OBJECTIVES: Exploration of experience of harms due to another person's drinking within a demographic particularly vulnerable to these consequences. Importance of study: Largest sampling of young Australian risky drinkers, who are underrepresented in general population surveys. The range of harms due to others' drinking reported here is more comprehensive than documented elsewhere.
STUDY TYPE: Cross-sectional self-report survey.
METHODS: Participants were 14-19 years old and screened as being within the riskiest-drinking 25% for their age cohort. The convenience sample of 3465 was recruited p

OBJECTIVE: Hazardous alcohol use by HIV-infected women is associated with poor HIV outcomes and HIV transmission risk behaviors. We examined the effectiveness of brief alcohol intervention (BI) among hazardous drinking women receiving care in an urban HIV clinic.
METHODS: Women were randomized to a 2-session BI or usual care. Outcomes assessed at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months included 90-day frequency of any alcohol use and heavy/binge drinking (≥4 drinks per occasion), and average drinks per drinking episode. Secondary outcomes included HIV medication and appointment adherence, HIV-1 RNA sup

Recent research has indicated that developmental changes in the personality traits of neuroticism and impulsivity correlate with changes in problem drinking during emerging and young adulthood. However, it remains unclear what potential mechanisms, or mediators, could account for these associations. Drinking motives, particularly drinking to regulate negative affect (drinking to cope) and to get "high" or "drunk" (drinking for enhancement), have been posited to mediate the relationship between personality and drinking problems. Recent work indicates that changes in drinking motives parallel ch

BACKGROUND: Prospective studies have not previously examined whether a family history of alcoholism and drinking motives conjointly predict a diagnosed DSM-IV alcohol abuse or dependence in adults, despite a large literature that each is associated with alcohol consumption. The focus of this study is the conjoint, prospective examination of these risk factors in a 10-year longitudinal study of adults who were at-risk drinkers at baseline.
METHODS: Prospective, population-based cohort of drinkers aged 18 or older from a Northeastern U.S. area initially evaluated for history of alcohol use diso

OBJECTIVE: Drinking motives are proximal predictors of alcohol use and often conceptualized as traitlike constructs. However, research shows motives are dynamic, varying day-to-day. We compared associations between event-specific motives reported at first drink versus retrospectively the next morning and alcohol consumption and consequences.
METHOD: Heavy-drinking college students (N = 95) completed 28 days of ecological momentary assessments. At first drink of the day, participants reported whether they were drinking to reduce depression, reduce anxiety, have fun, get high/buzzed/drunk (high

PURPOSE: Subjective response to alcohol's stimulating and sedating effects is a person-level risk factor for heavy drinking and alcohol use disorder. Longitudinal and laboratory studies have demonstrated that at-risk individuals experience greater stimulation and lower sedation while drinking. While between-person subjective responses inform risk and etiology, in-the-moment assessments during daily-life drinking may elucidate the within-person processes by which stimulation and sedation may lead to heavier drinking. We aimed to characterize these momentary processes by testing momentary stimul

BACKGROUND: Rodent models of high alcohol drinking offer opportunities to better understand factors for alcohol use disorders (AUD) and test potential treatments. Selective breeding was carried out to create 2 unique High Drinking in the Dark (HDID-1, HDID-2) mouse lines that represent models of genetic risk for binge-like drinking. A number of studies have indicated that neuroimmune genes are important for regulation of alcohol drinking. We tested whether compounds shown to reduce drinking in other models also reduce alcohol intake in these unique genetic lines.
METHODS: We report tests of g

INTRODUCTION: Exhaled nitric oxide (FE(NO)) may be a biomarker for airway eosinophilia and of use in the management of childhood asthma. Caffeine ingestion has been associated with changes in FE(NO) concentration in adults. The present study tested the hypothesis that ingestion of a caffeine-containing cola drink will increase FE(NO) in asthmatic children.
METHODS: Exhaled NO was measured in children with asthma before, 30 and 60 min after taking a cola drink containing 0.7 mg/kg caffeine. Intrasubject changes in FE(NO) and flow independent NO parameters were determined including bronchial wa

We have recently observed increased stress responsiveness with regard to alcohol consumption in male rats that consumed alcohol since their adolescent period. Thus, early age at drinking onset can induce enhanced stress-induced alcohol drinking in male rats. However, it is not known whether female rats respond in a similar way. Therefore, we compared the drinking behavior of two female Wistar rat groups--one that acquired alcohol consumption during adolescence (adolescent group) and the other that acquired their drinking during adulthood (adult group) in a model of long-term voluntary alcohol

BACKGROUND: The study aimed to expand on existing research related to the theory of planned behavior (TPB) by exploring both between-person and within-person effects of descriptive norms and attitudes toward moderate and heavy drinking on drinking outcomes, including drinks per week, blackouts, and alcohol-related consequences. While previous studies focus on between-person effects, this study uniquely investigates both between-person effects as well as within-person changes over time, using longitudinal data collected at six points over 12 months.
METHODS: Participants included 484 mandated

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the refractive errors and the demographic associations between drinking water with excessive fluoride and normal drinking water among residents in Northern China. Of the 1843 residents, 1415 (aged ≥40 years) were divided into drinking-water-excessive fluoride (DWEF) group (>1.20 mg/L) and control group (≤1.20 mg/L) on the basis of the fluoride concentrations in drinking water. Of the 221 subjects in the DWEF group, with 1.47 ± 0.25 mg/L (fluoride concentrations in drinking water), the prevalence rates of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism were 38.5 % (

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The first aim was to estimate the extent to which the variation in alcohol use across specific drinking occasions arises from variation at the occasion level and from variation at the drinker level. The second aim was to identify characteristics of drinking situations that moderate or increase situational alcohol use beyond the influence of drinker-level characteristics.
DESIGN AND METHODS: The general population aged 15-69 years in Finland was sampled randomly in 2008. The multilevel analysis was based on data from 1511 drinkers and 2933 drinking occasions that occurre

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking in higher education is an important problem. To target binge drinking in students it is necessary to study the social context of students. Faculties (i.e., colleges or schools in Northern American education) are social contexts in which students behave, but little is known about how the faculty structure relates to monthly binge drinking. This study investigates the relationship with student-perceived binge drinking norms at faculty-level in addition to known personal determinants.
METHODS: Data were collected in 7181 students within 22 faculty-level units, using an

BACKGROUND: Problem drinking in college is a longstanding problem with potentially severe consequences. More recently, problem drinking has been linked to emotion regulation difficulties. However, these results are mixed and emphasize the need to examine moderating variables that may strengthen the problem drinking/emotion regulation relationship. Two such variables are child/adolescent sexual abuse (CASA) and drinking refusal self-efficacy (DRSE).
OBJECTIVES: The current study hypothesized that the relations between emotion regulation difficulties and problem drinking would be most salient f

BACKGROUND: Partially due to the complexity associated with conducting trials, there have been relatively few regulatory agency-approved medications for the treatment of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Heterogeneity of study samples, such as participant characteristics (including variation in alcohol consumption) as well as drinking efficacy endpoints, may lead to inconsistency in results and a potential increase in Type II errors. The aim of this study is to begin to fill in the knowledge gap of optimal clinical trial design by analyzing potential predictors of outcomes.
METHODS: Five federally

According to the Dutch Drinking Water Act of 2011, Dutch drinking water suppliers must conduct a Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) for infection by the following index pathogens: enterovirus, Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium and Giardia at least once every four years in order to assess the microbial safety of drinking water. The health-based target for safe drinking water is set at less than one infection per 10 000 persons per year. At Evides Water Company, concern has arisen whether their drinking water treatment, mainly based on UV inactivation and chlorine dioxide, reduces levels

BACKGROUND: We have developed an animal model of alcohol self-administration that initially employs schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP) to establish reliable ethanol consumption under open access (22 h/d) conditions with food and water concurrently available. SIP is an adjunctive behavior that is generated by constraining access to an important commodity (e.g., flavored food). The induction schedule and ethanol polydipsia generated under these conditions affords the opportunity to investigate the development of drinking typologies that lead to chronic, excessive alcohol consumption.

OBJECTIVES: This study explored whether college students who were first intoxicated by alcohol at ages younger than 19 are more likely to become alcohol dependent and frequent heavy drinkers, drive after drinking, ride with intoxicated drivers and be injured after drinking. It also investigated whether these results occur because these students believe they can drink more and still drive legally and safely.
METHOD: In 1999, 14,138 of 23,751 full-time 4-year students from a random sample of 119 college and universities nationwide completed self-administered questionnaires (response rate: 60%).
