High-resolution magnetic resonance histology of the embryonic and neonatal mouse: a 4D atlas and morphologic database.

Engineered mice play an ever-increasing role in defining connections between genotype and phenotypic expression. The potential of magnetic resonance microscopy (MRM) for morphologic phenotyping in the mouse has previously been demonstrated; however, applications have been limited by long scan times, availability of the technology, and a foundation of normative data. This article describes an integrated environment for high-resolution study of normal, transgenic, and mutant mouse models at embryonic and neonatal stages. Three-dimensional images are shown at an isotropic resolution of 19.5 micro

Unique finding of prostatic tissue in a benign cystic ovarian teratoma.

Benign cystic ovarian teratomas are neoplasms with a 46,XX karyotype originating from a single abnormal ovarian germ cell after the first meiotic division. Since these tumors lack the Y chromosome (required for production of the H-Y antigen that is presumably obligatory for embryonic male sexual differentiation), identifiable male sex organ structures should not be found in the tumor. We report a case in which prostatic tissue was identified in a benign cystic ovarian teratoma.

Caudal duplication syndrome: more evidence for theory of caudal twinning.

Caudal duplication syndrome is a rare entity in which structures derived from the embryonic cloaca and notochord are duplicated to various extents. The term encompasses a spectrum and often is quoted as one type of incomplete separation of monovular twins. The authors present more evidence giving credence to caudal twining as the mechanism behind the syndrome. The authors report successful surgical management of a full-term infant with a constellation of anomalies of caudal duplication syndrome.

Congenital bone anomalies associated with lipomas.

Congenital bone anomalies are occasionally located adjacent to deep lipomas. These bone dysplasias may take the form of localized overgrowth or osseous malformation. Two patients with iliac anomalies and spinal dysraphism and one with a hypertrophied rib and vertebra associated with lipomas are described. As both the lipomas and osseous anomalies tend to lie in the same sensory nerve distribution, there may be a common embryonic neural dysfunction affecting formation and subsequent growth of these structures.

A deep learning-enhanced surface acoustic wave platform for contact-free in situ biomechanical characterization of embryos.

Understanding the mechanical strength of embryos is essential for evaluating their viability in developmental biology. This study introduces a novel biosensor designed for in situ, non-contact mechanical characterization. The platform offers several unique contributions, including: (1) a microfluidic system combining SAW and deep learning for the automated quantification of embryonic mechanical strength; (2) a quantitative fitting model relating SAW power to acoustic radiation force for precise mechanical loading; (3) the first quantitative atlas of embryonic mechanical thresholds, achieved th

Remodeling of chick embryonic ventricular myoarchitecture under experimentally changed loading conditions.

Adult myocardium adapts to changing functional demands by hyper- or hypotrophy while the developing heart reacts by hyper- or hypoplasia. How embryonic myocardial architecture adjusts to experimentally altered loading is not known. We subjected the chick embryonic hearts to mechanically altered loading to study its influence upon ventricular myoarchitecture. Chick embryonic hearts were subjected to conotruncal banding (increased afterload model), or left atrial ligation or clipping, creating a combined model of increased preload in right ventricle and decreased preload in left ventricle. Expression of L1 and N-CAM cell adhesion molecules during development of the mouse olfactory system.

The expression of the neural adhesion molecules L1 and N-CAM has been studied in the embryonic and early postnatal olfactory system of the mouse in order to gain insight into the function of these molecules during development of a neural structure which retains neuronal turnover capacities throughout adulthood. N-CAM was slightly expressed and L1 was not significantly expressed in the olfactory placode on Embryonic Day 9, the earliest stage tested. Rather, N-CAM was strongly expressed in the mesenchyme underlying the olfactory placode. In the developing nasal pit, L1 and N-CAM were detectable

IVF with or without ICSI and the impact on human embryonic brain development: the Rotterdam Periconceptional Cohort.

STUDY QUESTION: Does IVF with or without ICSI (IVF/ICSI) treatment impact the development of embryonic brain structures? SUMMARY ANSWER: Our results show associations between IVF/ICSI treatment, smoking and slightly increased sizes of early human embryonic brain structures. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The number of IVF/ICSI procedures is increasing worldwide and is associated with higher risks of obstetric and perinatal complications in pregnancies. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: One hundred seventy-five women with a singleton pregnancy were included in the Rotterdam Periconceptional Cohort (Pred

Retinopathy of prematurity: clinic and pathogenesis. Disproportion between apoptosis of vitreal and proliferation of retinal vascularization.

The structure of adult human vitreous condensations (tractus, membranelles) corresponds to the structure of obliterated embryonal vasa hyaloidea. Some embryonal hyaloidal vessels and structures extend from the tunica vasculosa lentis and attach to the retina between the equator and ora serrata. In normal fetal development, these hyaloidal vessels and structures successively disappear because of apoptosis. The lower the birth weight of a premature infant, the higher the risk of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) due to the disproportion between the regression of vasa hyaloidea (hyaloideoretinal a

A spatial-temporal map of glutamatergic neurogenesis in the murine embryonic cerebellar nuclei uncovers a high degree of cellular heterogeneity.

The nuclei are the main output structures of the cerebellum. Each and every cerebellar cortical computation reaches several areas of the brain by means of cerebellar nuclei processing and integration. Nevertheless, our knowledge of these structures is still limited compared to the cerebellar cortex. Here, we present a mouse genetic inducible fate-mapping study characterizing rhombic lip-derived glutamatergic neurons of the nuclei, the most conspicuous family of long-range cerebellar efferent neurons. Glutamatergic neurons mainly occupy dorsal and lateral territories of the lateral and interpos

Comparative development of the mammalian isocortex and the reptilian dorsal ventricular ridge. Evolutionary considerations.

There has been a long debate about a possible homology between parts of the dorsal ventricular ridge (DVR) of reptiles and birds, and parts of the mammalian isocortex. Correspondence between these structures was originally proposed on the basis of connectional similarities between the DVR of birds and the mammalian auditory and extrastriate visual isocortical areas. Furthermore, the proposal of homology includes the possible embryological similarity of cells that give rise to the DVR and cells that give rise to the isocortex. Against this concept it has been claimed that the DVR and the isocor

In vitro cellular reprogramming to model gonad development and its disorders.

During embryonic development, mutually antagonistic signaling cascades determine gonadal fate toward a testicular or ovarian identity. Errors in this process result in disorders of sex development (DSDs), characterized by discordance between chromosomal, gonadal, and anatomical sex. The absence of an appropriate, accessible in vitro system is a major obstacle in understanding mechanisms of sex-determination/DSDs. Here, we describe protocols for differentiation of mouse and human pluripotent cells toward gonadal progenitors. Transcriptomic analysis reveals that the in vitro-derived murine gonad

Lineage Tracing Reveals the Dynamic Contribution of Id2+ Progenitor Cells to Branching Morphogenesis.

Branching morphogenesis is an important process in shaping the arborized structures of several organs. However, the driving force that directs this process from progenitor pools remains incompletely understood. In this lineage tracing study, we investigated the role of Id2+ embryonic progenitor cells in branching organs such as the pancreas, kidney, mammary gland, thyroid gland, and salivary gland. We found that a subset of Id2+ distal progenitor cells in the embryonic pancreas and kidney can give rise to multiple lineages of progeny cells during branching morphogenesis. Id2-labeled cells also

Laser ablation of embryonic veins in children.

BACKGROUND: Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) and related overgrowth syndromes are rare conditions that often present to academic pediatric units and multidisciplinary vascular anomaly clinics. These conditions are commonly associated with abnormalities of the superficial and deep venous structures and carry an increased risk of venous thromboembolism. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was completed of all patients treated at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital with endovenous laser ablation therapy (EVLT) for management of dilated embryonic veins in the setting of limb overgrowth. Embryonic paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: An embryonic paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma is a very rare mesenchymal tumor. It is an intrascrotal tumor that is localized in paratesticular structures such as the epididymis or spermatic cord. Rhabdomyosarcoma is most often observed in children and adolescents, presenting as a painless scrotal mass. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient was an 18-year-old Moroccan man who presented with a painless left scrotal mass that had evolved over four months. An inguinal orchiectomy was performed. A histological examination of the excised tissue revealed an embryonic rhabdomyosarcoma. Our pati

Persistent primitive trigeminal artery: a review.

The trigeminal artery is the largest of the fetal carotid-basilar anastomotic arteries, and it persists for the longest embryonic period. The artery usually involutes after the development of the posterior communicating artery. The exact causes of persistence of this primitive vessel into adulthood are not completely clear. Angiographic and anatomical descriptions of the various persistent trigeminal artery (PTA) configurations and their relation to the remainder of the cerebrovascular tree and the other surrounding structures have been reported. Persistent trigeminal artery can be associated

Self-formation of functional adenohypophysis in three-dimensional culture.

The adenohypophysis (anterior pituitary) is a major centre for systemic hormones. At present, no efficient stem-cell culture for its generation is available, partly because of insufficient knowledge about how the pituitary primordium (Rathke's pouch) is induced in the embryonic head ectoderm. Here we report efficient self-formation of three-dimensional adenohypophysis tissues in an aggregate culture of mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells. ES cells were stimulated to differentiate into non-neural head ectoderm and hypothalamic neuroectoderm in adjacent layers within the aggregate, and treated with

Peritoneal bands: a review of anatomical distribution and clinical implications.

The complexity of embryological development of the gastrointestinal tract and mesentery provides a platform for the formation of a wide variety of variant veils, folds, and membranes, collectively termed peritoneal bands. These structures, which represent anatomically unabsorbed portions of the omentum and mesentery, although often benign, have the potential to cause clinically significant manifestations in both the neonate and adult. Although these deviant structures may be identified over a broad range of the abdominal cavity, they are most commonly identified in the regions of the duodenum,

Revisiting visual dysfunctions in schizophrenia from the retina to the cortical cells: A manifestation of defective neurodevelopment.

This review highlights morphological and functional anomalies found along the entire visual pathway in schizophrenia, from the retina to the cortex. Based on the evidence of widespread anatomical and functional visual abnormalities, we posited that a neurodevelopmental anomaly occurring early in life was likely to explain those. Incidentally, support to the neurodevelopmental theory of schizophrenia is strongly emerging from many neurobiological domains. In vertebrates, the first visual structures migrate toward the orbit position at the end of the fourth week of gestation. A neurodevelopmenta
