Assessment of Water Quality among Handwashing and Drinking Water Stations in Schools in Belize, 2022.

Water quality assessments are critical for ensuring timely responses to water-related concerns, particularly in low-resource areas with limited water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure. In collaboration with the Belize Ministry of Health and Wellness and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, we conducted a survey on WASH infrastructure and resources among 221 schools. We identified 65 schools across all six districts of Belize for water quality testing. Among these 65 schools, 83% had at least one water sample that did not meet the WHO's recommended free chlor

Microbial safety and quality assessment of drinking water from various water sources in Punjab, India.

Waterborne illnesses caused by contaminated water are increasing due to lack of accessibility to clean drinking water. This study investigates the microbial safety and antibiotic resistance profiles of waterborne microbes in different drinking water sources of Ludhiana, Punjab. Using most probable number as the selection criteria, 66% samples showed the presence of coliforms and other microbes with count ranging from 3 to 2600/100 mL. Overall, 50% of tap water samples were found to be unacceptable, followed by submersible (25%) and filters/RO systems (20%). The results revealed the presence of

Drinking-Water Quality in Neighborhood Kiosks: Suppliers' Willingness to Test Their Water in Northern Haiti.

For-profit drinking water vendors, known as kiosks, sell safe drinking water to residents in neighborhoods in Haiti. Kiosks increased in number to address health concerns related to the 2010 cholera outbreak and have been a regular feature in a nation with few functioning water systems. However, years after the donor-funded expansion of drinking-water kiosks, waterborne diseases are still common in the Northern Corridor of the country. This paper assesses water quality at kiosks in the Northern Corridor, the extent to which kiosk owners currently test their water, and their willingness to pay

Drinking water source and exposure to regulated water contaminants in the California Teachers Study cohort.

BACKGROUND: Pollutants including metals/metalloids, nitrate, disinfection byproducts, and volatile organic compounds contaminate federally regulated community water systems (CWS) and unregulated domestic wells across the United States. Exposures and associated health effects, particularly at levels below regulatory limits, are understudied. OBJECTIVE: We described drinking water sources and exposures for the California Teachers Study (CTS), a prospective cohort of female California teachers and administrators. METHODS: Participants' geocoded addresses at enrollment (1995-1996) were linked to

National primary drinking water regulations: Long Term 1 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule. Final rule.

In this document, EPA is finalizing the Long Term 1 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT1ESWTR). The purposes of the LT1ESWTR are to improve control of microbial pathogens, specifically the protozoan Cryptosporidium, in drinking water and address risk trade- offs with disinfection byproducts. The rule will require systems to meet strengthened filtration requirements as well as to calculate levels of microbial inactivation to ensure that microbial protection is not jeopardized if systems make changes to comply with disinfection requirements of the Stage 1 Disinfection and Disinfection Bypr

The Water Inside and Out: Drinking Water Data, Disparities, and Regulatory Distinctions Among California's Carceral and Noncarceral Water Systems.

BACKGROUND: Critical environmental justice calls attention to prisons, jails, and other carceral facilities as sites key to understanding and transforming environmental injustices. Thus far, however, limited research has examined water provision in carceral facilities. METHODS: This study leverages spatial methods to identify the water systems serving 325 California carceral facilities. We then compare water system characteristics and performance measures across 4,250 water systems categorized into three system types: carceral water systems, partially carceral-serving water systems, and other

Residual Toxicity of Iodinated Disinfection Byproducts in Boiled Drinking Water.

Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) represent a persistent challenge to supply safe drinking water. While boiling drinking water has been confirmed to reduce human exposure risks to DBPs, the remaining risk, particularly waters with iodide, has been underestimated. Herein, we examined how volatilization and thermally accelerated transformations could shift the profiles of the priority DBPs in boiled water. We comprehensively evaluated the toxicity of samples before and after boiling, the results of which suggested that 40-70% of cytotoxicity and 59-89% of genotoxicity remain after boiling. The non-

Meta-Transcriptomic Response to Copper Corrosion in Drinking Water Biofilms.

Drinking water biofilm ecosystems harbor complex and dynamic prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbial communities. However, little is known about the impact of copper corrosion on microbial community functions in metabolisms and resistance. This study was conducted to evaluate the impact of upstream Cu pipe materials on downstream viable community structures, pathogen populations, and metatranscriptomic responses of the microbial communities in drinking water biofilms. Randomly transcribed cDNA was generated and sequenced from downstream biofilm samples of either unplasticized polyvinylchloride (P

Particle-associated and free-living Legionella spp. in drinking water.

The Legionella genus houses several opportunistic pathogens that cause legionellosis, which ranges from mild (Pontiac Fever) to severe (Legionnaires' disease). Legionella pneumophila (Lp), the leading observed cause of legionellosis, persists in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) and building plumbing systems due to factors such as intrinsic disinfectant resistance and shielding by biofilms and free-living amoebae. Remediation efforts, therefore, might be hindered if Lp is primarily associated with biofilms, free-living amoebae, or other particles. However, the extent to which Lp and

Ethyl pyruvate supplemented in drinking water ameliorates experimental nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

Inflammation and oxidative stress play a significant role in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Ethyl pyruvate (EP) is a novel anti-inflammatory agent and a potent reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger. Therefore, EP supplemented in drinking water may alleviate experimental NASH in this study (even though 0.3% of EP cannot attenuate the simple non-aggressive fatty liver). The methionine-choline-deficient (MCD) diet was given to the C57BL/6 male mice for 3 weeks to induce NASH. The NASH animals were randomized into 3 treatment groups: animals in the MCD alone group were

National scale assessment of total trihalomethanes in Irish drinking water.

Ireland reported the highest non-compliance with respect to total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) in drinking water across the 27 European Union Member States for the year 2010. We carried out a GIS-based investigation of the links between geographical parameters and catchment land-uses with TTHMs concentrations in Irish drinking water. A high risk catchment map was created using peat presence, rainfall (>1400 mm) and slope (<5%) and overlain with a map comprising the national dataset of routinely monitored TTHM concentrations. It appeared evident from the map that the presence of peat, rainfall and s

Onsite defluoridation system for drinking water treatment using calcium carbonate.

Fluoride in drinking water has several effects on teeth and bones. At concentrations of 1-1.5 mg/L, fluoride can strengthen enamel, improving dental health, but at concentrations above 1.5 to 4 mg/L can cause dental fluorosis. At concentrations of 4-10 mg/L, skeletal fluorosis can occur. There are many areas of the world that have excessive fluoride in drinking water, such as China, India, Sri Lanka, and the Rift Valley countries in Africa. Treatment solutions are needed, especially in poor areas where drinking water treatment plants are not available. On-site or individual treatment alternati

Boron exposure through drinking water during pregnancy and birth size.

BACKGROUND: Boron is a metalloid found at highly varying concentrations in soil and water. Experimental data indicate that boron is a developmental toxicant, but the few human toxicity data available concern mostly male reproduction. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate potential effects of boron exposure through drinking water on pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: In a mother-child cohort in northern Argentina (n=194), 1-3 samples of serum, whole blood and urine were collected per woman during pregnancy and analyzed for boron and other elements to which exposure occurred, using inductively coupled plasma mass

Drinking water biofilm cohesiveness changes under chlorination or hydrodynamic stress.

Attempts at removal of drinking water biofilms rely on various preventive and curative strategies such as nutrient reduction in drinking water, disinfection or water flushing, which have demonstrated limited efficiency. The main reason for these failures is the cohesiveness of the biofilm driven by the physico-chemical properties of its exopolymeric matrix (EPS). Effective cleaning procedures should break up the matrix and/or change the elastic properties of bacterial biofilms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in the cohesive strength of two-month-old drinking water biofilms un

Behavioral effects of developmental methylmercury drinking water exposure in rodents.

Early methylmercury (MeHg) exposure can have long-lasting consequences likely arising from impaired developmental processes, the outcome of which has been exposed in several longitudinal studies of affected populations. Given the large number of newborns at an increased risk of learning disabilities associated with in utero MeHg exposure, it is important to study neurobehavioral alterations using ecologically valid and physiologically relevant models. This review highlights the benefits of using the MeHg drinking water exposure paradigm and outlines behavioral outcomes arising from this proced

Phototransformation of selected pharmaceuticals during UV treatment of drinking water.

The kinetics of Ultraviolet C (UV-C)-induced direct phototransformation of four representative pharmaceuticals, i.e., 17alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2), diclofenac, sulfamethoxazole, and iopromide, was investigated in dilute solutions of pure water buffered at various pH values using a low-pressure and a medium-pressure mercury arc lamp. Except for iopromide, pH-dependent rate constants were observed, which could be related to acid-base equilibria. Quantum yields for direct phototransformation were found to be largely wavelength-independent, except for EE2. This compound, which also had a rather

Drinking water fluoridation: bone mineral density and hip fracture incidence.

The role of drinking water fluoride content for prevention of osteoporosis remains controversial. Therefore, we analyzed the influence of drinking water fluoridation on the incidence of osteoporotic hip fractures and bone mineral density (BMD) in two different communities in eastern Germany: in Chemnitz, drinking water was fluoridated (1 mg/L) over a period of 30 years; in Halle, the water was not fluoridated. BMD was measured in healthy hospital employees aged 20-60 years (Halle: 214 women, 98 men; Chemnitz: 201 women, 43 men, respectively) using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Hip fracture

Clozapine reduces water-drinking behavior in schizophrenic patients with polydipsia.

Disordered water balance, or polydipsia, is an underassessed and underreported phenomenon present in the severely psychiatrically disabled population. Prevalence rates for polydipsia range from 6.2 to 20%. We followed up five male patients (mean age 43) with chronic schizophrenia who met the Kane criteria for being treatment nonresponders and who, in addition, had marked polydipsia. Three patients had previously received medical care for hyponatremia and had to be placed on fluid restriction when admitted to the hospital. All patients exhibited polydipsia despite high doses of typical antipsyc
