What Can a Jump Tell Us About Elbow Injuries in Professional Baseball Pitchers?

BACKGROUND: The incidence rate of elbow injuries has been rising in recent years among professional baseball pitchers. Determining valid screening procedures that allow practitioners to identify pitchers at an increased risk of such injuries is therefore of critical importance. PURPOSE: To validate the use of countermovement jump (CMJ) tests as a diagnostic tool for pitcher conditioning. STUDY DESIGN: Case-control study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: More than 500 pitchers at a single professional baseball organization performed preseason CMJ assessments on a force plate before the 2013 to

[Assessment of ligament and tendon injuries of the elbow using magnetic resonance imaging].

An overview about the normal anatomy and frequent pathologies of tendons and ligaments of the elbow using MRI will be provided. The unique joint configuration and articulation, as well as passive ligamentous and active muscle structures as well as the unique configuration of the articulating components of the elbow contribute to joint stabilization. MRI is an essential imaging modality in patients with ligamentous injuries including the sequelae of joint dislocation as well as chronic pathologies such as long-standing and refractory tendinopathies. Ideally, when reporting MRI of the elbow, the

Magnetic resonance imaging-based classification for ulnar collateral ligament injuries of the elbow.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) arthrography has been considered the gold standard for imaging ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries. No classification system has been described for UCL tears to help discuss and guide treatment options. We propose that an MRI-based UCL classification system would correlate with valgus laxity and help predict surgical management. METHODS: The MRIs from 240 patients who underwent UCL reconstruction were reviewed and classified according to a system based on severity and location of the UCL injury. Bilateral elbow valgus stress radiographs were u

Evaluation and treatment of the elbow and forearm injuries in the emergency department.

Elbow and forearm injuries result most commonly from direct blows to the area, or from fall on outstretched hand. The elbow may be injured if it is locked at the time of impact. Elbow or forearm bone dislocations may occur alone or in conjunction with fractures and generally require reduction to minimize future morbidity. The primary goal of management is to achieve anatomic reduction of any fracture or dislocation, while allowing for early range of motion to minimize future morbidity, including in particular elbow stiffness and consequently limited mobility of the joint.

Lower trapezius muscle transfer for reconstruction of elbow extension in brachial plexus injuries.

Elbow extension is a prerequisite for adequate hand position. Muscle transfers are often employed in partial injuries of the brachial plexus, when neurological surgery is unlikely to achieve desired results. The posterior deltoid and latissimus dorsi are the two muscles most commonly used for transfer but there are few alternatives when these two muscles are paralysed. We now report on the successful transfer of the lower trapezius muscle to reconstruct triceps function in three patients with longstanding lesions of the brachial plexus that had not been previously treated surgically.

The emerging role of elbow arthroscopy in chronic use injuries and fracture care.

Arthroscopy is emerging as an invaluable tool for diagnosing and treating elbow pathology. In addition to the advantages of less scarring, decreased risk of infection, less postoperative pain, and a more thorough visualization of the elbow joint, arthroscopy is particularly well suited to the treatment of athletes trying to minimize rehabilitation and inactivity. Indications for elbow arthroscopy now extend well beyond diagnosis and loose body removal, and include the treatment of impingement, arthritis, contractures, fragment stabilization for osteochondritis dessicans, and treatment of certa

Comparison of acute versus subacute treatment of terrible triad injuries of the elbow.

PURPOSE: To test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in flexion arc or Broberg and Morrey rating between patients treated within 2 weeks of the injury (acute treatment) and those treated 3 weeks or more after injury with persistent or recurrent dislocation or subluxation (subacute treatment). METHODS: The acute cohort consisted of 18 patients treated an average 6 days after injury. The radial head was replaced in 17 patients and repaired with screw in 1, the coronoid was secured with suture in all patients and with an additional screw in 2, and the lateral collateral ligament was

The immature athlete. Common injuries and overuse syndromes of the elbow and wrist.

Specific elbow and wrist injuries are predictable in the skeletally immature athlete based on the biomechanics of the sport and the age of the patient. The physician must be aware of the potential for overuse injuries. Modification in training regimens is essential for recovery. A greater emphasis must be placed on the prevention of these injuries. As a general rule, the young athlete should not progress more than 10% per week in the amount and frequency of training. Correction of muscle-tendon imbalances is accomplished by maintaining strength and flexibility of susceptible tissues. In throwe

Examination and assessment of injuries and problems affecting the elbow, wrist, and hand.

In summary, injuries to the elbow, wrist, and hand are common complaints in emergency department practice. A systematic, thorough examination should be carried out meticulously on each injured patient. Routine radiographs should be taken and any additional views that are needed should be ordered. Most of the commonly missed injuries are due to an inadequate physical examination and inadequate x-ray films of the injured part.

[Progress on the treatment of terrible triad injury of elbow joint].

As to terrible triad injury of elbow joint, because of the complexity of the surrounding anatomy of the elbow joint, the limited biomechanical study, the difficult treatments, and the poor prognosis, the choice of the treatment scheme is still controversial. This article summarizes the anatomy, injury mechanism, surgical treatment and prognosis of elbow joint by retrieving a large number of references. Currently, there are various surgical treatments for triad injury of elbow joint, but due to individual differences, the clinical efficacy is mostly uncertain. In the treatment of triad injury o

The Treatment of Distal Radius Fractures with Ipsilateral Elbow Injury.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the functional outcomes of simultaneous distal radius fractures (DRFs) and ipsilateral elbow injuries (IEI) and to evaluate whether the DRFs and IEI affect each other's outcomes. METHODS: From February 2008 to March 2015, 29 of 846 patients treated for DRFs were found to be associated with IEI and 26 patients with follow-up over 12 months were enrolled. There were 12 men and 14 women with a mean age of 55 years (range, 17-86 years). Associated IEI was divided into fracture group (10 patients) and dislocation group (16 patients). Clinical out

Brachial artery injury accompanying closed elbow dislocations.

INTRODUCTION: Brachial artery injuries from elbow dislocations are uncommon, but they may lead to disastrous consequences if the diagnosis is delayed. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of a patient who sustained a fall onto the elbow, with dislocation and brachial artery injury, despite an ipsilateral radial pulse being palpable. DISCUSSION: Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for brachial injury when patients present with a fall onto the elbow coupled with signs suggestive of fracture-dislocation, nerve injury and/or signs of limb ischemia. Frank ischamia, however, is

The Elbow Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injury Prognosis Score.

BACKGROUND: No model exists to predict which patients with elbow ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries will successfully return to play (RTP) after nonoperative treatment. The reported rates for successful RTP after the nonoperative management of UCL injuries are limited and vary widely. Furthermore, patient and injury characteristics that influence the failure of nonoperative treatment have not been established. PURPOSE: To identify patient- and injury-specific factors predictive of successful RTP after the nonoperative management of UCL injuries in baseball players. STUDY DESIGN: Retros

Virtual fracture clinics: be vigilant for the ligamentous elbow injury.

The Covid-19 pandemic encouraged remote healthcare and led to dependency on virtual fracture clinics (VFC). VFC are orthopaedic consultant-led clinics where cases are reviewed virtually following referral by emergency department clinicians. Success is contingent on a comprehensive initial history and examination. This pathway has high patient satisfaction rates and cost-saving benefits. However, clinicians must be vigilant for high-energy mechanisms or examination findings suggestive of greater underlying injury. In this case, VFC missed a rare ipsilateral annular ligament injury in a 15-year

[Bilateral elbow dislocation related to Essex-Lopresti injury].

Elbow dislocation is second in frequency, after the shoulder, whereas bilateral dislocation is uncommon, even less than dislocations with concurrent associated fractures. One of the least frequent associations is the Essex-Lopresti injury which consists of a fracture of the radial head affecting the distal radioulnar joint with injury to the interosseous membrane. This is a case of bilateral elbow dislocation, one of the elbows associated with the Essex-Lopresti injury. During treatment, the premature closed reduction prevails, previously making sure the elbow is stable, the premise which will
