Integrated multisystem analysis in a mental health and criminal justice ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: Patients with a serious mental illness often receive care that is fragmented due to reduced availability of or access to resources, and inadequate, discontinuous, and uncoordinated care across health, social services, and criminal justice organizations. This article describes the creation of a multisystem analysis that derives insights from an integrated dataset including patient access to case management services, medical services, and interactions with the criminal justice system. METHODS: Data were combined from electronic systems within a US mental health ecosystem that includ

Ecosystem-Based Incorporation of Nectar-Producing Plants for Stink Bug Parasitoids.

Adult parasitoids of pest insects rely on floral resources for survival and reproduction, but can be food-deprived in intensively managed agricultural systems lacking these resources. Stink bugs are serious pests for crops in southwest Georgia. Provisioning nectar-producing plants for parasitoids of stink bugs potentially can enhance biocontrol of these pests. Knowledge of spatial and temporal availability and distribution of stink bugs in host plants is necessary for appropriate timing and placement of flowering plants in agroecosystems. Stink bugs move between closely associated host plants

Isolation of Treponema DNA from Necrophagous Flies in a Natural Ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the World Health Organization launched a campaign to eradicate the tropical disease yaws, caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue; however, for decades researchers have questioned whether flies act as a vector for the pathogen that could facilitate transmission. METHODS: A total of 207 fly specimens were trapped in areas of Africa in which T. pallidum-induced skin ulcerations are common in wild baboons; 88 flies from Tarangire National Park and 119 from Lake Manyara National Park in Tanzania were analyzed by PCR for the presence of T. pallidum DNA. Approaching environmental health disparities and green spaces: an ecosystem services perspective.

Health disparities occur when adverse health conditions are unequal across populations due in part to gaps in wealth. These disparities continue to plague global health. Decades of research suggests that the natural environment can play a key role in sustaining the health of the public. However, the influence of the natural environment on health disparities is not well-articulated. Green spaces provide ecosystem services that are vital to public health. This paper discusses the link between green spaces and some of the nation's leading health issues such as obesity, cardiovascular health, heat

Oldest evidence of tool making hominins in a grassland-dominated ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: Major biological and cultural innovations in late Pliocene hominin evolution are frequently linked to the spread or fluctuating presence of C(4) grass in African ecosystems. Whereas the deep sea record of global climatic change provides indirect evidence for an increase in C(4) vegetation with a shift towards a cooler, drier and more variable global climatic regime beginning approximately 3 million years ago (Ma), evidence for grassland-dominated ecosystems in continental Africa and hominin activities within such ecosystems have been lacking. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We rep

Pesticide usage pattern in tea ecosystem, their retrospects and alternative measures.

Tea is a perennial plantation crop grown under monoculture providing favorable conditions for a variety of pests. The concept of pest control has undergone a considerable change over the past few decades. In recent years there has been a greater dependence on the use of pesticides (7.35-16.75 kgha(-1)) with little importance laid on other safe control methods for the management of tea pests. Due to this practice, the tea pests showed a higher tolerance/ resistance status due to formation of greater amount of esterases, glutathione S-transferase and acetylcholinesterase. Thus, over reliance on

Nitrogen trace gas emissions from a riparian ecosystem in southern Appalachia.

In this paper, we present two years of seasonal nitric oxide (NO), ammonia (NH3), and nitrous oxide (N2O) trace gas fluxes measured in a recovering riparian zone with cattle excluded and adjacent riparian zone grazed by cattle. In the recovering riparian zone, average NO, NH3, and N2O fluxes were 5.8, 2.0, and 76.7 ng N m(-2) S(-1) (1.83, 0.63, and 24.19 kg N ha(-1) y(-1)), respectively. Fluxes in the grazed riparian zone were larger, especially for NO and NH3, measuring 9.1, 4.3, and 77.6 ng N m(-2) S(-1) (2.87, 1.35, and 24.50 kg N ha(-1) y(-1)) for NO, NH3, and N2O, respectively. Transmission of bancroftian filariasis in tea agro-ecosystem of Assam, India.

Tea industry is a labor intensive agro-industry and filariasis is mostly localized among the tea garden workers in Assam. The workers live inside the gardens in colonies. Studies conducted in two cosecutive years revealed that among the host seeking Culex quinquefasciatus average infection rate was 4.6% and with 2.1 larvae per mosquito. The overall prevalence of infective mosquitos was 0.8% with average L3 load of 2.0 per mosquito. The probability of infected mosquitos surviving to have complete development of filarial larvae (13 days) was 0.17. The expectation of infective life was 1.416 days

Trichinella spiralis in an agricultural ecosystem: transmission in the rat population.

Four hundred forty-three Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) were examined to determine their role in the transmission and maintenance of Trichinella spiralis on a pig farm. Rats, classified by sex and weight, were examined for trichinellosis by peptic digestion of muscle samples. Over a 25-mo period, 188 (42.4%) rats were found to be infected with T. spiralis. The mean intensity of infection was 293.2 larvae per gram (LPG) of muscle; 65 (34.6%) infected rats had intensities of infection greater than 100 LPG. Even in the absence of a known source of infected meat (garbage containing meat scraps or

Smoke-Affected Rain Fertilizes Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecosystems.

Wildland fire smoke and ash are pervasive and a significant source of particulate matter to the atmosphere. In addition to effects on air quality, wildland smoke and ash deposit to ecosystems via dry (particulate) and wet (precipitation) deposition. Here we combine remotely sensed smoke polygon data with rainfall and weekly wet deposition data from > 250 U.S. National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) sites to quantify wildland smoke influence on wet ion deposition during 2014, 2020, and 2022. Combined records of daily smoke and rain indicate that sites experienced 21 smoke-rain days (when

Morphological divergence of Creole goats across Peruvian ecosystems.

Peruvian Creole goats constitute a genetically distinct population shaped by long-term crossbreeding and adaptation. Peru spans ecological gradients that likely drive regional phenotypic differentiation, yet the morphometric basis remains poorly resolved. We assessed the concordance between morphometric structuring of goats, ecosystem distribution, and regional origin. Body weight (BW) and seven linear body measurements (LBM) were recorded in 515 adult female goats sampled across five ecosystems and seven regions. Low-dimensional structure for BW and LBM was explored using uniform manifold app

Infections as ecosystems: community metabolic interactions in microbial pathogenesis.

Microbes rarely exist alone; instead, they live in dynamic multi-species communities with a range of metabolic capacities. To establish within a polymicrobial community, an organism must compete with the other members of the community for space and nutrients. In addition, microbes form complex metabolic interdependencies in polymicrobial environments, and these nutrient exchanges are central to overall community function. Interactions between microbial community members dictate key processes, including nutrient cycling, tolerance to disturbances, and disease progression, and these interactions

Emerging Trends in Antimicrobial Resistance in Polar Aquatic Ecosystems.

The global spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens to plummet society back to the pre-antibiotic era through a resurgence of common everyday infections' morbidity. Thus, studies investigating antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in urban, agricultural, and clinical settings, as well as in extreme environments, have become increasingly relevant in the One Health perspective. Since the Antarctic and Arctic regions are considered amongst the few remaining pristine environments on Earth, the characterization of their native resistome appears to be o

Groundwater releases CO2 to diverse global coastal ecosystems.

Coastal ecosystems play a major role in marine carbon budgets, but substantial uncertainties remain in the sources and fluxes of coastal carbon dioxide (CO2). Here, we assess when, where, and how submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) releases CO2 to shallow coastal ecosystems. Time-series observations of dissolved CO2 and radon (222Rn, a natural groundwater tracer) across 40 coastal systems from 14 countries revealed large SGD-derived CO2 fluxes. The mean groundwater partial pressure of CO2 was 35 times higher than surface seawater. The mean SGD-derived CO2 flux was 148 ± 226 millimoles per sq

Inositol phosphates as an overlooked phosphorous source in marine ecosystems.

Inositol phosphates, common phosphorus storage compounds that are also crucial for eukaryotic cell signaling, constitute a significant portion of dissolved organic phosphorus in coastal waters. The hydrolysis of inositol phosphates could be an important contributor to phosphorus cycling in phosphorus-limited marine ecosystems, yet this process remains poorly understood in marine contexts. In this study, we reveal substantial concentrations of inositol phosphates in marine macrophytes, including green, brown, and red algae as well as common seagrasses, suggesting that these organisms are likely

Pharmaceuticals in urban streams: A review of their detection and effects in the ecosystem.

The presence of pharmaceuticals in urban freshwater has been considered an emerging issue. Although rivers are better studied, the streams crossing the cities, which are prone to higher concentrations of pharmaceuticals, and with a higher potential to affect animals, plant and human health, were never specifically addressed in a review. Thus, here we performed a literature review on the existing pharmaceutical contamination and impacts of these compounds in the urban stream ecosystems. To structure the review, 10 questions were designed. From a total of 206 scientific publications, only 51 add

A multidisciplinary approach to analyze the antimicrobial resistance in natural ecosystems.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) poses a global threat to both human health and environmental well-being. Our study delved into Costa Rican wildlife reserves, uncovering a substantial human impact on these ecosystems and underscoring the imperative to pinpoint AMR hotspots. Embracing a One Health perspective, we advocated for a comprehensive landscape analysis that intricately intertwined geographic, climatic, forest, and human factors. This study illuminated the link between laboratory results and observed patterns of antimicrobial use, thereby paving the way for sustainable solutions. Our inno

Microbial Ecosystems in Movile Cave: An Environment of Extreme Life.

Movile Cave, situated in Romania close to the Black Sea, constitutes a distinct and challenging environment for life. Its partially submerged ecosystem depends on chemolithotrophic processes for its energetics, which are fed by a continuous hypogenic inflow of mesothermal waters rich in reduced chemicals such as hydrogen sulfide and methane. We sampled a variety of cave sublocations over the course of three years. Furthermore, in a microcosm experiment, minerals were incubated in the cave waters for one year. Both endemic cave samples and extracts from the minerals were subjected to 16S rRNA a

Impacts of Pesticides on Oral Cavity Health and Ecosystems: A Review.

Pesticides are chemical substances used to control, prevent, or destroy agricultural, domestic, and livestock pests. These compounds produce adverse changes in health, and they have been associated with the development of multiple chronic diseases. This study aimed to present a detailed review of the effect of pesticides on the oral cavity and the oral microbiome. In the oral cavity, pesticides alter and/or modify tissues and the microbiome, thereby triggering imbalance in the ecosystem, generating an inflammatory response, and activating hydrolytic enzymes. In particular, the imbalance in the
