[The Role of Nurses in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals].

The sustainable development goals (SDGs), announced by the United Nations in 2016, now help guide public policy in many nations around the world. The United Nations has appealed to all governments and citizens worldwide to align together, taking action in each of the SDG dimensions of people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership in order to eradicate extreme poverty, inequality, and injustice; to slow / stop climate change; and to ensure sustainable development for humanity and the earth. Nursing is critical to achieving SDG3 (Health and Welfare) and has a significant impact on each of t

Vibrio Infections and the Twenty-First Century.

The Vibrionaceae is a highly diverse family of aquatic bacteria. Some members of this ubiquitous group can cause a variety of diseases in humans ranging from cholera caused by Vibrio cholerae, severe septicemia caused by Vibrio vulnificus, to acute gastroenteritis by Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Planet Earth is experiencing unprecedented changes of planetary scale associated with climate change. These environmental perturbations paired with overpopulation and pollution are increasing the distribution of pathogenic Vibrios and exacerbating the risk of causing infections. In this chapter, we discuss

Thermal Decomposition and Prebiotic Formation of Adenosine Phosphates in Simulated Early-Earth Evaporative Settings.

Adenosine nucleotides and polyphosphates play a significant role in biochemistry, from participating in the formation of genetic material to serving as metabolic energy currency. In this study, we examine the stability and decomposition rates of adenosine phosphates-5'-AMP, 5'-ADP, and 5'-ATP (mentioned simply as AMP, ADP and ATP hereafter)-at temperatures of 22-25 °C, 50-55 °C, 70-75 °C, and 85-90 °C, at a pH of 4, over periods of 2 and 4 days, in both saltwater and ultrapure water, under unsealed and completely dried down conditions. We found that adenosine phosphates degrade rapidly under h

Temporal variation of planetary iron as a driver of evolution.

Iron is an irreplaceable component of proteins and enzyme systems required for life. This need for iron is a well-characterized evolutionary mechanism for genetic selection. However, there is limited consideration of how iron bioavailability, initially determined by planetary accretion but fluctuating considerably at global scale over geological time frames, has shaped the biosphere. We describe influences of iron on planetary habitability from formation events >4 Gya and initiation of biochemistry from geochemistry through oxygenation of the atmosphere to current host-pathogen dynamics. VUV electronic state spectroscopy of 1,1-difluoroethene and difluorochloromethane by high resolution synchrotron radiation.

High resolution VUV photoabsorption spectra of 1,1-difluoroethene (C(2)H(2)F(2)) and difluorochloromethane (CF(2)HCl) are reported in the wavelength range 115-200 nm (10.8-6.2 eV). New photoabsorption features are observed in C(2)H(2)F(2) and some Rydberg and vibrational assignments are proposed for the first time. Evidence for a weak vibrational pattern in CF(2)HCl is discussed here for the first time. Absolute cross section values have been obtained allowing photolysis lifetimes to be derived in the Earth's troposphere and stratosphere.

Small scale structure in the atmosphere: implications for chemical composition and observational methods.

Non-linearities in chemical processes are recognised as being important in a number of areas of atmospheric science. In this paper we show simulations using an idealised plume model which describes the relaxation of an urban plume into the background atmosphere. As might be anticipated, the initial conditions of NOx, O3 and VOCs within the plume and background are important in determining the chemistry downstream of the source, but crucially for this study, the rate of mixing (on timescales appropriate to the real atmosphere) is found to alter the composition of the atmosphere significantly. FLUKA investigations of the applicability of pure propane gas for TEPC-based microdosimetry of space radiation in low Earth orbit.

Tissue-equivalent proportional counter (TEPC) filled with tissue-equivalent propane (TEP) gas is the standard choice for microdosimetric studies. However, pure propane (PP) gas serves as an effective alternative for long-duration space missions due to its superior compositional stability. This study addresses the applicability of PP gas for the microdosimetry of space radiation using the FLUKA Monte Carlo code. Towards this goal, microdosimetric distributions and total energy deposited in the TEPC cavity filled with PP and TEP gases are calculated at 1μm site size, for GCR ions, trapped proton

Rise to modern levels of ocean oxygenation coincided with the Cambrian radiation of animals.

The early diversification of animals (∼ 630 Ma), and their development into both motile and macroscopic forms (∼ 575-565 Ma), has been linked to stepwise increases in the oxygenation of Earth's surface environment. However, establishing such a linkage between oxygen and evolution for the later Cambrian 'explosion' (540-520 Ma) of new, energy-sapping body plans and behaviours has proved more elusive. Here we present new molybdenum isotope data, which demonstrate that the areal extent of oxygenated bottom waters increased in step with the early Cambrian bioradiation of animals and eukaryotic phy

The role of biology in planetary evolution: cyanobacterial primary production in low-oxygen Proterozoic oceans.

Understanding the role of biology in planetary evolution remains an outstanding challenge to geobiologists. Progress towards unravelling this puzzle for Earth is hindered by the scarcity of well-preserved rocks from the Archean (4.0 to 2.5 Gyr ago) and Proterozoic (2.5 to 0.5 Gyr ago) Eons. In addition, the microscopic life that dominated Earth's biota for most of its history left a poor fossil record, consisting primarily of lithified microbial mats, rare microbial body fossils and membrane-derived hydrocarbon molecules that are still challenging to interpret. However, it is clear from the su

Living nanovesicles--chemical and physical survival strategies of primordial biosystems.

Life on Earth and Mars could have started with self-assembled nanovesicles similar to the present nanobacteria (NB). To resist extreme environmental stress situations and periods of nutritional deprivation, nanovesicles would have had a chemical composition protected by a closed mineralized compartment, facilitating their development in a primordial soup, or other early wet environment. Their survivability would have been enhanced if they had mechanisms for metabolic communication, and an ability to collect primordially available energy forms. Here, we establish an irreducible model system for

Lightning-Driven Pyrite Oxidation Under Archean Atmosphere Conditions.

Oxidative weathering is a major source of bio-essential micronutrients on Earth today; however, this flux would have been muted on the early Earth or on Mars, where atmospheric O2(g) levels were very low. Here, we explore the hypothesis that nitrogen oxides generated by lightning in an anoxic atmosphere could have elevated pyrite oxidation levels under otherwise anoxic conditions. We performed spark discharge experiments in the presence of pyrite powder and three different gas mixtures, including 80% N2(g) with 20% CO2(g), 95% N2(g) with 5% CO2(g), and modern air. Experiments were run for 30 m

Protein Intrinsic Disorder and Adaptation to Extreme Environments: Resilience of Chaos.

Extremophiles are organisms adapted not only to survive in harsh conditions but thrive in environments considered extreme or uninhabitable by most life forms. They serve as a living reflection of a popular motto "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and show that life on Earth is spread well outside the human-centric comfort zone. In fact, extremophiles, being found in deep crustal and oceanic depths, outer space, highly acidic and basic conditions, extreme temperatures (+122 °C to -20 °C), and in the presence of toxins and high radiation, demonstrate life's remarkable adaptability. Earth encounters as the origin of fresh surfaces on near-Earth asteroids.

Telescopic measurements of asteroids' colours rarely match laboratory reflectance spectra of meteorites owing to a 'space weathering' process that rapidly reddens asteroid surfaces in less than 10(6) years. 'Unweathered' asteroids (those having spectra matching the most commonly falling ordinary chondrite meteorites), however, are seen among small bodies the orbits of which cross inside Mars and the Earth. Various explanations have been proposed for the origin of these fresh surface colours, ranging from collisions to planetary encounters. Less reddened asteroids seem to cross most deeply into

Climate Change and the Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases in the United States.

The earth is rapidly warming, driven by increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide and other gases that result primarily from fossil fuel combustion. In addition to causing arctic ice melting and extreme weather events, climatologic factors are linked strongly to the transmission of many infectious diseases. Changes in the prevalence of infectious diseases not only reflect the impacts of temperature, humidity, and other weather-related phenomena on pathogens, vectors, and animal hosts but are also part of a complex of social and environmental factors that will be affected by climate change, includi

Demonstration of charge-hold-vent (CHV) and no-vent-fill (NVF) in a simulated propellent storage tank during tank-to-tank cryogen transfer in microgravity.

The space exploration from a low earth orbit to a high earth orbit, then to Moon, Mars, and possibly asteroids and moons of other planets is one of the biggest challenges for scientists and engineers for the new millennium. The enabling of in-space cryogenic rocket engines and the Lower-Earth-Orbit (LEO) cryogenic fuel depots for these future manned and robotic space exploration missions begins with the technology development of advanced cryogenic thermal-fluid management systems for the propellant transfer line and storage tank system. One of the key thermal-fluid management operations is the

Present cum future of SARS-CoV-2 virus and its associated control of virus-laden air pollutants leading to potential environmental threat - A global review.

The world is presently infected by the biological fever of COVID-19 caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus. The present study is mainly related to the airborne transmission of novel coronavirus through airway. Similarly, our mother planet is suffering from drastic effects of air pollution. There are sufficient probabilities or evidences proven for contagious virus transmission through polluted airborne-pathway in formed aerosol molecules. The pathways and sources of spread are detailed along with the best possible green control technologies or ideas to hinder further transmission. The combined effects of

The Origin of the Feedstock Molecules for Life on the Hadean Earth.

The origin of life in the Hadean eon required the formation of amino acids and nucleosides among the key molecules of life. It is assumed that highly unsaturated carbon and nitrogen containing feedstock molecules, which form in a strongly reducing H2-atmosphere were the reactive starting materials. The Hadean Earth was, however, surrounded by a CO2-dominated atmosphere and the question of how under such inert conditions the biomolecules could have formed is unsolved. Here, we report that HNO and formaldehyde, which form robustly in a weakly reducing atmosphere by lightning and UV-irradiation,

Upper mantle structure of Mars from InSight seismic data.

For 2 years, the InSight lander has been recording seismic data on Mars that are vital to constrain the structure and thermochemical state of the planet. We used observations of direct (P and S) and surface-reflected (PP, PPP, SS, and SSS) body-wave phases from eight low-frequency marsquakes to constrain the interior structure to a depth of 800 kilometers. We found a structure compatible with a low-velocity zone associated with a thermal lithosphere much thicker than on Earth that is possibly related to a weak S-wave shadow zone at teleseismic distances. By combining the seismic constraints wi

Histoplasmosis duboisii (African histoplasmosis). An African case reported from Chile with ultrastructural study.

A case of histoplasmosis duboisii in a 30 year-old engineer is presented. The diagnosis was made with the help of light microscopy, electron microscopy and cultures. Although diagnosed in Chile, the patient probably acquired the disease in the endemic African area, more precisely in the Ivory Coast. Differential diagnosis between Histoplasma capsulatum var. capsulatum and Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii is based primarily on the larger in-vivo yeast form size of the latter. Electron microscopy study, the first done on the duboisii variety of Histoplasma capsulatum in human material to our

Comparative analysis of anti-polyglutamine Fab crystals grown on Earth and in microgravity.

Huntington's disease is one of nine neurodegenerative diseases caused by a polyglutamine (polyQ)-repeat expansion. An anti-polyQ antigen-binding fragment, MW1 Fab, was crystallized both on Earth and on the International Space Station, a microgravity environment where convection is limited. Once the crystals returned to Earth, the number, size and morphology of all crystals were recorded, and X-ray data were collected from representative crystals. The results generally agreed with previous microgravity crystallization studies. On average, microgravity-grown crystals were 20% larger than control
