Patterns of ear disease in the southwestern American Indian.

Native Americans are predisposed to one of the highest incidences of otitis media in mankind. The origin of otitis media in Indians remains multifaceted. However, an unusually high prevalence of congenital anomalies of the ear and oral cavity, ie, oral clefts, facial paralysis in diabetics, and the absence of otosclerosis, suggest racial inheritance as a predominant factor for their pattern or ear disease. An analysis of outpatient and operative records at the Phoenix (Ariz) Indian Medical Center substantiates this hypothesis and shows contrasts in ear disease between American Indians and whit

Middle ear effusions -- complications of disease and treatment.

The results of treatment of secretory otitis media with commonly found disease in Finland is described. Treatment includes adenoidectomy and/or insertion of tympanostomy tubes with mastoidectomy in selected cases. Tympanostomy tube treatment results in an increased amount of visible tympanic membrane scar formation and tympanosclerosis, but these are of no major functional importance. In about 10 per cent of the glue ears a mastoid disease process complicates the disease. Here thorough mastoidectomy at an early stage is the treatment of choice. Cholesteatoma formation appears in about two per

Topical Delivery of Elastic Liposomal Vesicles for Treatment of Middle and Inner Ear Diseases.

We present a topical drug delivery mechanism through the ear canal to the middle and inner ear using liposomal nanoparticles without disrupting the integrity of the tympanic membrane. The current delivery method provides a noninvasive and safer alternative to transtympanic membrane injections, ear tubes followed by ear drops administration, and systemic drug formulations. We investigate the capability of liposomal NPs, particularly transfersomes (TLipo), used as drug delivery vesicles to penetrate the tympanic membrane (TM) and round window membrane (RWM) with high affinity, specificity, and r

Association of smoking or tobacco use with ear diseases among men: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Health related behaviour specially smoking and tobacco in any form are major determinants of health and lead to health inequities. Tobacco leads to various health problems including ear, nose and throat diseases. OBJECTIVE: To determine the influence of smoking or tobacco use on ear diseases we performed a retrospective study among men. METHOD: Of 11454 subjects of different age-groups there were 4143 men aged 20-60 years who were evaluated for demographic variables, smoking/tobacco use and middle and internal ear diseases. Descriptive statistics and age adjusted logistic regress

Ear diseases and other risk factors for hearing impairment among adults: an epidemiological study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of ear diseases, other otological risk factors potentially affecting hearing, and noise exposure among adults. Furthermore, subject-related factors possibly associated with hearing impairment (HI), i.e. handedness, eye color, and susceptibility to sunburn, were studied. DESIGN: A cross-sectional, unscreened, population-based, epidemiological study among adults. STUDY SAMPLE: The subjects (n = 850), aged 54-66 years, were randomly sampled from the population register. A questionnaire survey, an otological examination, and pure-tone audiometry were perf

[The role of Haemophilus influenzae in pyoinflammatory diseases of the ear and paranasal sinuses].

We studied the role of Haemophilus influenzae in ENT inflammation in children, in purulent otitis and rhinosinusitis in particular, basing on the results of microbiological investigations of microflora. Examination of 59 patients aged 3 months to 17 years (39 patients with otitis media purulenta and 20 patients with chronic rhinosinusitis) has established that main pathogens in these diseases are streptococci, H. influenzae (HI) and M. catarrhalis. HI is a frequent associated microorganism in children of Uzbekistan. It occurs in 22% patients with acute otitis media purulenta and in 25% patient

Clinical applicability of the sweep frequency measuring apparatus for diagnosis of middle ear diseases.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a measuring apparatus that has the ability to sweep both frequency and external auditory meatus static pressure and can display measurement results in a three-dimensional expression. To measure the middle ear dynamic characteristics of normal-hearing subjects and of patients with this apparatus. DESIGN: Investigate 275 ears of 153 normal-hearing subjects and 72 ears with middle ear diseases. RESULTS: The measurement results show fairly distinctive patterns depending on the middle ear conditions, i.e., normal, ossicular chain separation, ossicular chain fixation, secreto

Role of pneumatic otoscopy in the evaluation of tympanic membrane and middle ear diseases.

Many middle ear diseases show visible changes on the tympanic membrane which can be identified with pneumatic otoscopy. With practice and patience the technique can be easily performed even on infants and very young children and can reveal what may guide therapeutic approach. Careful positioning of the patient and proper insertion of a fitting ear speculum are of paramount importance. Mobility of the tympanic membrane may be absent in certain conditions and decreased or increased in other conditions. White masses are sometimes observed in the tympanic membrane or in the middle ear. These may b

Global burden of hearing impairment and ear disease.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss can present at birth or be acquired as a result of illness, middle-ear disease, injury, age, overuse of certain medications, and/or induced by exposure to damaging noise levels. There are serious short-term consequences for people living with hearing impairment, including the effects on language acquisition, education, employment and overall wellbeing. There are also complex long-term implications. OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to present some of the leading causes of ear disease and hearing loss globally, and to identify their impact at both an individual and societa

The Role of the Eustachian Tube in Middle Ear Disease.

The Eustachian tube is a complex structure connecting the middle ear to the nasopharynx that contributes to the normal function of the middle ear. Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) is thought to contribute to the majority of middle ear pathology, although the mechanisms and the degree to which it contributes to middle ear disease is poorly understood. We describe the anatomy and physiology of the Eustachian tube, define ETD, discuss the methods for measuring ETD and describe recent advances in treatment.

Clinical manifestations of hydropic ear disease (Menière's).

INTRODUCTION: Hydropic ear disease, initially described by and named after Prosper Menière, is one of the most frequent vertigo disorders and one of the most frequent inner ear disorders. It is the syndrome of endolymphatic hydrops which until 2007 could be diagnostically confirmed only by post-mortem histology. In the past, various attempts to formulate clinical diagnostic criteria have been undertaken but were hampered by the inability to ascertain the diagnosis in living patients. With the milestone achievement of endolymphatic hydrops imaging, today the pathology can be ascertained. In thi

[Hydropic inner ear disease of the vestibular type].

We report the case of a patient with episodic rotational vertigo for years. Ear symptoms were negated. The clinical diagnosis was not clear - Menière's disease, vestibular migraine and recurrent vertigo after vestibular neuritis all qualified for differential diagnoses. A locally enhanced inner-ear MRI established clarity by showing an endolymphatic hydrops in the vestibulum. Besides the classical triad of Menière's disease there are other clinical appearances of endolymphatic hydrops, which can be visualized with inner-ear MRI.

Cogan's syndrome: an autoimmune inner ear disease.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of our study was to review our current knowledge of the aetiopathogenesis of Cogan's syndrome, including viral infection and autoimmunity, and to discuss disease pathogenesis with relevance to pharmacotherapy. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW METHODOLOGY: Relevant publications on the aetiopathogenesis and pharmacotherapy of Cogan's syndrome from 1945 to 2012 were analysed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Cogan's syndrome is a rare autoimmune vasculitis, and its pathogenesis is unknown. Infection, but primarily autoimmunity, may play contributing roles in the pathogenesis of this disease.

[Castleman's disease in ear, nose, and throat practice].

Castleman's disease, also called angiofollicular lymph node hyperplasia or benign giant lymphoma, is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown etiology. Three histologic subtypes are described--hyaline vascular (80-90%), plasma cell (10-20%), and mixed (rare). In the clinical setting, localized and multicentric entities are distinguished. Due to the lack of tumor-specific clinical, biochemical, and radiological features, final diagnosis of Castleman's disease depends on histopathology. Surgical tumor resection is the treatment of choice for localized disease. Prognosis is good, and adjuva
