Utilizing the CFIR to Evaluate Rural COVID-19 Vaccine Uptake: Extension Personnel Perspectives.

Background/Objectives: Rural populations in the United States experienced consistently lower COVID-19 vaccination rates than urban populations during the pandemic. While barriers to vaccination have been well documented, less is known about facilitators of uptake in rural settings. This study aimed to identify facilitators of COVID-19 vaccination in rural communities from the perspectives of Washington State University (WSU) Extension personnel and to examine these factors using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) Outer Setting domain. Methods: A qualitative descripti

Cancer-Related Lymphedema Management: Development of Patient Education Resources.

Lymphedema education following cancer surgery helps patients feel more empowered to perform their own self-care. This may lead to fewer lymphedema symptoms postoperatively resulting in an overall improvement in the patient's quality of life. We identified a need for written comprehensive postoperative lymphedema patient education at our institution. We created the educational resources with the help of a multidisciplinary team and these resources are currently being provided to the patients during their visit to our lymphedema clinic. Plastic and breast oncology nurses, a plastic surgeon speci

Implementing a UDL Framework: A Study of Current Personnel Preparation Practices.

Young adults with intellectual disability (ID) continue to experience the least successful postschool outcomes among transition-aged youth ( Sanford et al., 2011 ). Experts disagree on the most effective approach to improve outcomes such as employment, postsecondary education, and community living. In 2015, the National Goals Conference brought together educational researchers to set an agenda to guide the field in terms of research, practice, and policy ( Thoma, Cain, & Walther-Thomas, 2015 ). One of their recommendations, based on promising research and practices, urged the field to identify

Back injuries in the athlete.

In summary, the approach to the athlete with low back pain must include an emphasis on aggressive nonoperative intervention, education, and rehabilitation. A diligent attempt must be made to establish a correct diagnosis, though this may be difficult at first. A firm diagnosis allows individualized treatment that meets the strenuous needs of the athlete. Work-up should be standardized to avoid missing what will appear obvious in retrospect. Unlike most of the general patient population, athletes are unlikely to tolerate a long period of "wait and see" therapy. It is necessary to have qualified

Developing an antimicrobial stewardship program across a rural health system: The Avera Health experience.

PURPOSE: The stages of development of a health system-wide antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) using existing personnel and technology are described. SUMMARY: Small hospitals with limited resources may struggle to meet ASP requirements, particularly facilities without onsite infectious disease physicians and/or experienced infectious disease pharmacists. Strategies for ASP development employed by Avera Health, a 33-hospital health system in the Midwest, included identifying relevant drug utilization and resistance patterns, education and pathway development, and implementation of Web-base

A new paradigm in patient education: a four-part model using videotape production.

In this article, the effectiveness of an instructional videotape for newly admitted hospitalized psychiatric patients is discussed and evaluated. It is suggested that by using 'actors' with whom the patient is familiar (hospital staff), the educational and therapeutic benefit of the video is enhanced. This paper provides a method for pre-production planning of an effective videotape based on a four-part model. In this model, the educational subject matter is divided into four categories; facts, procedures, support, and mastery. An attempt is made to match various styles of presentation by each

Addressing Healthcare Provider Moral Resilience in Global Context: Insights From an International Workshop.

Moral distress in healthcare is well documented, yet constructive strategies to address it remain underexplored. Moral resilience, defined by Rushton as the capacity to sustain or restore moral integrity in the face of adversity, offers a promising response. Interest in this concept is growing globally, as researchers translate and apply the Rushton Moral Resilience Scale across diverse cultural and healthcare contexts. This discussion paper aims to advance the field of moral resilience research by identifying international research priorities and fostering interdisciplinary and global dialogu

Adapting the Serious Illness Conversation communication training workshop from the Western to an Asian context in Singapore.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The Serious Illness Care Program (SICP) was developed in the United States and consists of three main componentsthe-Serious Illness Conversation Guide (SICG), Serious Illness Conversation (SIC) communication training, and quality improvement system tools like dashboards to track SIC processes and uptake. We anticipated that SIC training would need to be contextualized locally for training to be more effective for local clinicians. Our purpose now is to present our adaptation of the SIC communication training program from the Western to the Asian context. METHODS: The ad

Five hats of effective leaders: teacher, mentor, coach, supervisor and sponsor.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Teaching, mentoring, coaching, supervising and sponsoring are often conflated in the literature. In this reflection, we clarify the distinctions, the benefits and the drawbacks of each approach. We describe a conceptual model for effective leadership conversations where leaders dynamically and deliberately 'wear the hats' of teacher, mentor, coach, supervisor and/or sponsor during a single conversation. METHODS: As three experienced physician leaders and educators, we collaborated to write this reflection on how leaders may deliberately alter their approach during dynamic conv

Kidney health for all: bridging the gap in kidney health education and literacy.

The high burden of kidney disease, global disparities in kidney care, and poor outcomes of kidney failure bring a concomitant growing burden to persons affected, their families, and carers, and the community at large. Health literacy is the degree to which persons and organizations have or equitably enable individuals to have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to make informed health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others. Rather than viewing health literacy as a patient deficit, improving health literacy largely rests with health care providers

Use of eHealth for HIV Medical Education: a Narrative Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The complexity of HIV care and its expanding clinical workforce has created a need for new distance learning models to deliver medical education. We conducted a narrative review to assess the acceptability and effectiveness of recent eHealth HIV education interventions supporting HIV healthcare providers. RECENT FINDINGS: Evidence from 24 articles revealed that synchronous (real time), asynchronous (any time), and hybrid (combination) models of eHealth education are feasible and acceptable. Only two interventions (one asynchronous, one hybrid) of 19 included in the review u

Postdoctoral struggles in the Global South: insights from India.

The global postdoctoral community faces many challenges including low pay, irregular benefits, little job security amid cost-of-living hikes, challenges to mental health, and power imbalances. Conclusions from the 2020 and 2023 global postdoctoral surveys by Nature highlighting these struggles are highly skewed towards respondents from the Global North, underrepresenting the Global South. Here, we address the postdoctoral struggles of scholars in the Global South who are more vulnerable due to low-income economy and patriarchal society that discriminates against women. We argue that neglecting

Orton-Gillingham and the IDEA: analysis of the frequency and outcomes of case law.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act grants dissatisfied parents of students with disabilities the right to pursue legal remedies. In 2007, Rose and Zirkel found that parents of students with reading disabilities seeking Orton-Gillingham (OG) instruction under the IDEA's central obligation for a free appropriate public education (FAPE) were largely unsuccessful in their complaints. Since that review, various factors had the potential to influence the frequency and outcomes of OG-related case law-namely, the peer-reviewed research requirement of the IDEA and growing awareness of the

[Hospital nursing personnel staffing and patient outcome].

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this review is to comment on the association between hospital nursing personnel staffing and patient outcomes, including the avoidance of errors and complications. METHODS: A literature search was carried out in the Medline database on publications from the last 10 years on nursing personnel staffing. RESULTS: Only overviews and observational studies on the topic were available and no controlled or prospective surveys. Most investigators assumed that there was an inverse relationship between low nursing staff levels of hospital wards and intensive care and adverse o
