Acute ischemic stroke in patients younger than the age of 50 years is a rare occurrence that results in high mortality and substantial loss of functional years of life. Internal carotid artery dissection (CAD) presents a rare, but serious condition that needs to be fully evaluated and carefully treated, as it may lead to an acute ischemic stroke in all, but mostly in younger patients. A possible cause for CAD, the carotid artery type of Eagle syndrome (ESy), is atypical and underrecognized. In this case report we present a case of a young patient with carotid artery type of ESy, resulting in a

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Eagle's syndrome is not uncommon in clinical work. Because of its atypical symptoms, it is easy to be misdiagnosed as other diseases, further leading to misdiagnosis and mistreatment. At present, there is no expert consensus or treatment guidelines for the disease. We evaluated the clinical characteristics and postoperative efficacy of 103 patients with Eagle's syndrome based on their clinical symptoms, radiological studies, and physical examination. Through the multicenter clinical study of Tongji Medical College and Dalian Medical University, we found some characteris

A 30-year-old bald eagle ( Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was presented with a history of hyporexia and lethargy. Results of initial hematologic testing, biochemical analysis, and fecal examination were unremarkable, and clinical signs did not resolve with supportive care and management changes. Results of echocardiography, based on auscultation of a murmur, and coelomic endoscopy, based on the presence of a soft tissue opacity on radiographs, as well as an aspergillosis panel were largely unsuccessful in determining a definitive diagnosis. Euthanasia was performed after the eagle did not recover f

OBJECTIVES: (1) To define patient demographics and common symptoms in patients who undergo styloidectomy for stylohyoid pain syndrome (Eagle's syndrome). (2) To evaluate the effectiveness of styloidectomy in reducing symptoms of Eagle's syndrome.
METHODS: Retrospective chart review and prospective case series. We retrospectively gathered demographic data on all patients at a single institution who underwent styloidectomy during a 5-year period. Using a patient symptom survey, we also gathered prospective data on a cohort of these patients presenting during the second half of the timeframe.

Eagle syndrome, defined "stylalgia," occurs when an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament causes dysphagia, facial pain recurrent throat pain or foreign body sensation, also associated symptoms such as neck or throat pain with radiation to the ear. The symptoms related to this condition can be confused or misdiagnosed to a wide variety of facial neuralgias. The incidence of Eagle syndrome varies among population. Usually asymptomatic, it occurs in adult patients, and can be diagnosed by physical examination and radiologically. A 30-year-old male patient presented to the ma

Background There are only four previous pediatric reports of the glossopharyngeal neuralgic form of the stylohyoid complex syndrome. Stylohyoid complex has merely been described as cases of glossopharyngeal neuralgia in children. Case Report A 12-year-old boy came to our hospital because of recurrent episodes of severe cranial pain (9/10) lasting for 5 to 15 minutes. Pain affected the right tonsillar fossa, ear, and mastoid region. Since the start at the age of 9 years, the frequency of painful episodes has progressively increased: when admitted to our clinics 3 years later, the child was havi

Eagle's syndrome is a rare condition associated with the temporal styloid process hypertrophy (Eagle, 1937). It is in most cases asymptomatic, but may be accompanied by dysphagia, pharyngeal or head and neck pain due to neurovascular structure compression. The current study aims to present and discuss the etiology of a possible case of Eagle's syndrome from an Italian ossuary. Skull OC 002/08 shows a unilateral hypertrophic styloid process (48 mm long; 5-7 mm thick). Areas of remodel-ed periosteal swelling are visible at the stylohyoid and stylopharyngeus muscles' insertion, along with evidenc

Eagle syndrome (symptoms associated with an elongated styloid process (SP)) is commonly divided into two presentations. First, the so-called classic Eagle syndrome where patients can present with unilateral sore throat, dysphagia, tinnitus, unilateral facial and neck pain and otalgia. Second, there is the vascular or stylocarotid form of Eagle syndrome in which the elongated SP is in contact with the extracranial internal carotid artery. We describe two cases of internal carotid artery dissection associated with an elongated SP. One is a patient with ischaemic stroke and another with transient

Eagle's syndrome is a symptomatic abnormal length of the styloid process and/or a calcification of the stylohyoid ligament. Diagnosis is based on common pharyngeal symptoms and is confirmed by radiologic examination, more particularly CT-scan. Medical and surgical treatments are described. Medical treatment consists in repeated local anaesthetics, steroid infiltration or analgesics administration. It is purely symptomatic and has no long-term effectiveness. Surgical treatment remains the treatment of choice and consists of removal of the abnormal process. Both transoral and external approaches

BACKGROUND: Anecdotal accounts of sensory hypersensitivity in individuals with autism spectrum conditions (ASC) have been noted since the first reports of the condition. Over time, empirical evidence has supported the notion that those with ASC have superior visual abilities compared with control subjects. However, it remains unclear whether these abilities are specifically the result of differences in sensory thresholds (low-level processing), rather than higher-level cognitive processes.
METHODS: This study investigates visual threshold in n = 15 individuals with ASC and n = 15 individuals

We report a case of an adult woman with an Eagle's Syndrome (ES) treated with medical therapy. ES is characterized by an aspecific orofacial pain secondary to calcification of the stylohyoid ligament or elongated styoid process. In about 4% of general population an elongated styloid process occurs, while only about 4% of these patients are symptomatic. We report a case of a 49-year-old lady with a 1-year history of oro-pharyngeal foreign body sensation localized at the left tonsillar fossa, associated with a dull intermittent pain. A bony projection was palpable with bimanual transoral explora

A 4.5-kg, adult bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was presented after being found unable to fly. Crepitus was palpated in the left shoulder; however, the wing position was normal. Radiographs revealed caudoventral luxation of the left coracoid, affecting its distal articulation with the clavicle and its proximal articulation with the sternum. The luxation affecting the coracoid-sternum articulation was repaired by using a 4-hole, 1.5-mm T-plate and a 6-hole, 2.0-mm dynamic compression plate (DCP) placed side by side. The luxation affecting the coracoid and the clavicle was repaired by 2 ce

Eagle syndrome is defined as the constellation of signs and symptoms caused by an elongated styloid process or calcification of the stylohyoid ligament. It is a rare condition that occurs secondary to irritation or compression of surrounding structures due to the abnormal styloid process. Clinical manifestations are variable and may include neck pain, dysphagia, odynophagia, and a foreign body sensation. Although neck pain is a common and significant problem in the outpatient setting, Eagle syndrome is an exceedingly rare cause that is not often considered in the differential diagnosis of cerv
