Four-year evaluation of drug-impaired driving drug concentrations.

Drug-impaired driving is a significant public health and safety concern in the USA. To help assess current patterns of drug use in drivers, we evaluated 4 years of drug positivity in a large cohort of suspected impaired drivers. Samples collected between January 2017 and December 2020 were tested via a method compliant with the National Safety Council's Alcohol, Drugs, and Impairment Division's Tier I scope of recommended drugs. In 2017, NMS Labs received 17 346 driving under the influence of drugs cases, 17 471 in 2018, 19 050 in 2019, and 16 539 in 2020. The most common drug class detected w

Daily level predictors of impaired driving behaviors in young adults: Protocol design for utilizing daily assessments.

BACKGROUND: Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death among young adults (ages 18-25) in the United States. Many drivers implicated in these crashes are under the influence of alcohol, cannabis, or the simultaneous use of alcohol and cannabis. Extremely limited research has assessed impaired driving behaviors and their predictors at the daily level. Perceived norms and motives to use substances have empirical support suggesting they may impact impaired driving-related behavior. Novel approaches to assess these associations at the daily level are needed and may inform future interve

Psychotropic substance abuse and fitness to hold a driving license in Italy.

Objective: Driving under the influence (DUI) of psychotropic substances is a serious and widespread problem in road safety. All countries try to reduce the impact with legislative controls over the criteria to regain a driver's license after suspension. In many European countries there are mandatory clinical and toxicological examinations required before a license is regranted. In Italy, individuals convicted of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol must undergo a mandatory medico-legal and forensic toxicological examination prior to regranting of a license. This article reports

Workplace Violence Experienced by Substitute (Daeri) Drivers and Its Relationship to Depression in Korea.

Workplace violence is related to various health effects including mental illness such as anxiety or depression. In this study, the relationship between the experience of workplace violence and depression in substitute drivers in Korea, namely, daeri drivers, was investigated. To assess workplace violence, questions regarding types and frequency of the experience of violence over the past year were asked to the daeri drivers. In order to assess the risk of depression, the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale was used. Odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals of depression were e

Drunk driving has a speeding problem.

OBJECTIVES: Alcohol and excessive speeding are both linked to elevated crash risk. Alcohol-related and speeding-related crashes are recorded and treated as distinct, with separate etiologies. Yet, speeding and alcohol use are interrelated. We speculate that speeding might account for some of the crash risk associated with drunk driving. METHODS: Data from the Crash Investigation Sampling System were analyzed. Vehicle speeds, measured moments before crashes, were estimated from driver blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) for different levels of injury severity. We first applied a previously pub

Impact of naturalistic cannabis use on lateral control and speed: A driving simulator study.

OBJECTIVE: Cannabis has been shown to impair driving performance, but much of extant research has been conducted with relatively low concentration products, not reflective of the marketplace in states with legal adult recreational cannabis use. The study examined driving performance after cannabis use, inclusive of high concentration tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) products. METHODS: Participants (n = 118) completed three 20-minute simulated drives, with rural and urban segments. The study was within-subjects; participants completed a pre-use (baseline) drive, and two post-use drives at approximat

Feasibility and acceptability of a web-intervention to prevent alcohol and cannabis-impaired driving among adolescents in driver education.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents increasingly view cannabis as a substance with limited harm. Their propensity to engage in risky driving, combined with their relative driving inexperience, places adolescents at heightened risk for harm resulting from impaired driving. Driver education provides an opportunity to help prevent and reduce these risks, yet few interventions address cannabis-impaired driving, especially impairment from simultaneous use of both cannabis and alcohol. METHODS: We adapted a single-session primary care brief intervention (CHAT) for driver education programs. First, we conducted

Impact of the program life in traffic and new zero-tolerance drinking and driving law on the prevalence of driving after alcohol abuse in Brazilian capitals: An interrupted time series analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Driving under the influence of alcohol is one of the main factors for morbidity and mortality from traffic accidents. In 2010 and 2013, the Program Life in Traffic was implemented in Brazil, including the international initiative "Road Safety in Ten Countries", which established actions to reduce one of the main risk factors for road traffic injuries, the driving under the influence of alcohol. In 2012, a new zero-tolerance drinking and driving law (new dry law) was implemented, establishing a zero-tolerance limit for the drivers' blood alcohol concentration, and increasing punit

Drug use and driving behaviors among drivers with and without alcohol-related infractions.

INTRODUCTION: Brazil is one of the countries with the highest rates of alcohol-related traffic infractions, but little is known about the profile of the drivers who commit them. Identifying the characteristics of impaired drivers is essential for planning preventive actions. OBJECTIVE: To compare drug use and driving behavior profiles of drivers with and without alcohol-related infractions. METHODS: 178 drivers stopped at routine roadblocks were assessed by traffic agents who conducted standard roadblock procedures (document verification; request of a breathalyzer test [BT]). Roadside drug testing: comparison of two legal approaches in Belgium.

BACKGROUND: Internationally, urine on-site testing has been used for detecting drivers under the influence of drugs (DUID) but more and more countries, such as Belgium, are switching to oral fluid screening. OBJECTIVE: To compare the previous (published in 1999) and current (published 2009) enforcement procedures of DUID in Belgium. The two evaluated procedures differ in the way the drivers are screened by the police (signs of impairment versus signs of recent drug use), the matrix for screening (urine versus oral fluid) and the analytical cut-off concentrations in plasma. METHODS: Data on p

Self-underestimation of BAC as a predictor of risky driving in heavy drinkers.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol-related driving fatalities persist as a public health issue in the United States. Recent studies have focused on the role of driver risk-taking in DUI occurrences and consequent driving fatalities. This laboratory study examined simulated driver risk-taking under an acute dose of alcohol and a placebo to test the degree to which individual differences in risk-taking were predicted by drivers' self-appraisal of their intoxication and the degree to which alcohol impaired their inhibitory control. METHODS: Eighty young adult drivers (41 men and 39 women) received 0.65g/kg alc
