The neural representation of the dolphin broadband biosonar click was investigated by measuring auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to "self-heard" clicks masked with noise bursts having various high-pass cutoff frequencies. Narrowband ABRs were obtained by sequentially subtracting responses obtained with noise having lower high-pass cutoff frequencies from those obtained with noise having higher cutoff frequencies. For comparison to the biosonar data, ABRs were also measured in a passive listening experiment, where external clicks and masking noise were presented to the dolphins and narrowban

Active sensing in biological system consists of emitting/receiving a periodic signal to explore the environment. The signal can be emitted toward distant objects, as in echolocation, or in direct contact with the object, for example, whisking in rodents. We explored the hypothesis that a similar mechanism exists in humans. Humans generate periodic signals at ~10 Hz during voluntary finger movements, which reflects a pulsatile motor command in the central nervous system. In the present study, we tested whether the ~10-Hz signal persists during the active exploration of textures and whether the

Cochlear microphonic (CM) and evoked neural (N-1) potentials were studied in two species of Doppler shift compensating bats with the aid of electrodes chronically implanted in the scala tympani. Potentials were recorded from animals fully recovered from the effects of anesthesia and surgery. In Pteronotus p. parnellii and Rhinolophus rouxi the CM amplitude showed a narrow band, high amplitude peak at a frequency about 200 Hz above the resting frequency of each species. In Pteronotus the peak was 25-35 dB higher in amplitude than the general CM level below or above the frequency of the amplitud

The auditory system measures time with exceptional precision. Echolocating bats evaluate the time delay between call and echo to measure object range. An extreme and disputed result on ranging acuity was found in the virtual delay jitter experiments. In these studies, echoes with alternating delays were played back to bats, which detected a jitter down to 10 ns, corresponding to a ranging acuity of 1.7 microm. The current study was designed to measure the ranging acuity of the nectarivorous bat Glossophaga soricina under semi-natural conditions. Three free-flying bats were trained to discrimin

Eye movements enable visual information gathering and stabilize gaze via optokinetic (OKR) and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) pathways. 1 Echolocating bats, despite their rapid and agile flight maneuvers to land upside down and navigate 3D space, have long been thought not to move their eyes, an assumption originating from Walls's influential assertion over 80 years ago 2 but never tested with empirical measurements. Here we present quantitative analysis of eye movements driven by visual and vestibular signals in Seba's short-tailed bat ( Carollia perspicillata ). Bats generated robust visually

Deviance detection describes an increase of neural response strength caused by a stimulus with a low probability of occurrence. This ubiquitous phenomenon has been reported for humans and multiple other species, from subthalamic areas to the auditory cortex. Cortical deviance detection has been well characterized by a range of studies using a variety of different stimuli, from artificial to natural, with and without a behavioral relevance. This allowed the identification of a broad variety of regularity deviations that are detected by the cortex. Moreover, subcortical deviance detection has be

A well-developed visual system can provide significant sensory information to guide motor behavior, especially in fruit-eating bats, which usually use echolocation to navigate at high speed through cluttered environments during foraging. Relatively few studies have been performed to elucidate the organization of the visual system in bats. The present work provides an extensive morphological description of the retinal projections in the subcortical visual nuclei in the flat-faced fruit-eating bat (Artibeus planirostris) using anterograde transport of the eye-injected cholera toxin B subunit (CT

The paralemniscal tegmental area has been determined in the brain of the New World moustached bat, Pteronotus p. parnellii, by electrical microstimulation eliciting echolocation calls and pinna movements. It is located in the dorsal tegmentum rostral and medial to the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus and is characterized by medium sized and large neurons. Tracer injections (WGA-HRP) showed that the most intense input to the paralemniscal tegmental area originates in the intermediate and deep layers of the homolateral superior colliculus. The strong projections from the ipsi- and contral

Echolocation represents one of the most rapid adaptive sensorimotor modulation behaviors observed in mammals, establishing bats as one of the most evolutionarily successful mammals. Bats rely on high-frequency hearing for survival, but our understanding of its cellular molecular basis is scattered and segmented. Herein, we constructed the first single-cell transcriptomic landscape of the cochlea in Hipposideros armiger, a CF-FM bat, using a PacBio-optimized genome and compared it with the results obtained from unoptimized original genomes. Sixteen distinct cell types were distributed across fi

On their dorsal surface, bat tongues show a raised muscular structure called mediodorsal lobe (MDL) or lingual prominence. It exhibits different mechanical papillae across species, which we hypothesized are linked to foraging strategies. We predicted that tall MDLs and prominent papillae pointing frontward would effectively trap prey items caught on the wing by aerial hawkers. We examined 904 high-resolution, close-up images of 239 individual bats from 24 European species, focusing on MDL height and morphology and arrangement of MDL papillae. Aerial hawkers such as Tadarida teniotis, Nyctalus

Bats are unique among mammals, possessing some of the rarest mammalian adaptations, including true self-powered flight, laryngeal echolocation, exceptional longevity, unique immunity, contracted genomes, and vocal learning. They provide key ecosystem services, pollinating tropical plants, dispersing seeds, and controlling insect pest populations, thus driving healthy ecosystems. They account for more than 20% of all living mammalian diversity, and their crown-group evolutionary history dates back to the Eocene. Despite their great numbers and diversity, many species are threatened and endanger

Hearing sensitivity, during trials in which a warning sound preceding a loud sound, was investigated in two harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena). Sensitivity was measured using pip-train test stimuli and auditory evoked potential recording. When a hearing test/warning stimulus, with a frequency of either 45 or 32 kHz, preceded a loud 32 kHz tone with a sound pressure level of 152 dB re 1 μPa root mean square, lasting 2 s yielding an sound exposure level (SEL) of 155 dB re 1 μPa(2)s, pooled hearing thresholds measured just before the loud sound increased relative to baseline thresholds. During

Cetaceans are highly adapted marine mammals whose survival depends on precise auditory and echolocation systems. Therefore, disease processes affecting these systems, including parasitic infections pose significant morbidity and may result in stranding and death. Here, we describe the pathologic and parasitological findings in an adult, male melon-headed whale (Peponocephala electra) stranded dead on the Brazilian coast. The main gross pathologic findings consisted of bilateral otitis media associated with numerous nematodes in the tympanic bullae that occluded the tympanic lumen and resulted

Changes in the diving behavior of individual free-ranging juvenile northern elephant seals, Mirounga angustirostris, exposed to the acoustic thermometry of the ocean climate (ATOC) sound source were examined using data loggers. Data loggers were attached to the animals and measured swim speed, maximum depth of dive, dive duration, surface interval, descent and ascent rate, and descent and ascent angle along with sound pressure level (SPL). The ATOC sound source was at a depth of 939 m and transmitted at 195 dB re: 1 microPa at 1 m centered at 75 Hz with a 37.5-Hz bandwidth. Sound pressure leve

Comparisons of skull shape between closely related species can provide information on the role that phylogeny and function play in cranial evolution. We used 3D-anatomical landmarks in order to study the skull ontogeny of two closely related species, Lagenorhynchus obscurus and Lagenorhynchus australis, with a total sample of 52 skulls. We found shared trends between species, such as the relative compression of the neurocranium and the enlargement of the rostrum during ontogeny. However, these are common mammalian features, associated with prenatal brain development and sensory capsules. Moreo

The ability of echolocating toothed whales to detect and classify prey at long ranges enables efficient searching and stalking of sparse prey in these time-limited dives. However, nonecholocating deep-diving seals such as elephant seals appear to have much less sensory advantage over their prey. Both elephant seals and their prey rely on visual and hydrodynamic cues that may be detectable only at short ranges in the deep ocean, leading us to hypothesize that elephant seals must adopt a less efficient reactive mode of hunting that requires high prey densities. To test that hypothesis, we deploy

Fear of predation can induce profound changes in the behaviour and physiology of prey species even if predator encounters are infrequent. For echolocating toothed whales, the use of sound to forage exposes them to detection by eavesdropping predators, but while some species exploit social defences or produce cryptic acoustic signals, deep-diving beaked whales, well known for mass-strandings induced by navy sonar, seem enigmatically defenceless against their main predator, killer whales. Here we test the hypothesis that the stereotyped group diving and vocal behaviour of beaked whales has benef

Anomalous colourations occur in many tropical vertebrates. However, they are considered rare in wild populations, with very few records for the majority of animal taxa. We report two new cases of anomalous colouration in mammals. Additionally, we compiled all published cases about anomalous pigmentation registered in Neotropical mammals, throughout a comprehensive review of peer reviewed articles between 1950 and 2010. Every record was classified as albinism, leucism, piebaldism or eventually as undetermined pigmentation. As results, we report the new record of a leucistic specimen of opossum

The acoustic mode is the most reasonable means for social animals such as dolphins to maintain contact in the underwater habitat, and has been developed since they moved to the sea. This study investigates variations in dolphin vocalizations under the following conditions in a captive environment: 1) before feeding (Pre-feeding), 2) during feeding (Feeding), 3) during free time without the presence of people (Free), 4) during interaction with people located upon a float (Float), 5) during interaction with people in the water (Water). During the experiments, a total of 2642 whistles were extrac

This study examined the output of the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus to the medial geniculate body and other parts of the nervous system in the mustached bat (Pteronotus parnellii). Small deposits of anterograde tracers (horseradish peroxidase, [3H]leucine, Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin, wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase, or biocytin) were made at physiologically defined sites in the central nucleus representing major components of the bat's echolocation signal. The topography, frequency specificity, and axonal morphology of these outputs were studied.
