[A case of lateral cleft lip. Embryology and surgical technic].

Lateral labial cleft is exceptionally rare. This malformation gives the opportunity to evaluate its origin (following the embryology of facial segments) and its association with other deformities. Surgical treatment must reconstruct an anatomic and functional situation which must give a good aestetic result.

One Embryology: impactful connections between human- and wildlife-assisted reproduction.

PURPOSE: Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) in humans have evolved from early experimental work into a globally established clinical field, with animal research providing the foundation for their development and continuous refinement. This review examines the reciprocal relationship between human and animal ART and considers how a broader "One Embryology" framework may benefit both reproductive medicine and wildlife conservation. METHODS: The historical and contemporary connections between human, domestic animal, and wildlife ART are reviewed, with particular consideration of comparativ

The infraorbital vein: embryology, anatomy, histology, variations, and clinical relevance.

The infraorbital vein (IOV) is a small but clinically important component of the deep midfacial venous system, linking the infraorbital region, orbit, and infratemporal fossa. Despite its close association with the infraorbital nerve and artery, the IOV remains inconsistently described and systematically undercharacterized in the literature. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the embryology, anatomy, variations, and clinical relevance of the IOV to provide a clinically oriented framework. Embryologically, the IOV derives primarily from the primitive maxillary vein, with vari

The Company of Biologists and the Woods Hole Embryology Course.

As part of the 100th birthday celebrations of our publisher, The Company of Biologists, we are reflecting on Development's association with another longstanding institution: the Woods Hole Embryology Course. The Embryology Course has been running since 1893 at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) in Woods Hole, USA. Situated on sandy shores where bioluminescent creatures bloom in the summer, Woods Hole is known as a place where imaginations can run wild, and students can encounter organisms that carry out development in ways that are both unfamiliar and thought-provoking. This famous program

Exploring Visualisation for Embryology Education: A Twenty-First-Century Perspective.

Embryology and congenital malformations play a key role in multiple medical specialties including obstetrics and paediatrics. The process of learning clinical embryology involves two basic principles; firstly, understanding time-sensitive morphological changes that happen in the developing embryo and, secondly, appreciating the clinical implications of congenital conditions when development varies from the norm. Visualising the sequence of dynamic events in embryonic development is likely to be challenging for students, as these processes occur not only in three dimensions but also in the four

Air quality in the clinical embryology laboratory: a mini-review.

The scope of the clinical embryology laboratory has expanded over recent years. It now includes conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF) techniques and complex and time-demanding procedures like blastocyst culture, processing of surgically retrieved sperm, and trophectoderm biopsy for preimplantation genetic testing. These procedures require a stable culture environment in which ambient air quality might play a critical role. The existing data indicate that both particulate matter and chemical pollution adversely affect IVF results, with low levels for better outcomes. As a result, IVF clinic

The thymus: General concepts on embryology, anatomy, histology and immunohistochemistry.

A fundamental aspect that is commonly overlook when assessing thymic tumors is the normal histology and immunohistochemical features of the normal thymus. Given the fact that most epithelial tumors occur in the adult population, it is only rarely that we are confronted with assessing normal immunohistochemistry of the thymus. However, we consider that such knowledge is of utmost importance is assessing pathological conditions including epithelial tumors or tumors of other lineages. Therefore, in this writing we have concentrated our efforts in providing an overview of the embryology and anatom

Aberrant right subclavian artery: embryology, prenatal diagnosis and clinical significance.

INTRODUCTION: The right subclavian artery normally arises as the first vessel from the brachiocephalic trunk. An aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) arises directly from the aortic arch and crosses behind the trachea towards the right arm. This variant occurs in approximately 1-2% of the population; however, the frequency increases in individuals with chromosomal abnormalities such as trisomy 21 and 22q11.2 microdeletion. Prenatal identification of ARSA therefore has a role in screening for such conditions. METHODS: Databases were searched for studies reporting the prenatal ultrasound eva

Embryology of Spinal Dysraphism and its Relationship to Surgical Treatment.

Spinal dysraphism is an umbrella term that encompasses a number of congenital malformations that affect the central nervous system. The etiology of these conditions can be traced back to a specific defect in embryological development, with the more disabling malformations occurring at an earlier gestational age. A thorough understanding of the relevant neuroembryology is imperative for clinicians to select the correct treatment and prevent complications associated with spinal dysraphism. This paper will review the neuroembryology associated with the various forms of spinal dysraphism and provi

The incidence, embryology, and oculofacial abnormalities associated with eyelid colobomas.

PURPOSE: To describe a cohort of patients with congenital eyelid coloboma, to identify associated ocular and craniofacial abnormalities, and to establish any correlation between the size and location of eyelid colobomas and the presence of such abnormalities. METHODS: An observational case series of 55 patients with eyelid coloboma treated by a single surgeon (JROC) between 1985 and 2005. RESULTS: Eyelid colobomas predominantly affected the upper lids (93%), and were typically unilateral (76%). About a third (29%) were an isolated finding, with the remainder associated with other ocular (62%

Parapharyngeal cyst: considerations on embryology, clinical evaluation, and surgical management.

Branchial cleft anomalies represent a common cause of cervical mass in adults. Describing a case report, we reviewed embryology, clinical elements, and treatment options for parapharyngeal congenital cysts. A case of a parapharyngeal cyst mimicking a tonsillar abscess is presented. A second branchial cleft cyst was hypothesized on a clinical and radiologic basis and then confirmed by histologic data. Magnetic resonance imaging provided fundamental information for the study of the parapharyngeal mass and its relationship with surrounding structures. In literature, surgical excision is the recom

Embryology of extra- and intrahepatic bile ducts, the ductal plate.

In the human embryo, the first anlage of the bile ducts and the liver is the hepatic diverticulum or liver bud. For up to 8 weeks of gestation, the extrahepatic biliary tree develops through lengthening of the caudal part of the hepatic diverticulum. This structure is patent from the beginning and remains patent and in continuity with the developing liver at all stages. The hepatic duct (ductus hepaticus) develops from the cranial part (pars hepatica) of the hepatic diverticulum. The distal portions of the right and left hepatic ducts develop from the extrahepatic ducts and are clearly defined

Coronary artery anomalies. Part I: Recent insights from molecular embryology.

Congenital anomalies of the coronary arteries occur in 0.2-1.2% of the general population and may cause substantial cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We review some of the advances that have been made both, in the understanding of the embryonic development of the coronary arteries (part I) and in the clinical diagnosis and management of their anomalies (part II). In this first part of our review we elucidate basic mechanisms of coronary vasculogenesis, angiogenesis and embryonic arteriogenesis. Moreover, we review the role of cellular progenitors such as epicardium-derived cells, cardiac

Common congenital anomalies of the neck. Embryology and surgical anatomy.

A good knowledge of embryology and surgical anatomy allows for the anticipation of intraoperative findings, and, hence, for safer and more efficient care of patients with congenital anomalies of the neck. Presumptive thyroglossal anomalies that are at or above the level of the hyoid mandate extra vigilance: the patient may not have sufficient thyroid tissue in the usual thyroid location. The discontinuous character of thyroglossal tracts, related to ontogenesis, ordains dissection to the lingual mucosa. First branchial cleft cysts and fistulas require knowledge of facial nerve anatomy; in some

[Pulmonary valve aplasia with ventricular septal defect. Hemodynamics and embryology].

The combination of absent pulmonary valve with ventricular septal defect, subvalvular pulmonic stenosis and aneurysm of the pulmonary artery presents a characteristic heamodynamic and clinical profile. It should be differentiated from other morphologically related cardiovascular malformations. According to the degree of right ventricular outflow tract obstruction, the circulatory pattern and the clinical picture is varying widely. We are differentiating an obstructive and a congestive form of the disease. An own case is demonstrated. After a short review of the literature the clinical and haem
