Systematic review of ecological momentary assessment (EMA) studies of five public health-related behaviours: review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) involves repeated, real-time assessments of phenomena (eg, cognitions, emotions, behaviours) over a period of time in naturalistic settings. EMA is increasingly used to study both within-person and between-person processes. We will review EMA studies investigating key health behaviours and synthesise: (1) study characteristics (eg, frequency of assessments, adherence, incentives), (2) associations between psychological predictors and behaviours and (3) moderators of adherence to EMA protocols. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This review will focus on

Anger precedes and predicts nonsuicidal self-injury in veterans: Findings from an ecological momentary assessment study.

Veterans have high rates of suicide, and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is one of the strongest predictors of suicide risk; however, there is presently little known about antecedents of NSSI that might inform intervention efforts. Accumulating research suggests that anger and hostility play an important role in NSSI, but whether these emotions precede and predict NSSI is currently unknown. The aim of the current study was to examine the temporal relationships between anger/hostility and NSSI urges and behavior among veterans diagnosed with NSSI disorder. Our hypothesis was that angry/hostile a

Ecological Momentary Assessment based Differences between Android and iOS Users of the TrackYourHearing mHealth Crowdsensing Platform.

mHealth technologies are increasingly utilized in various medical contexts. Mobile crowdsensing is such a technology, which is often used for data collection scenarios related to questions on chronic disorders. One prominent reason for the latter setting is based on the fact that powerful Ecological Momentary Assessments (EMA) can be performed. Notably, when mobile crowdsensing solutions are used to integrate EMA measurements, many new challenges arise. For example, the measurements must be provided in the same way on different mobile operating systems. However, the newly given possibilities c

Negative affect and binge eating: Reconciling differences between two analytic approaches in ecological momentary assessment research.

OBJECTIVE: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) research has produced contradictory findings regarding the trajectory of negative affect after binge-eating episodes. Given the clinical implications, the objective of the current study was to reconcile these inconsistencies by comparing the two most commonly employed statistical approaches used to analyze these data. METHOD: Data from two EMA studies were analyzed separately. Study 1 included 118 adult females with full- or subthreshold DSM-IV anorexia nervosa. Study 2 included 131 adult females with full-threshold DSM-IV bulimia nervosa. For

The Association of Cigarette Smoking With High-Frequency Heart Rate Variability: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence from both laboratory and observational studies suggests that acute and chronic smoking leads to reduced high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV), a measure of cardiac vagal regulation. We used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to study the effect of smoking on concurrent HF-HRV in a trial measuring the effects of hostility reduction and compared 24-hour HF-HRV in smokers and nonsmokers. METHOD: Ambulatory electrocardiogram data were collected before randomization from 149 healthy individuals with high hostility levels (20-45 years, body mass index ≤ 32 kg/m) and

Influence of psychological factors on acute exacerbation of tension-type headache: Investigation by ecological momentary assessment.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigated whether psychological factors were associated with subsequent acute exacerbation of tension-type headache (TTH) in a prospective and ecologically valid manner with computerized ecological momentary assessment. METHODS: Eighteen women and five men with TTH wore watch-type computers that acted as an electronic diary for 1week. The subjects recorded momentary headache intensity, psychological stress, anxiety, and depressive mood with a visual analog scale of 0-100 approximately every 6h as well as when waking up, when going to bed, and at acute headache

Diurnal variation of tension-type headache intensity and exacerbation: An investigation using computerized ecological momentary assessment.

BACKGROUNDS: Tension-type headache is a common psychosomatic disease. However, diurnal variation of headache is yet to be clarified, perhaps due to the lack of an appropriate method to investigate it. Like other painful diseases, it would be helpful to know if there is diurnal variation in tension-type headaches, both for managing headaches and understanding their pathophysiology. The aim of this study was to determine if there is diurnal variation in the intensity and exacerbation of tension-type headache. METHODS: Patients (N = 31) with tension-type headache recorded for one week their mome

Matching laboratory and real-world listening environments with ecological momentary assessment improves prediction of speech perception.

Laboratory speech-in-noise measures fail to predict real-world listening performance. This study tested whether matching laboratory to real-world environments using self-reported noise sources from ecological momentary assessment (EMA) improves predictions. Speech intelligibility and listening effort were measured in virtual acoustic environments in 51 normal-hearing adults, who then self-rated both via EMA for 1 week. Laboratory intelligibility predicted real-world intelligibility only when laboratory and real-world environments were matched. Effort results were not significant. Findings sugg

Reciprocal association between rest-activity rhythm and depression in young adults: An ecological momentary assessment study.

Depressive symptoms commonly increase during young adulthood and have been associated with disruptions in rest-activity rhythms (RAR), but prospective within-person associations between daily RAR characteristics and depressive symptoms remain unclear. This study examined reciprocal within-person associations between daily RAR parameters and depression among young adults. A total of 319 participants (mean age = 19.16 years; 78.1% female) contributed 3155 analytic person-days during a 14-day wrist-actigraphy and ecological momentary assessment protocol. RAR parameters included acrophase, circadi

Repetitive negative thinking in daily life predicts psychopathology: Further validation of an ecological momentary assessment paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is an important transdiagnostic process involved in the development and maintenance of psychopathology. In a previous study, we developed an Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) paradigm to assess RNT in daily life. This study aimed to replicate and extend earlier findings on the reliability and validity of the EMA paradigm, including the prediction of future mental health. In exploratory analyses, the predictive utility of dynamic patterns of RNT, such as stress-reactive RNT, variability, inertia, and instability of EMA-based RNT was investigate

Temporal dynamics of CBT emotion regulation training in patients with major depression using ecological momentary assessment.

Rumination is known to have a negative impact on both the process of psychotherapy as well as the development of depressive symptoms and even the probability of relapses in Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). Therefore, treatment approaches focusing on strategies to overcome rumination have been developed over the last decades, e.g., by improving emotion regulation. However, little is yet known about the specific mechanisms of action of psychotherapy between sessions, and in particular analyses of time-dependent changes are scarce. Therefore, we used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to colle

Independence in Activities of Daily Living Among Autistic Toddlers: A Pilot Study Using Ecological Momentary Assessment.

Background: The acquisition of adaptive skills is critical for independence and participation in activities of daily living (ADL). While caregiver perceptions provide valuable insights, most studies on autistic participation have focused on older children and relied on one-time clinic-based assessments. As a result, little is known about how autistic toddlers function in their natural environments across time. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) is a real-time, context-sensitive method in which parents can report behaviors at multiple time points in the child's natural environment. This pilo

Appraisal of social interaction and social motivation in homeless-experienced veterans: An ecological momentary assessment study.

OBJECTIVE: Initiatives developed by the Department of Veteran Affairs have reduced Veteran homelessness, but homeless-experienced veterans (HEVs) still face social integration challenges, such as reduced social interactions. Smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment provides a valuable way to remotely gather data on these challenges in HEVs' daily lives. Social interactions are part of a behavioral sequence, involving a social interaction, its appraisal (pleasant/successful vs. unpleasant/unsuccessful), and subsequent motivation for future social interaction. Motivation can be in the fo

Adherence to high-frequency ecological momentary assessment in persons with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) involves repeated collection of real-time self-report data, often multiple times per day, nearly always delivered electronically by smartphone. While EMA has shown promise for researching internal states, behaviors, and experiences in multiple populations, concerns remain regarding its feasibility in samples with cognitive impairments, like those associated with chronic moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: This study examines adherence to a 7-week high-frequency (5x daily) EMA protocol in individuals with moderate-to-severe

Stress, repetitive negative thinking, and mental health in Chilean university students: an ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders in university students are a growing attention problem in the international community due to their high prevalence and serious consequences. One possible reason is university students' difficulties in coping with stress. Repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a transdiagnostic process that, when combined with stress, can lead to the development of various disorders. We aim to determine the effect of stress and RNT on predicting various mental health syndromes in university students across 7 days. METHOD: Prospective observational study using Momentary Ecological As
