Anaplasma and Ehrlichia are tick-borne bacterial pathogens that cause anaplasmoses and ehrlichioses in humans and animals. In this study, we examined the prevalence of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia species in ticks and domesticated animals in Suizhou County, Hubei Province in the central China. We used PCR amplification and DNA sequencing of the 16S rRNA, groEL, and gltA genes to analyze. We collected 1900 ticks, including 1981 Haemaphysalis longicornis and 9 Rhipicephalus microplus, 159 blood samples of goats (n = 152), cattle (n = 4), and dogs (n = 3) from May to August of 2023. PCR products demon

Ehrlichiosis, caused by Gram-negative bacteria of the genus Ehrlichia, is considered an emerging infectious disease due to the increasing number of reported cases. Symptoms are non-specific and occur within 1 to 2 weeks following the bite of an infected tick. Confirmatory laboratory diagnostic methods vary in sensitivity and specimen requirements, which can lead to delayed diagnosis. PCR testing serves as an efficient approach to Ehrlichia confirmation in the acute stage of illness. Published assays have been effectively used to detect human ehrlichiosis at limit of detections ranging from 10

Ehrlichia canis is an obligate intracellular microorganism and the etiologic agent of canine monocytic ehrlichiosis. The invasion process has already been described for some bacteria in this genus, such as E. muris and E. chaffeensis, and consists of four stages: adhesion, internalisation, intracellular proliferation and intercellular spreading. However, little is known about the spreading process of E. canis. The aim of this study was to analyse the role of the actin cytoskeleton, calcium, iron and lysosomes from the host cell in the spreading of E. canis in dog macrophages in vitro. Differen

Canine ehrlichiosis is caused by the bacterium Ehrlichia canis and is characterized by a systemic febrile disease of unknown pathogenesis. This study evaluated the expression of cytokines TNF-α, IL-10, IFN-γ, in splenic cells and blood leukocytes during the acute phase of ehrlichiosis and after treatment with doxycycline hyclate in dogs experimentally infected with the E. canis Jaboticabal strain. The study results showed a significant expression of TNF-α 18 days post-inoculation, reducing by approximately 70% after treatment. There was a unique peak of expression of IL-10 and IFN-γ 18 and 30

Experiments on the natural history of Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the agent of human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), would be facilitated by the availability of a laboratory animal model for transmission to vector ticks. Five strains of mice were evaluated for their susceptibility to infection with E. chaffeensis and transmission competence: C57BL/6 mice, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) deficient mice, MHC I deficient (beta2m /) mice, MHC II deficient mice (Abb /), and B and T cell deficient (Rag1 /) mice. Mice were inoculated with a low passage isolate of E. chaffeensis, and infection and mor

The causative agents of scrub and murine typhus are considered endemic to Indonesia. However, the presence of spotted fever group rickettsiae and ehrlichiae have not been previously described in this country. During an investigation of arthropod-borne diseases on Gag Island, located northwest of the island of New Guinea in eastern Indonesia, the prevalence of antibody to the etiologic agents of monocytic ehrlichiosis, spotted fever rickettsiosis, and scrub and murine typhus were determined. Analysis of 55 blood samples from residents of Gag Island showed seroreactivity to antigen preparations

Ehrlichiosis (tropical canine pancytopenia) was diagnosed in Illinois in a 4 1/2-year-old mixed breed dog that had spent the previous 2 years in India. The dog had periodic epistaxis, anemia, leukopenia, hypoalbuminemia, and hypergammaglobulinemia. A titer of 1:160 for Ehrlichia canis was detected by the indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). Subinoculation of blood into a clinically normal dgo resulted in typical signs of canine ehrlichiosis, and E canis was identified in circulating mononuclear cells. The recipient died 23 days after inoculation, and typical gross and microscopic lesions

Ehrlichia canis is an obligate intracellular bacterium and the etiologic agent of canine monocytic ehrlichiosis, an infectious disease that affects dogs and is often associated with thrombocytopenia. This study aimed to analyze the genetic variability of E. canis in thrombocytopenic dogs from two mesoregions in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We analyzed 404 blood samples from dogs with thrombocytopenia using the dsb, p28, and trp36 genes as molecular targets. The positivity rate was 21.04% (85/404) for the dsb and p28 genes, while the trp36 gene had a detection rate of 34.1% (29/85) in t

Ehrlichia chaffeensis is an obligatory intracellular bacterium that causes human monocytic ehrlichiosis, an emerging disease transmitted by the Lone Star tick, Amblyomma americanum. E. chaffeensis outer membrane protein entry triggering protein of Ehrlichia (EtpE) is necessary for bacterial entry into human cells. We investigated the role of EtpE in transmission of the bacteria from tick to human cells and whether or not vaccination with EtpE can prevent transmission of ehrlichiae from ticks to mammals. An antiserum against the recombinant C terminus of EtpE (rEtpE-C), which binds a mammalian

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Ehrlichiosis caused by Ehrlichia ruminantium is a tick-borne disease of great economic importance in cattle production worldwide. Despite its economic impact, limited knowledge is available on its epidemiology in Africa, including Kenya. Suspected cases of E. ruminantium infections have been reported in the recent past to the University of Nairobi's Veterinary Hospital, prompting the need to investigate their possible re-emergence. Therefore, this study was aimed at determining the prevalence of E. ruminantium among smallholder dairy cattle in Nairobi City County and to ass

BACKGROUND: In the Pacific islands countries and territories, very little is known about the incidence of infectious diseases due to zoonotic pathogens. To our knowledge, human infections due to Rickettsia spp., Coxiella burnetii, Ehrlichia spp. and Bartonella spp. have never been reported in French Polynesia; and infections due to C. burnetti have been reported worldwide except in New Zealand. To evaluate the prevalence of this disease, we conducted a serosurvey among French Polynesian blood donors.
METHODS: The presence of immunoglobulin G antibodies against R. felis, R. typhi, R. conorii,

We report Marie Galante as one of the Caribbean islands most heavily infested by the tropical bont tick (TBT) Amblyomma variegatum which is associated with two major diseases of ruminants: heartwater and dermatophilosis. In 2005, a survey was undertaken to assess the prevalence of TBT infestation in cattle, the prevalence of Ehrlichia ruminantium infection in TBTs, and the tick control measures implemented by livestock owners. A random sample of 195 cattle herds out of 1885 recorded on the island was investigated by thoroughly counting adult ticks on each animal and filling a questionnaire. A

The natural history of Ehrlichia chaffeensis, the causative agent of human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis, includes the lone star tick (LST, Amblyomma americanum) as a vector and white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus) as both a natural reservoir of E. chaffeensis and a major host of LST. The goal of the current study was to implement and evaluate a prototype surveillance system to delineate the geographic distribution of E. chaffeensis using WTD as natural sentinels. To accomplish this goal, serologic testing using the indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) test was performed on WTD s

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) evidence of a novel Ehrlichia organism was found recently in wild white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus Zimmermann, and lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum L., from the southeastern United States. To evaluate whether lone star tick parasitism was associated with the presence of this novel Ehrlichia organism in deer, 2 retrospective studies were conducted using specific nested PCR to test archived deer serum samples. The 1st study of 150 serum samples collected from a single deer population over a 15-yr period examined the temporal association between the p

Ehrlichia is a genus of Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacteria that causes ehrlichiosis in a wide range of domestic and wild animals and is primarily transmitted by ticks. Although Ehrlichia species have been reported in numerous vertebrate hosts, their occurrence in bats remains poorly understood. Thailand, located within the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot and home to more than 146 bat species, provides an ideal setting for investigating bat-associated microorganisms. This study investigated the molecular prevalence and genetic diversity of Ehrlichia spp. in bats and bat-associated t

Tick borne bacterial infections are an emerging threat to dromedary camels, mostly by pathogens of the rickettsial family Anaplasmatacea. They include mainly two genera, Anaplasma and Ehrlichia that are obligate intracellular organisms. Reports of Anaplasma infections in camels are common but reports of Ehrlichia are rare. This study was undertaken to get an insight into the magnitude of the relative occurrence of Anaplasma and Ehrlichia infections in dromedary camels of Al Ain, Abu Dhabi, UAE. A total of 160 camels were initially screened using rRNA-based PCR and subsequently with chaperon Gro

Tick- and flea-borne diseases, including rickettsiosis, bartonellosis, and ehrlichiosis, have increased in incidence globally in recent years, affecting both humans and animals. Although the circulation of these pathogens has been documented in Mexico, information from the state of Sinaloa remains limited. Despite environmental conditions that favor zoonotic transmission, the diversity of dog ectoparasites and the pathogens they harbor remains poorly studied. This study aimed to determine the frequency of the main ectoparasites infesting domestic dogs in Sinaloa, Mexico, and to molecularly and
