OBJECTIVE: Here we trained an automatic phenotype assessment tool to recognize syndromic ears in two syndromes in fetuses-=CHARGE and Mandibulo-Facial Dysostosis Guion Almeida type (MFDGA)-versus controls.
METHOD: We trained an automatic model on all profile pictures of children diagnosed with genetically confirmed MFDGA and CHARGE syndromes, and a cohort of control patients, collected from 1981 to 2023 in Necker Hospital (Paris) with a visible external ear. The model consisted in extracting landmarks from photographs of external ears, in applying geometric morphometry methods, and in a class

Branchial cleft anomalies are the second most common congenital head and neck lesions in children. The first congenital head and neck lesion is thyroglossal duct cysts. First branchial cleft anomalies are rare congenital head and neck malformations (8 % of branchial cleft anomalies). The initial clinical manifestation was recurrent infections and/ or discharge in auricular, periauricular, parotid or upper neck regions. These anomalies are extremely rare and other associated facial malformations were described. The computed tomography and magnetic resonance can help the diagnosis. The antibioti

We report a family with inner ear lateral semicircular canal (LSC) malformation and external and middle ear abnormalities. The family had no history of known syndromes or toxic exposures. Distinct phenotypic manifestations were found in three family members. A young girl exhibited bilateral LSC malformation with a right-sided preauricular tag, a mildly deformed auricle, a stenotic external auditory canal, and a constricted middle ear cavity. She had moderate conductive hearing loss in the right ear but normal hearing in the left ear. Her younger brother exhibited right-sided LSC malformation,

This study investigated the relationship between external and middle ear factors and hearing screening results by automated auditory brain stem response (ABR) and transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAEs). The ears of 200 healthy newborns aged 5 to 48 hours underwent screening by ABR and EOAE, followed by otoscopic examination. The pass rates for ABR and EOAE were 91% and 58.5%, respectively. On otoscopic examination, 28% (112/400) ears had occluding vernix obscuring the view of the tympanic membrane. Cleaning of vernix was successfully performed in all but 2 ears that had occluding verni

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a neoplastic disease characterised by the deposition of granulomatous lesions in various tissues in the body. LCH of the lateral skull base commonly presents with scalp lesions, post-auricular lesions, otalgia and persistent ear infections. A toddler was brought to the ENT clinic with persistent left ear canal granulation tissue and bloody and malodorous discharge. After failed medical treatment with antibiotic and steroid topical drops. The ear was examined under general anaesthesia. Large friable granulation tissue was seen obstructing the external audi

OBJECTIVE: Today, antibiotic resistance is increasing and evolving into an important health problem. Therefore, it is important to research on alternative therapies to antibiotics. This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effect of four garlic derivatives on microorganisms commonly isolated in ear infections.
METHODS: The antimicrobial activities of allicin, s-allyl cysteine (SAC), diallyl disulfide (DADS), and s-allyl mercaptocysteine (SAMC) were investigated on standard strains of commonly isolated microorganisms using the broth microdilution method. The test strains were selected amo

Photon-counting CT (PCT) allows for improved spatial and contrast resolution compared with traditional energy-integrating detector CT. PCT offers markedly improved visualization of previously described structures, as well as those that were previously beyond the resolution of imaging. Although the anatomic details of the external ear and middle ear structures have been described previously, the rich detail of these structures has not been comprehensively reviewed in the radiology literature. The microarchitecture of the middle ear ossicles and bony protuberances are particularly well visualize

BACKGROUND: Auricular acupuncture (AA) is commonly used by acupuncturists as stand-alone therapy or as an adjunctive to body acupuncture. AA is considered to be safe, with rare complications. The most commonly reported complications are usually transient and include: pain at insertion; minor bleeding; local tenderness; dizziness; and nausea. No reported cases of an Aiguille Semi-Permanente® (ASP®) needle retained in the external auditory canal (EAC) has been found in the medical literature.
CASE: As part of a treatment for complex regional pain syndrome, auricular ASP needles were placed. Whe

INTRODUCTION: Mandibulo-Facial Dysostosis with Microcephaly (MFDM) is a rare disease with a broad spectrum of symptoms, characterized by zygomatic and mandibular hypoplasia, microcephaly, and ear abnormalities. Here, we aimed at describing the external ear phenotype of MFDM patients, and train an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based model to differentiate MFDM ears from non-syndromic control ears (binary classification), and from ears of the main differential diagnoses of this condition (multi-class classification): Treacher Collins (TC), Nager (NAFD) and CHARGE syndromes.
METHODS: The training

During the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing masks to prevent the spread of infection has been imperative. Though many wear N-95 masks with circumferential head straps, the use of surgical ear loop-style masks has increased. Dermatologic complications, such as contact dermatitis, psoriasis, and local irritation, have been described in several reports. One such complication has been pressure injury to the external ear, secondary to friction from the ear loops. While external ear pressure ulcers caused by mask-wearing have already been observed, injuries extensive enough to require surgical reconstruct

Microtia is a congenital malformation of the external ear that can lead to conductive hearing impairment. In this study, we investigated the role of the Prkra gene in external ear development. We used advanced sequencing techniques to evaluate the differential expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) involved in external ear development in mouse embryos after point mutation in the Prkra gene. The Prkra Little ear mouse model was used to obtain mouse embryos at the E15.5 and E17.5 developmental stages, and changes in miRNA expression profiles were detected. OBJECTIVE: To determine azithromycin concentration in severely inflamed canine external ear canals.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five dogs of various breeds and ages with severe and chronic otitis externa underwent ear canal reconstruction surgery. A single oral dose of azithromycin at 10 mg/kg was administered 12 to 24 hours prior to surgery. Tissue samples were collected from the excised external ear canals and azithromycin concentration was determined using a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method.
RESULTS: Azithromycin concentrations ranging from 11.4 to 107.0 μg/g (mean 59.2 ± 4

BACKGROUND: Patients with Treacher-Collins syndrome (TCS) are frequently affected by congenital ear deformities. The external ear in patients with TCS tends to have both abnormal morphology and reduced overall volume. Previous studies considered a correlation exists between TCS mandibular skeletal features and external ear volume. The purpose of this study was to assess the external ear volume in patients with TCS 3-dimensionally. Furthermore, this study evaluated the relationship between mandibular morphology, external ear profile, and external ear volume.
METHODS: A total of 36 nonoperated

BACKGROUND: External auditory canal exostoses are known to occur in patients who engage in cold-water sports. Although the majority of patients with exostosis remain asymptomatic, larger lesions can cause wax impaction, conductive hearing loss and predispose to recurrent otitis externa.
OBJECTIVE: A novel technique is described of using a piezo saw to excise exostoses that are symptomatic. The piezo saw is used to perform various procedures, but its use in removing exostoses has not been described in the literature.
CONCLUSION: Excision of exostoses of the ear canal using a piezo saw is a sa
