[Determination of mental dependence liability of drugs using small animals. 3. Selective drinking behavior of mice caused by dependence-liable drugs].

Using mice, drug solution-directed drinking behavior was investigated in the choice test between drug solution and tap water following various regimes of pretreatment. In the preliminary experiments, the concentration of the drug solution for the pretreatment and choice test and also the dose of injection was determined for each drug, depending on the amount of the drug to produce its CNS action without any undesirable toxic effect. The duration of pretreatment and the succeeding choice test was also settled as 6 days. Animals forcedly given morphine or cocaine as the drinking solution during

Effects of centrally administered endogenous opioid peptides on drinking behavior, increased plasma vasopressin concentration and pressor response to hypertonic sodium chloride.

Intracerebroventricular (i.v.t.) administration of beta-endorphin or leucine5-enkephalin inhibited drinking behavior, the pressor response and increased plasma vasopressin concentration stimulated by an acute elevation in CSF sodium chloride concentration (10 microliter, 1 M NaCl i.v.t.). These effects of endogenous opioid peptides were prevented by naloxone, indicating opiate receptors were required for the biologic response. Drinking behavior associated with regulatory stimuli operant during dehydration was also inhibited by opioid peptides. beta-Endorphin (i.v.t.) delayed the onset and/or r

Factor structure, group invariance, and concurrent validity of scores from the college eating and drinking behavior scale among U.S. college students.

Food and alcohol disturbance (FAD) refers to the intersection of alcohol- and eating-related motives and behaviors, such as restricting food intake before or during alcohol use to offset caloric intake or to enhance intoxication. Valid assessment is critical for advancing research on FAD. We tested the factor structure, group invariance, and concurrent validity of the College Eating and Drinking Behavior Scale (CEDBS) in a large college student sample (n = 2610; Mage = 20.95, SD = 4.65; 71.8% female; 77% White; 86% non-Hispanic). Participants completed measures assessing antecedents of alcohol

The party's not over: Living situation, perceived party norms, and drinking games behavior among college students during the pandemic (COVID-19).

Objective: Playing drinking games (DGs) is a common, socially-interactive risky drinking activity. During the pandemic, many students either returned home to live with their parents or remained on campus. Because DGs often require social interaction, playing DGs in-person can increase students' risk for COVID-19 exposure. Thus, we examined whether living situation and perceptions of one's college/university as a party school increased risk for playing DGs in-person during a pandemic. Method: Students who reported recent alcohol use from 12 colleges/universities (n = 874; Mage = 19.38/SDage =

Corneal Behavior during Tonometer Measurement during the Water Drinking Test in Eyes with XEN GelStent in Comparison to Non-Implanted Eyes.

Biomechanics of the cornea have significant influences on the non-contact measurement of the intraocular pressure. The corneal behaviour during tonometry is a fundamental factor in estimating its value. The aim of the study was to analyse the behaviour of the cornea during tonometric measurement with the forced change in intraocular pressure during the water drinking test. Ocular Response Analyser (Reichert) was used to the measurement. Besides four basic parameters connected with intraocular pressure (IOPg, IOPcc) and biomechanics (corneal hysteresis CH and corneal resistance factor (CRF), ot

Examining Associations Between Social Networking Site Alcohol-Specific Social Norms, Posting Behavior, and Drinking to Cope During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Emerging research suggests that there may be important links between social networking site (SNS) use and alcohol consumption specific to COVID-19. In addition, substantial research indicates that descriptive normative perceptions are a strong predictor of drinking behavior more generally. However, less is known about SNS-specific norms and how they might be associated with health-related behavior. Thus, the primary goal of this study was to determine whether descriptive normative perceptions for alcohol posting related to COVID-19 on SNSs are associated with both personal SNS posting behavior

Reciprocal relations between stressors and drinking behavior: a three-wave panel study of late middle-aged and older women and men.

AIM: To examine reciprocal relations between stressors and drinking behavior among late-middle-aged and older women and men. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A community sample of 621 women and 941 men (mean age = 61) provided information about their life stressors and drinking behavior at three times: initial assessment, 1 year later and 4 years later. Structural equation modeling with manifest variables was used to examine cross-temporal relations between stressors and drinking behavior. FINDINGS: Stressors did not predict heavier or more frequent drinking. In fact, among women, increase

The self-assembly behavior of ovotransferrin nanospheres driven by hydrophobic interaction and their application in astaxanthin fortified almond milk drink.

The self-assembly of food-grade proteins into nanostructures enables precise delivery of active ingredients, enhancing food stability and sensory quality. Here, we develop novel ovotransferrin nanospheres (OVT NSs) using a simple and efficient method under mild reaction conditions. OVT is hydrolyzed into peptides by subtilisin A at 25 °C and pH 7.5; when critical micelle concentration (CMC) exceeds 50 μg/mL, amphiphilic OVT peptides aggregate by hydrophobic interactions and self-assemble into spherical nanomicelles by β-sheet stacking. Mature OVT NSs have internal hollow structure and surface

Statistically derived patterns of behavioral economic risk among heavy-drinking college students: A latent profile analysis.

High levels of 3 behavioral economic indices (delay discounting, alcohol demand, and proportionate substance-related reinforcement) are consistently associated with greater alcohol misuse and alcohol-related problems. However, it is unclear whether and how these variables jointly increase the risk for alcohol-related outcomes among college students who engage in heavy episodic drinking (HED; 4/5+ drinks for women/men, respectively). The current study used a person-centered approach to identify similar patterns of behavioral economic domains among heavy-drinking college students and investigate

Chronic moderate alcohol drinking alters insulin release without affecting cognitive and emotion-like behaviors in rats.

Because the consumption of alcoholic beverages prevails in society, its effects on diabetes risk is a subject of interest. Extant literature on this issue often disagrees. Here, we probed the effects of chronic moderate ethanol consumption on glucose metabolism in rats. The effect of chronic moderate alcohol drinking on depression- and anxiety-like behaviors and memory was also explored. Adolescent male and female Long-Evans rats consumed saccharin-sweetened 5% (1 week) and 10% ethanol (7 weeks) under a 7.5-h/day (Monday-Friday) access schedule. This exposure was followed by sucrose preference

Drinking game behaviors, motivations to play, contextual factors, and perceived risks among university students in New Zealand.

University students from different countries report regular drinking game (DG) participation, a risky social activity known to encourage heavy consumption. Theory and research suggest that general drinking motives are proximal correlates of alcohol use. Motives specific to DGs are also associated with DG behaviors. Students can play DGs in different social contexts (e.g., house parties, with friends/roommates), and many recognize the associated health risks. However, the influence of motives to play DGs, perceived risk, and the social context on DG behaviors is unknown among New Zealand (NZ) u

Operant ethanol self-administration behaviors do not predict sex differences in continuous access home cage drinking.

Understanding sex differences in disease prevalence is critical to public health, particularly in the context of alcohol use disorder (AUD). The goal of this study was to understand sex differences in ethanol drinking behavior and define the precise conditions under which sex differences emerge. Consistent with prior work, C57BL/6J females drank more than males under continuous access two-bottle choice conditions. However, using ethanol self-administration - where an operant response results in access to an ethanol sipper for a fixed time period - we found no sex differences in operant respons

Development and validation of the C-SHADE scale for measuring perpetration of common sexually harassing and aggressive behaviors in drinking environments.

BACKGROUND: Sexual aggression (SA) is ubiquitous in drinking environments. Although such behavior is often seen as normal and acceptable, the targets of SA experience many negative consequences. This research aimed to develop a valid measure of common acts of SA in drinking settings for estimating prevalence and evaluating prevention initiatives. METHODS: We developed a questionnaire measure of common acts of sexual harassment and aggression in drinking environments (C-SHADE) based on descriptions of SA behavior from our own and others' research. The measure was validated in a cross-sectional

Risky behaviors, substance use, and other lifestyle correlates of energy drink consumption in children and adolescents: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Increasing concerns have been raised on the health-related risks connected with energy drink (ED) consumption in children and adolescents, with high acute or chronic consumers exceeding 10% in either age group in Europe in 2011. Preliminary evidence has suggested a common pattern of ED and substance use, especially alcohol. Additional evidence has been accumulating very fast; in addition, other lifestyle and risky behaviors may contribute to shed light on the complex interplay of factors involved in ED consumption. We have undertaken a comprehensive systematic review of the evidenc
