Measurements were made of the asbestos fibre and dust content of samples from 96 surgically excised lungs; 42 necropsies on patients with lung cancer, 11 necropsies on patients with non-pulmonary malignancies, and 59 necropsies on patients without any malignant disease. Iron oxides, particularly hematite, have been suspected for carcinogenic properties based on epidemiological observations and experimental data. Bronchial provocation tests performed on two seperate occasions in a farmer with dust from his own grain led to immediate and late respiratory reactions followed, without further exposure to grain dust, by severe respiratory reactions during subsequent nights. Studies of lung function, including measurements of closing volume, suggested that both large and small airways rather than lung parenchyma were primarily involved. Examination of the grain samples together with the results of skin and serologic tests suggested that the grain mite, Glycyphagus destructor, might be an important allergen.

Manual flax processing originated in Egypt in 2 000 BC. In the present study a representative sample of the workers involved in this trade, where flax is processed in small workshops or homes, was examined, and their dust exposure was evaluated. The aetiological importance of the house-dust mite, Dermatophagoides sp., was examined in 133 asthmatic children referred to hospital. Evidence of sensitization to this allergen from positive skin tests and the presence of circulating specific IgE was found in the majority of these children and sensitization often began in the preschool years. We characterized the variability in concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) measured in residential dust. Vacuum cleaner samples were collected from 289 homes in the California Childhood Leukemia Study during two sampling rounds from 2001 to 2010 and 15 PCBs were measured by high resolution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.
