In most cases, while schwannoma is sporadically manifested as a single benign neoplasm, the presence of multiple schwannomas in one patient is usually indicative of neurofibromatosis 2. However, several recent reports have suggested that schwannomatosis itself may also be a distinct clinical entity. This study examines an extremely rare case of probable schwannomatosis associated with intracranial, intraspinal and peripheral involvements. A 63-year-old woman presented with a seven-year history of palpable lumps on both sides of the supraclavicular area and hearing impairment in both ears. On p

BACKGROUND: Patients with end-stage heart failure refractory to medication can be treated with a heart transplant (HTx). These patients are subjected to a preoperative screening procedure according to International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation guidelines. Additionally, in our hospital, a routine ear, nose, and throat (ENT) screening is performed, directed toward the identification of asymptomatic infections and head and neck neoplasms. There are no studies demonstrating that this screening has additional value in these patients.
METHODS: To investigate the yield of protocolled E

The patient presented to the ear, nose and throat clinic with failed conservative treatment of persistent right otitis externa. On examination, the roof of the right ear canal was polypoid and the tympanic membrane could not be visualised. There was a fragile mass noted in the external auditory canal (EAC) which on microsuction started to bleed. CT internal auditory meatus and MRI internal auditory meatus identified soft tissue mass in the EAC. The patient underwent urgent examination under anaesthetic of the ear and biopsies were taken. He had a background of ascending colon cancer; Duke's C1

BACKGROUND: Primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the middle ear is rare, with non-keratinizing basaloid types being exceptionally uncommon. Distinguishing these cancers, often caused by viral factors (e.g., human papillomavirus or Epstein-Barr virus), or specific genetic alterations (e.g., bromodomain-containing protein 4-nuclear protein in testis fusion gene or Ewing sarcoma breakpoint region 1 gene fused with FLI chromosomal rearrangement), from other cranial conditions, is difficult. The recently identified DEK::AFF2 non-keratinizing SCC (NKSCC) is a novel subtype, fitting the World Hea

We examined the impact of total body irradiation (TBI) dose and fractionation on risk of subsequent malignant neoplasms (SMNs) in the era of reduced-intensity and nonmyeloablative conditioning regimens for hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Among 4905 1-year survivors of allogeneic HCT for hematologic malignancies (N = 4500) or nonmalignant disorders (N = 405) who received transplants between 1969 and 2014, we identified 581 SMNs (excluding squamous and basal cell of skin) in 499 individuals. With a median length of follow-up of 12.5 years, the cumulative incidence of SMNs by 30 years a

BACKGROUND: A vascular neoplasm linked to HHV-8 infection, Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is common in immunocompromised patients, notably people living with HIV. Isolated external ear involvement is uncommon and may present clinically as keloids, cysts, or infections.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old man presented with a one-month history of ipsilateral dacryocystitis and a rapidly growing, painful right auricular mass. The auricular lesion was initially presumed to be a sebaceous cyst during his emergency room evaluation, with actively draining purulent material. Labs showed severe pancytopenia with a

Trauma and tumor are the causes of acquired ear defects that surgeons are frequently called on to treat. Trauma may result in hematoma or laceration of the ear. In addition, both trauma and tumor excision may result in skin or cartilage loss. Prevention of recurrence depends on complete excision of the tumor m both lateral margins and depth. Tumors of the ear (as well as the nose) are often incompletely excised because of the difficulty in reconstruction. The absence of subcutaneous tissue in the ear allows fixation and perichondrial involvement to occur early. The tumor affinity for perichond

Cutaneous and mucocutaneous plasmacytoma (PCT) is a common neoplasm of dogs. Tumors can be single or multiple and occur predominantly in the oral cavity, lip, ears, digits, and trunk. Although these tumors typically offer no diagnostic challenge for the pathologist, subsets of PCTs with atypical morphologic configurations may make differentiation from other neoplasms difficult. We describe 6 cases of canine cutaneous and mucocutaneous PCT with pseudoglandular arrangement of neoplastic cells. The mean age of affected dogs was 11.3 y, and multiple breeds and sites were affected. Histologically,

BACKGROUND: Xanthogranuloma, also known as cholesterol granuloma, is an extremely rare intracranial neoplasm most commonly located in the middle ear, petrous apex, or choroid plexus. Exclusively suprasellar xanthogranulomas are exceptional and this report presents a very rare case in the pediatric population, particularly unique due to the presence of calcification.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 17-year-old girl presented with primary amenorrhea with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showing a large calcified enhancing suprasellar mass, which was presumptively diagnosed as a craniophar

Coexisting (collision) cutaneous neoplasms of various types and combinations are well documented but relatively uncommon. This report describes the unusual occurrence of a malignant melanoma in situ (MMIS) colonizing a basal cell carcinoma (BCC). A 69-year-old man was considered clinically to have a melanocytic neoplasm or a pigmented BCC of the right ear. Biopsy showed an MMIS, lentigo maligna type, juxtaposed to a typical BCC. The MMIS extended peripherally and into the BCC. Interspersed among the basaloid epithelial cell aggregates that extended 1.70 mm into the dermis were atypical melanoc

A rare pediatric case report of middle ear neuroendocrine tumor and review of the pediatric cases reported in the literature. A 16-year-old female showed a lesion occupying the posterosuperior part of the medial third of the right external auditory canal confirmed by computed tomography scan, without clear evidence of bone erosion. The patient underwent canal wall tympanoplasty in 1 stage. No residual pathology was present after 1 month, 3-6 months, and after 1 year. There are few known pediatric cases of this disease, there is no statistically significant data for this population regarding th

Granulocytic sarcoma (GS) is an extramedullary accumulation of proliferating myeloblasts, most commonly seen in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) but rarely associated with chronic myeloid leukemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, or myeloproliferative neoplasms. The skin is the most frequent site of extramedullary relapse, followed by the mediastinum, gingiva, ear, lymph nodes, central nervous system, and testis. We report a case of a 38-year-old female who presented to our clinic with abnormal vaginal bleeding. She had a history of bone marrow transplantation 5 years ago for AML. Based o

Eustachian tube (ET) primary tumors and tumor-like lesions are rare diseases presenting with common ear, nose and throat symptoms. Pathology can range from developmental anomalies to high malignant neoplasms. Hence this review aimed at suggesting a classification and outline relevant aspects of ET primary tumors and tumor-like lesions, describing clinical findings, diagnostic management and therapeutic approaches. MEDLINE, CINAHL, OVIDSP, HIGHWIRE, and GOOGLE databases were searched from inception to July 2011 for relevant studies. Further papers were identified by examining the reference list

A previously healthy middle aged man died following a 6 month illness which presented with middle ear symptoms, apparently resolved, and then 2 months later manifested as encephalitis. The illness was characterized initially by depression and intellectual deterioration. No family member or working associate was affected. The clinical diagnosis of viral encephalitis was confirmed by brain biopsy but no virus was isolated in the laboratory. Numerous intracisternal toroidal virus-like particles were demonstrated by electron microscopy in the perikarya and dendrites but not in glia. The particles

The protrusion of articular soft-tissue from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) into the external ear in the absence of trauma, neoplasm or inflammation is rare. We present below a Nigerian adult male with retrodiscal herniation of soft-tissues of the TMJ into the external auditory meatus through a persistent foramen of Huschke. We are not aware of any reports of this developmental defect or its prevalence in the Nigerian medical literature. Therefore, this case is presented to heighten the index of suspicion of physicians when managing patients with otorrhea and otalgia; which is often primari

With aging, a different variety of ear diseases becomes more common. External ear disease is often a local reflection of generalized skin problems aggravated by retained water or local manipulation. Hearing loss may be the result of long-standing middle ear disease rather than aging. In this situation, the inconveniences and possible dangers of a chronically infected ear may be resolved with surgical intervention. Nasopharyngeal or lymphomatous disease must be suspected in any geriatric patient manifesting middle ear disease for the first time. Like presbyopia, presbycusis is a normal conseque
