BACKGROUND: The popularity of electric scooters (e-scooters) and the shared e-scooter services as new means of transportation worldwide led to high numbers of injuries requiring emergency department (ED) visits. Private and rental e-scooters have different sizes and capabilities, offering several possible riding positions. While the rising use of e-scooters and their associated injuries have been reported, little is known about the influence of riding position on injury characteristics. The purpose of this study was to characterize e-scooter riding positions and their related injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Electrical injuries are a rarely reported complication of scuba diving.
CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old woman wore a 12-volt heated shirt designed for motorcycling, powered by a canister light battery, while scuba diving. A leak in her drysuit allowed water to make contact with an electrified connector from the heated shirt, and she experienced painful electrical shocks. She was able to disconnect the power source and finish the dive, but she developed progressive fevers and dyspnoea several hours later. She was diagnosed with acute lung injury and treated with bronchodilators. Her s

Electrical injuries in pediatric patients are uncommon but can be life-threatening and require efficient and effective identification and management. Injury severity is based on the characteristics of the electricity, the duration of contact with the electrical source, and the current's pathway through the body. This issue discusses the specific threats posed by high-voltage, low-voltage, and lightning injuries. The various presentations are described, including burns, arrhythmias, respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, blunt trauma from falls or blast events, rhabdomyolysis, tympanic membrane ru

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) has been widely adopted to elicit muscle contraction in rehabilitation training after spinal cord injury (SCI). Conventional FES modalities include stimulations coupled with rowing, cycling, assisted walking and other derivatives. In this review, we studied thirteen clinical reports from the past 5 years and evaluated the effects of various FES aided rehabilitation plans on the functional recovery after SCI, highlighting upper and lower extremity strength, cardiopulmonary function, and balder control. We further explored potential mechanisms of FES using

OBJECTIVE: To analyse injuries related to manual and electric scooter use from January 2016 up to and including July 2019.
SETTING: Electric scooter rental services were launched in Denmark in January 2019. The services were provided by private companies. Although rules for handling and riding scooters have been established, no reports either before or after introduction of electric scooters anticipated the full extent of use, and injuries to riders and pedestrians.
PARTICIPANTS: All patient records mentioning manual or electric scooters. Records were reviewed, and data were stratified accor

INTRODUCTION: Muscle force production is usually impaired in people with spinal cord injury (SCI). The use of high-intensity neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) strength training can help promote metabolically active lean muscle mass and, thus, increase muscle mass and improve physical health and quality of life (QoL). Nonetheless, NMES is usually used at low-stimulation intensities, and there is limited evidence on the effects of high-intensity NMES strength training into improving muscle force and mass, symptoms of spasticity, or physical health and QoL in people with SCI.

Upper extremity electrical injuries present with unique pathophysiologic considerations due to the differing mechanisms of injury produced by the electromagnetic field. The initial phase of treatment consists of recognition of other life-threatening injuries, stabilization of patients, and multisystem resuscitation. The second phase of treatment consists of excising devitalized tissue, appropriate wound care to prevent delayed infection, providing temporary and definitive coverage over vital structures, and preventing contracture and joint stiffness via aggressive therapy. The final phase of t

BACKGROUND: Electrical burns are quite different from thermal and chemical burns. This study is from a centre which deals with job related electric burn injuries alone and thus can give a pure account of the electric burns and discuss the related peculiarities. Study aims to highlight the differences in the mechanism of electric burn injury, its mode of presentation, morbidity, complications and thus the treatment strategies as compared to rest of the burn injuries.
METHODS: This is a descriptive case series study of first consecutive 61 electric burn victims treated at a Burn Unit and Plasti

It has been a puzzling forensic task to determine the cause of death as a result of electric shock in the absence of recognizable skin marks or definite postmortem morphological findings. In forensic pathology, while classical macroscopic and microscopic morphology remain core procedures to investigate deaths, a variety of subsidiary measures has been developed and incorporated to detail that pathology. C-fos, one of a small group of genes called primary response genes and its protein product, fos, are crucial elements of complex signaling mechanisms believed to be responsible for cell respons

Electrical injuries often result in extensive tissue damage where vascular damage may occur and result in thrombosis and spontaneous rupture of blood vessels. Rupture of the brachial, radial, ulnar, internal mammary, and obturator arteries has been reported in the literature. The authors present two cases of carotid artery rupture following high-voltage electrical injuries. The first case is a 21-year-old man who was climbing a fence near a high-voltage power line when a gold chain he was wearing around his neck caught on the power line, resulting in a 10% circumferential electrical injury to

BACKGROUND: The number of electrical injuries are rising in proportion to the increased use of electricity in both domestic and industrial sectors. There are multiple ways in which electricity can cause tissue damage, which can be due to direct effects, electroporation and thermal effects. However, these mechanisms fail to explain the enigmatous occurrences of diffuse and delayed neurological and psychological manifestations, especially those remote to the theoretical current pathway and in absence of any gross neurological abnormalities. Immediate neuropsychological sequelae have been well re

In this study, the effects of the electric charges and fields on the viability of airborne microorganisms were investigated. The electric charges of different magnitude and polarity were imparted on airborne microbial cells by a means of induction charging. The airborne microorganisms carrying different electric charge levels were then extracted by an electric mobility analyzer and collected using a microbial sampler. It was found that the viability of Pseudomonas fluorescens bacteria, used as a model for sensitive bacteria, carrying a net charge from 4100 negative to 30 positive elementary ch

Interaction of electrocutaneous stimulation with an impaired human motor control system may result in unstable reflex loops causing excessive spastic reactions. These contractions are usually excluded from analysis since the presence of spasm is one of the criteria commonly applied for discarding a contraction. They may, however, provide interesting information on the nature of spasticity. The dorsiflexor muscles of four SCI subjects were activated by means of surface electrical stimulation and the isometric ankle moment was measured. Short bursts of constant stimulation frequency at seven dif

Over the past decade, the Firefighters' Burn Treatment Unit of the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, has treated 1399 inpatients suffering from thermal injury. Regional burn care is provided in a 10-bed intensive care unit with 18 plastic surgery reconstructive beds for a large referral region of central and northern Alberta, portions of the Northwest Territories, and neighboring provinces of British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Of the total burn inpatients during this period, 74 electrical injuries were treated (5.3% of all admissions): 71 were males (95.9%) and 3 fem

Injuries caused by high-tension electrical current are rare, but pathophysiologically unique with destructive effects. As a form of thermal trauma, electrical injuries represent a connection of skin burns and deep tissue destruction unpredictable in its depth which mostly resembles a crush injury. Emergency treatment measures begin with the separation from the electrical contact if any and prompt transport to the nearest institution with all means for cardiorespiratory resuscitation and complete recovery. Resuscitation of the patient after electric shock continues then with fluid replacement u

Various musculoskeletal abnormalities caused by electrical injury are described. Such abnormalities usually include fractures or dislocation of adjacent bones and joints. Osteonecrosis is a noteworthy, but less common, consequence of electric shock. The case is discussed of a 52-year-old woman who had received an electric shock (220-V alternating household current) to the right hand and developed osteonecrosis in the ipsilateral humeral head, most likely caused by bone "melting." An osteonecrotic lesion may therefore develop in a joint at a distance from the point of electrical contact, and th

A 25-year-old Black man was exposed to an 11 000 V electrical injury. The rapid development of neurogenic pulmonary oedema, haemolysis and disseminated intravascular coagulation is outlined. The importance of early prophylaxis and treatment in order to decrease the high morbidity associated with high-tension injury is stressed. A review of the literature follows.
