Effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on potential health emergencies in paediatric patients: a retrospective cohort study.

The COVID-19 pandemic compromised the principles underlying the functioning of public health, which is understood as the prevention of diseases and care for the health of entire communities. During the pandemic period, the efforts of the health system focused on patients with suspected infection and those infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which led to changes in the provision of health services and the characteristics of patients receiving medical services at the pre-hospital stage. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on potential health emerge

"It's why I'm the doctor that I am": a qualitative study of the long-term outcomes of a longitudinal service-learning medical education program.

BACKGROUND: Service-learning (SL) is widely used in medical education to promote structural competency and engagement with underserved communities. However, most SL evaluations focus on short-term outcomes, leaving limited understanding of whether these experiences shape physicians' perspectives and practice over time. This study examined the long-term impact of the Urban Medicine (UMed) Program, a longitudinal service-learning program, on graduates' professional development and commitment to health equity. METHODS: A retrospective qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured intervi

Biosurveillance and the Opioid Crisis in Emergency Medicine: Qualitative Study of Physician Perspectives.

BACKGROUND: In 2017, the US Department of Health and Human Services declared a national opioid crisis. In 2022, an estimated 81,806 overdose deaths involved an opioid. Emergency departments are critical in the pathway of care for providing resources and linkages to services. Studies investigating emergency medicine (EM) physicians' perspectives on the opioid crisis have largely focused on prescribing. OBJECTIVES: To investigate EM physicians' perspectives on response strategies to the opioid crisis of biosurveillance and linkages to care. A secondary objective was to map reported challenges a

Implementing a Multidisciplinary Post-COVID Clinic in a Small Community Environment.

The emergence of Post-Acute Sequelae of Sars Cov-2 (PASC), also known as long-COVID, has prompted response from the medical community with research in how to treat patient's symptoms, and in some places, development of post-COVID clinics. Publications about PASC clinics thus far have been in large academic research centers, which have access to many specialists, yet only treat a small amount of the US population. Our hospital system was able to develop a multidisciplinary post-COVID clinic in a small rural community using a PM&R (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation) physician lead, and the an

Mobile service delivery in response to the opioid epidemic in Philadelphia.

BACKGROUND: The harms of opioid use disorder (OUD) and HIV infection disproportionately impact marginalized populations, especially people experiencing homelessness and people who inject drugs (PWID). Mobile OUD service delivery models are emerging to increase access and reduce barriers to OUD care. While there is growing interest in these models, there is limited research about the services they provide, how they operate, and what barriers they face. We characterize the capacity, barriers, and sustainment of mobile OUD care services in a large city with a high incidence of OUD and HIV. METHO

Addressing organizational risk factors and interventions during transitions of care for older patients: a systematic umbrella review.

BACKGROUND: The global aging population presents significant challenges for healthcare systems, with projections indicating that by 2050, individuals aged 65 and above will total 1.6 billion. Older adults, often experience chronic conditions and face frequent transitions in care, which can result in fragmented care and increased risks. Communication issues, poor discharge planning, and lack of standardized procedures contribute to patient safety concerns during these transitions. Addressing such risks through effective organizational interventions is crucial for improving patient outcomes. Exi

Barriers to oral health service access for rural and remote Australian children: a mixed-methods systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Children living in rural and remote communities experience challenges in dental care access. While several studies have reported barriers contributing to inequalities in services utilisation, a synthesis of evidence is lacking for those underserved children. In this review we explore the barriers and challenges to accessing oral health services among children and families living in rural and remote Australia. METHODS: This review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for mixed-methods systematic review. We structured our review question using the PICO framework (popul

Filmless in 60 days: the impact of picture archiving and communications systems within a large urban hospital.

Many large urban hospitals converting to filmless radiography use a phased approach for digital imaging implementation. In fact, this strategy often is recommended by picture archival communication systems (PACS) experts and vendors alike for large, busy hospitals installing PACS in existing physical facilities. The concern is that comprehensive conversion from film-based to digital imaging may be too overwhelming an adjustment in operations for a medical staff to effectively handle without serious disruption of workflow for patient treatment and care. An Alabama-tailored human trafficking response protocol within the Community, Advocacy, Law, and Medicine framework: a state-adaptable model.

Human trafficking is a major public health and human rights concern associated with high rates of psychiatric disorders, substance use disorders, chronic medical illness, and ongoing exposure to trauma. Patients frequently encounter healthcare systems while still experiencing exploitation, yet trafficking often goes unrecognized. Healthcare professionals are uniquely positioned to identify trafficking and facilitate access to recovery-oriented services. This manuscript describes the development and content of a trauma-informed healthcare response protocol designed to guide Alabama clinicians i

Loneliness among older adults in Europe: time to integrate health and social care.

Loneliness is a major concern for public health in contemporary societies. Older adults are particularly vulnerable to loneliness because of their reduced social connections following life changes, such as retirement. Loneliness is often investigated and discussed together with social isolation. While social isolation implies an actual lack of social connections, loneliness implies a perceived deficit of social relations regardless of the real amount of social contacts. However, since living alone may lead to loneliness, individuals can experience both loneliness and social isolation together.

Integrating Primary Health Care into Flexible Surge Capacity: Bridging the Subnational "Missing Middle" in Health Emergency Preparedness.

Health emergencies are governed nationally but experienced locally, where primary health care (PHC) plays a central role in maintaining essential services, surveillance, medication access, chronic disease management, communication, and recovery. Flexible surge capacity (FSC) was developed as a cross-sector approach for identifying and preparing additional personnel, facilities, supplies, systems, and community capabilities, but PHC has not been explicitly integrated into the concept. This narrative conceptual review examined how emergency-ready PHC can be incorporated into FSC at the subnation
