N-back electroencephalography asymmetry and peripheral immune cell subpopulation composition.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive deficits such as working memory impairment and peripheral inflammation frequently occur together in neuropsychiatric conditions, yet the relationship between them remains poorly understood. To address this gap, the present study examines these associations in healthy young adults to establish baseline relationships between peripheral immune cell subpopulations and neural activity without clinical confounds. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the relative proportions of peripheral immune cell subpopulations are associated with EEG asymmetry during a working

Electroencephalography-Based Clustering Reveals Robust Neurophysiological Subtypes in Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is clinically heterogeneous, with substantial variability in motor and cognitive features. Conventional clinical scales provide limited insight into underlying neural mechanisms and show poor longitudinal stability. Scalp electroencephalography (EEG) offers a direct and scalable measure of brain activity that may support mechanistically informed stratification of PD, yet EEG-based subtyping remains largely unexplored. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether EEG-derived features can identify neurophysiological subtypes of PD and to examine their clinical and genet

Stereo-electroencephalography-guided responsive neuromodulation: A propensity-matched cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: The optimal pre-implantation evaluation and surgical targeting strategies for responsive neurostimulation (RNS) in patients with unresectable, drug-resistant focal epilepsy continue to be debated. Although stereo-electroencephalography (sEEG) is central to characterizing the seizure-onset zone, its role in preoperative testing for neuromodulation remains undefined. We examined whether sEEG-guided targeting for RNS implantation confers seizure-reduction benefit compared with RNS implantation without sEEG. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent RNS implantation a

Electroencephalography-guided transcranial direct current stimulation improves picture-naming performance.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a potential method for improving verbal function by stimulating Broca's area. Previous studies have shown the effectiveness of using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to optimize the stimulation site, but it is unclear whether similar optimization can be achieved using scalp electroencephalography (EEG). Here, we investigated whether tDCS targeting a brain area identified by EEG can improve verbalization performance during a picture-naming task. In Experiment 1, EEG and fMRI data were acquired during a naming task with 21 participant

Age-specific electroencephalography dynamics during anesthesia: monitoring and neurocognitive implications.

Electroencephalography (EEG) reflects thalamocortical activity during anesthesia, but its signatures vary markedly with age. Alpha oscillations emerge in late infancy, peak in childhood, and decline with aging, producing substantial bias in processed EEG (pEEG) indices derived mainly from adult data. This narrative review summarizes age-specific EEG dynamics under γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic anesthesia, highlighting developmental and aging trajectories, age effects on pEEG reliability, and associations with postoperative delirium (POD), emergence agitation (EA), and recovery outcomes. Electroencephalography-Based Neuroinflammation Diagnosis and Its Role in Learning Disabilities.

Background/Objectives: Learning disabilities (LDs) are complex neurodevelopmental conditions influenced by genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. Recent research suggests that maternal autoimmune conditions, perinatal stress, and vitamin D deficiency may contribute to neuroinflammation, which, in turn, can disrupt brain development. Chronic neuroinflammation, driven by activated microglia and astrocytes, has been associated with synaptic dysfunction and cognitive impairment, potentially impacting learning and memory processes. This study aims to explore the relationship between neuroi

Electroencephalography Changes During Cybersickness: Focusing on Delta and Alpha Waves.

Virtual reality (VR) is an immersive technology capable of simulating alternate realities, however, it often leads to cybersickness, causing discomfort for users. We conducted an experiment using a group of 30 participants (aged 25 ± 2.1 years) to see the alpha and delta wave changes for three conditions: Blank, Video, and Video Pause, with electroencephalography (EEG) recordings. The experiments were repeated three times (Trial 1, Trial 2, and Trial 3). The results showed a significant increase in delta wave power for Video compared with the Blank (p < 0.05). Video Pause showed a significant

Melatonin vs. dexmedetomidine for sleep induction in children before electroencephalography.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In children requiring electroencephalography (EEG), sleep recording can provide crucial information. As EEG recordings during spontaneous sleep are not always possible, pharmacological sleep-inducing agents are sometimes required. The aim of the study was to evaluate safety and efficacy of melatonin (Mel) and dexmedetomidine (Dex; intranasal and sublingual application) for sleep induction prior to EEG. METHODS: In this prospective randomized study, 156 consecutive patients aged 1-19 years were enrolled and randomized by draw into melatonin group (Mel; n = 54; dose:

Electroencephalography Biomarkers of α5-GABA Positive Allosteric Modulators in Rodents.

BACKGROUND: Reduced cortical inhibition mediated by GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is reported in depression, anxiety disorders, and aging. A novel positive allosteric modulator that specifically targets the α5-GABAA receptor subunit (α5-PAM), ligand GL-II-73 shows anxiolytic, antidepressant, and procognitive effects without the common side effects associated with nonspecific modulation by benzodiazepines such as diazepam, thus suggesting novel therapeutic potential. However, it is unknown whether α5-PAM has detectable signatures in clinically relevant brain electroencephalography (EEG). METH

Temporal encephalocele: An epileptogenic focus confirmed by direct intracranial electroencephalography.

Several studies have suggested the epileptogenic potential of temporal encephaloceles. However, there is limited literature describing the results of intracranial EEG monitoring for patients with temporal encephaloceles. We describe a 19 year-old right-handed woman with drug-resistant epilepsy who presented with seizure onset at age 16 in the setting of a left temporal encephalocele where the seizure onset zone was confirmed to be the encephalocele via stereo EEG (sEEG). She had focal impaired awareness seizures occurring weekly that would progress to focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures m

Continuous electroencephalography (cEEG) in infants with congenital heart disease (CHD).

BACKGROUND: Neonates with congenital heart disease (CHD) undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery have increased risk of impaired neurodevelopmental outcomes secondary to brain injury. This study aims to characterize pre- and post-operative continuous EEG (cEEG) patterns to detect abnormal cerebral activity in infants with CHD and investigate whether an association exists between the degree of encephalopathy in pre- and post-operative cEEG. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study conducted between 2010 and 2018 at a tertiary hospital in Cleveland, OH included infants with CHD with cEE

Personalized clinical managements through exploring circulating neural cells and electroencephalography.

BACKGROUND: Since an initial diagnosis of Alzheimer disease (AD) in 1907, early detection, was unavailable through 116 years. Up-regulation of V-Ets erythroblastosis virus E26 oncogene homolog 2 (Ets2) is capable to enhance neuronal susceptibility and degeneration. Protein expression (PE) of Ets2 has functional impact on AD and Down's syndrome, with diverse intensity. PE of Ets2 has an influential pathogenic impact on AD. Clinical aspects of neurological disorders directly interact with psychological maladies. However, deterioration requires an early management including programmed based prote

Evaluation of electroencephalography biomarkers for Angelman syndrome during overnight sleep.

Angelman syndrome (AS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by loss-of-function mutations in the maternal copy of the UBE3A gene. AS is characterized by intellectual disability, impaired speech and motor skills, epilepsy, and sleep disruptions. Multiple treatment strategies to re-express functional neuronal UBE3A from the dormant paternal allele were successful in rodent models of AS and have now moved to early phase clinical trials in children. Developing reliable and objective AS biomarkers is essential to guide the design and execution of current and future clinical trials. Our prior wor

Early detection of brainstem herniation using electroencephalography monitoring - case report.

BACKGROUND: Continuous electroencephalography (cEEG) is an important neuromonitoring tool in brain injured patients. It is commonly used for detection of seizure but can also be used to monitor changes in cerebral blood flow. One such event that can cause a change in cerebral blood flow is imminent, cerebral herniation. cEEG monitoring and quantitative electroencephalography (QEEG) can be used as neurotelemetry to detect cerebral herniation prior to onset of clinical signs. CASE PRESENTATION: We discuss two cases highlighting the use of cEEG in cerebral herniation accompanied by clinical exam

Novel bifunctional cap for simultaneous electroencephalography and transcranial electrical stimulation.

Neuromodulation induced by transcranial electric stimulation (TES) exhibited promising potential for clinical practice. However, the underlying mechanisms remain subject of research. The combination of TES and electroencephalography (EEG) offers great potential for investigating these mechanisms and brain function in general, especially when performed simultaneously. In conventional applications, the combination of EEG and TES suffers from limitations on the electrode level (gel for electrode-skin interface) and the usability level (preparation time, reproducibility of positioning).
