduce complications. HIF is not always symptomatic and, in these cases, surgical management is more controversial, becau

Lissencephaly in Shih Tzu dogs.

BACKGROUND: Lissencephaly is a brain malformation characterized by smooth and thickened cerebral surface, which may result in structural epilepsy. Lissencephaly is not common in veterinary medicine. Here, we characterize the first cases of lissencephaly in four Shih Tzu dogs, including clinical presentations and findings of magnetic resonance imaging of lissencephaly and several concomitant brain malformations. CASE PRESENTATION: Early-onset acute signs of forebrain abnormalities were observed in all dogs, which were mainly cluster seizures and behavioral alterations. Based on neurological ex

Microsporidial keratopathy in two dogs.

A microsporidial keratopathy is described in two dogs. Both dogs presented with a unilateral stromal keratopathy characterized by multifocal coalescing opacities, and the diagnosis was made on histopathologic examination of keratectomy specimens. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded corneal tissue was performed in one dog, and the morphologic features were consistent with Nosema species infection. Both dogs were initially diagnosed and treated by superficial keratectomy. One dog received additional antifungal medication and underwent a penetrating keratop

Antebrachiometacarpal arthrodesis in five dogs.

CASE REPORTS: Five dogs (4 with severe carpal contracture, 1 with a chronically infected carpal joint) underwent antebrachiometacarpal arthrodesis. Excision of all carpal bones, except the accessory carpal bone, was done, either because of persistent infection or to allow the manus to be arthrodesed in a functional position. All five dogs developed varying degrees of soft tissue swelling of the surgical site following surgery. All five arthrodeses achieved complete osseous union within 4-67 weeks. The immediate postoperative distal radiometacarpal frontal plane angulation ranged from 1° to 19°

Contraception in Dogs and Cats.

Although surgical sterilization is the most common approach to reproductive management of dogs and cats in North America and many other places, there is growing interest in nonsurgical and reversible methods. This review summarizes the methods currently available for use as reversible contraception in dogs and cats, along with cautions about reported side effects. The products covered include synthetic steroid hormones, peptide hormone agonists, vaccines, and a barrier method.

The problem of stray dogs.

The effective management of stray dogs is critically important in any rabies vaccination programme. In many rabies-endemic countries, stray dogs represent a significant proportion of both the free-roaming and total dog populations, and to ensure that rabies elimination programmes are successful, it is essential that this portion of the dog population (stray dogs) is vaccinated at high coverage. However, there are a number of challenges to managing and delivering rabies vaccinations to stray dogs. This paper will review the most pertinent issues relating to the problem of stray dogs and rabies
