Reactivity of isolated bovine facial vessels to electric stimulation and to drugs.

The effects of electric stimulation on isometric force generation of isolated helical strips of bovine facial arteries (BFA) and veins (BFV) were investigated. Whereas BFA always contracted, electrically stimulated BFV showed a biphasic response, i.e. a small, transient contraction followed by an intense relaxation. The findings presented suggest a neurogenic response for the vasodilator component of BFV response to electric stimulation. Exogenous catecholamines and serotonin dilated the veins; the effects were antagonized by propranolol and dihydroergotamine, respectively. Dopamine-induced re

[Respiratory effects of electric stimulation of pancreatic afferents in lightly anesthetized cats].

Electrical stimulation of the pancreatic anterior part produces a respiratory arrest followed by a short polypnea. In some cases (20%) the same effects are obtained by electrical stimulation of the afferent nerves. The afferent fibres involved in this phenomena are situated in the great splanchnic nerves.

Is electric field strength deterministic in cortical neurons' response to transcranial electrical stimulation?

Transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), which modulates cortical excitability via electric currents, has attracted increasing attention because of its application in treating neurologic and psychiatric disorders. To obtain a better understanding of the brain areas affected and stimulation's cellular effects, a multi-scale model was proposed that combines multi-compartmental neuronal models and a head model. While one multi-scale model of tES that used straight axons reported that the direction of electric field (EF) is a determining factor in a neuronal response, another model of transcrani

Relation between the electric field and activation of cortical neurons in transcranial electrical stimulation.

BACKGROUND: To address the brain areas and circuits affected by transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), which had been used widely to treat psychiatric and neurological diseases, the stimulus-induced electric field in the cortex was calculated using a head model that reflects anatomical information. To obtain detailed information at the macroscopic and microscopic levels, multi-scale modeling was proposed that integrates the head model with multi-compartmental models of cortical neurons. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to use multi-scale modeling to describe the relation between the stimulus-induc

Effect of stress induced by electrical stimulation of the hypothalamus on the electrical stability of the heart in rabbits.

The influence of stress on cardiac electrical stability (CES) and chaotic dynamics of the electrical activity of the heart was studied in acute and chronic experiments in rabbits. Stress was caused by 2-3 h daily immobilization of the animals with electrical stimulation of emotiogenic centers of the hypothalamus through implanted electrodes. CES was estimated by the thresholds for ventricular arrhythmia: paroxysmal ventricular tachycardia, repeated ventricular extrasystoles and ventricular fibrillation (VF). The results showed: (i) CES in stressed rabbits was decreased significantly compared w

Conditioning Electrical Stimulation Is Superior to Postoperative Electrical Stimulation in Enhanced Regeneration and Functional Recovery Following Nerve Graft Repair.

Background. Autologous nerve graft is the most common clinical intervention for repairing a nerve gap. However, its regenerative capacity is decreased in part because, unlike a primary repair, the regenerating axons must traverse 2 repair sites. Means to promote nerve regeneration across a graft are needed. Postoperative electrical stimulation (PES) improves nerve growth by reducing staggered regeneration at the coaptation site whereas conditioning electrical stimulation (CES) accelerates axon extension. In this study, we directly compared these electrical stimulation paradigms in a model of n

Comparison of the Effects of Contralaterally Controlled Functional Electrical Stimulation and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation on Upper Extremity Functions in Patients with Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Contralaterally controlled functional electrical stimulation (CCFES) is an innovative method to improve upper extremity functions after stroke. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of CCFES versus neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on the upper extremity functions in patients with stroke. METHODS: Sixty patients with stroke were randomly assigned into CCFES group (n=30) or NMES group (n=30). All patients were also treated with conventional medical treatment and rehabilitation training. Patients in CCFES group received CCFES to the affected wrist extensors while the NMES gro

Multi-channel transorbital electrical stimulation for effective stimulation of posterior retina.

Transorbital electrical stimulation (tES) has been studied as a new noninvasive method for treating intractable eye diseases by delivering weak electrical current to the eye through a pair of electrodes attached to the skin around the eye. Studies have reported that the therapeutic effect of tES is determined by the effective stimulation of retinal cells that are densely distributed in the posterior part of the retina. However, in conventional tES with a pair of electrodes, a greater portion of the electric field is delivered to the anterior part of the retina. In this study, to address this i

Exploring stimulation patterns for electrical stimulation of the larynx using surface electrodes.

PURPOSE: Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is considered an upcoming treatment modality for a number of laryngeal diseases. However, sound data are scarce when it comes to surface FES to treat voice disorders. Aim of the present study was to identify and differentiate suitable surface FES patterns to activate internal laryngeal muscles. METHODS: Non-invasive FES was performed in a cohort of 17 elderly woman. Our user-customized electrical stimulation setup allowed us to deliver ten different stimulation patterns (rectangular and sawtooth shaped) with variation of frequency and amplitude

Functional electrical stimulation: a MatLab based tool for designing stimulation patterns.

We developed user-friendly software that generates stimulation profiles by using user-customized model-based control of walking. The model is a multi-segment structure with pin and ball joints. A pair of an agonist and an antagonistic muscles acts at each joint. Each muscle is modeled by a three-compartment multiplicative model. The control is based on optimization that uses a cost function that minimizes the tracking error of the joint angles and levels of muscles activations. The inputs to the simulation are trajectories and user characteristic model parameters. The outputs of the simulation

Electric field stimulation-responsive hydrogels for bone regeneration: from mechanisms to applications.

The continuous extension of human life expectancy and the global trend of population aging have contributed to a marked increase in the incidence of musculoskeletal diseases, with fractures and osteoporosis being prominent examples. Consequently, promoting bone regeneration is a crucial medical challenge that demands immediate attention. As early as the mid-20th century, researchers revealed that electrical stimulation could effectively promote the healing and regeneration of bone tissue. This is achieved by mimicking the endogenous electric field within bone tissue, which influences cellular

Anisotropic nanorod-integrated magneto-mechano-electric cascade system for neural electrical stimulation.

Piezoelectric materials are now being considered as a potential treatment system for neural electrical stimulation. However, their therapeutic efficacy is limited by insufficient electrical outputs, which are generated by cellular forces and/or tissue motions. Herein, we constructed a high-efficiency magneto-mechano-electric cascade system with magnetic field (MF)-driven wireless electrical stimulation. The anisotropic Fe3O4 nanorod (RFO)-integrated poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) copolymer (PVDF-TrFE) fibrous scaffold (PT-RFO) with enhanced piezoelectric β-phase content was pre

Non-Invasive Electric and Magnetic Brain Stimulation for the Treatment of Fibromyalgia.

Although fibromyalgia is defined by its core muscular nociceptive component, it also includes multiple dysfunctions that involve the musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, immune, endocrine, as well as the central and peripheral nervous systems, amongst others. The pathogenic involvement of the nervous system and the numerous neurological and neuroinflammatory symptoms of this disease may benefit from neuromodulatory stimulation techniques that have been shown to be effective and safe in diverse nervous system pathologies. In this systematic review, we outline current evidence showing the potentia

Robust enhancement of motor sequence learning with 4 mA transcranial electric stimulation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Motor learning experiments with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) at 2 mA have produced mixed results. We hypothesize that tDCS boosts motor learning provided sufficiently high field intensity on the motor cortex. METHODS: In a single-blinded design, 108 healthy participants received either anodal (N = 36) or cathodal (N = 36) tDCS at 4 mA total, or no stimulation (N = 36) while they practiced a 12-min sequence learning task. Anodal stimulation was delivered across four electrode pairs (1 mA each), with anodes above the right parietal lobe and cathodes

Cochlear Implantation and Electric Acoustic Stimulation in Children With TMPRSS3 Genetic Mutation.

BACKGROUND: Mutations in the TMPRSS3 gene, although rare, can cause high frequency hearing loss with residual hearing at low frequencies. Several previous studies have reported cochlear implant (CI) outcomes for adults with TMPRSS3 mutation with mixed results. Although some studies have suggested that TMPRSS3 is expressed in spiral ganglion cells, it remains unclear if previously reported poor CI outcomes in this population were secondary to long durations of deafness or to the effects of the TMPRSS3 mutation. To date, no studies in the literature have reported CI outcomes for children with TM

Response of Mouse Visual Cortical Neurons to Electric Stimulation of the Retina.

Retinal prostheses strive to restore vision to the blind by electrically stimulating the neurons that survive the disease process. Clinical effectiveness has been limited however, and much ongoing effort is devoted toward the development of improved stimulation strategies, especially ones that better replicate physiological patterns of neural signaling. Here, to better understand the potential effectiveness of different stimulation strategies, we explore the responses of neurons in the primary visual cortex to electric stimulation of the retina. A 16-channel implantable microprobe was used to
