Economic insecurity and suicide vulnerability among women in China.

This study examines the relationship between multidimensional economic insecurity, structural socioeconomic change, and female suicide vulnerability in China. The analysis employs a qualitative secondary-data approach using annual national time-series data for China covering 2000-2024, sourced from the World Health Organization Mortality Database, World Bank World Development Indicators, and International Labour Organization labour statistics. Descriptive trend and comparative analyses supported by graphical visualisation techniques were used to examine patterns and associations among the vari

Barriers to obtaining employment for people with severe mental illness experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: The rate of unemployment among homeless people is estimated to exceed 80%. A high prevalence of mental illness partially explains this figure, but few studies about the relationship between employment and homelessness have focused on homeless people with mental illness. AIM: The present study explores the self-reported barriers to employment in a sample of individuals with mental illness when they were homeless. METHODS: A sample of 27 individuals with mental illness and recent experiences of homelessness, who had expressed an interest in working, participated in semi-structured

Factors related to sustainable employment of people with acquired brain injury or spinal cord injury: The employer's perspective.

BACKGROUND: Of those people with an acquired brain injury (ABI) or spinal cord injury (SCI) who initially successfully returned to paid employment, some exit the workforce before reaching official retirement age. Employers play a central role in ensuring a sustainable work situation for employees with a disability and in preventing such exits. However, the factors and mechanisms involved from the employer's perspective are still poorly understood. PURPOSE: The purpose was to determine factors which, from employer's perspective, have a particularly positive or negative influence on sustainable

Employer Experiences and Perspectives of Autistic Employees in Competitive Integrated Employment.

The present study explored how the Missouri Employer Perspectives Study examined employer perspectives of autistic employees in competitive integrated employment, their experience with autistic employees, and types of support and services needed to accommodate autistic employees. The Missouri Employer Perspectives Study conducted a cross-sectional online survey (Creswell in: Qualitative inquiry & research design: Choosing among five approaches, Sage, 2012). The survey included demographic measures (e.g., gender, ethnicity, length at position, industry-type, etc.), existing and researcher-devel

Evaluating the Impact of Integrated Practical Placement Programmes on Students With Intellectual Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Integrated Practical Placement (IPP) programmes provide students with intellectual disability an opportunity to undertake extended work placement while concurrently studying a course. These programmes showed improved (2-3 folds) employment outcomes compared to non-integrated programmes, which highlighted the need to expand these offerings. METHOD: This study evaluates a range of IPP programmes, exploring variations, their impact and understanding experiences of the participants and exploring the impact of workplace training as a non-traditional educational experience. RESULTS: Fi

"These are people just like us who can work": Overcoming clinical resistance and shifting views in the implementation of Individual Placement and Support (IPS).

PURPOSE: Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is a recovery-based approach to support people with mental health difficulties back into employment. Embedding of IPS within the mental health Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) is a key component of IPS fidelity; however, few studies have examined how those involved with IPS implementation navigate this process. This article explores how IPS Employment Specialists (ES) and Occupational Therapist (OT) Managers integrated and embedded IPS within traditionally-oriented MDTs as part of a national reform program in the Republic of Ireland. METHODS: The s

Comparison of Black and White participants with severe mental illness in response to cognitive remediation as an augmentation of vocational rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: Despite evidence that cognitive remediation improves cognitive and employment outcomes in persons with severe mental illnesses (SMI), its effects have not been systematically compared between Black and White participants. Considering that Black adults have more negative experiences receiving mental health treatment, providers may have greater difficulty engaging and retaining Black Americans in cognitive remediation. Due to the effects of structural racism on reducing employment opportunities for Black Americans, it is unclear whether Black participants will reap the same benefits of

A pilot study of the individual placement and support model for patients with chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is an evidence-based work rehabilitation model with well-documented effects for people with mental illness. The model has, however, never been tested out for people with chronic pain. This pilot study aimed to investigate chronic pain patients' experiences with the IPS job support model. METHODS: We recruited eight consecutive patients referred for various chronic pain conditions at a hospital outpatient pain clinic. They were offered IPS job support as an integrated part of their interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation. The patients' experienc

Enhancing job-site training of supported workers with autism: a reemphasis on simulation.

Currently recommended practice in supported work emphasizes training job skills to workers with severe disabilities while on the job. Early behavioral research indicated that skills needed in natural environments could also be trained in simulated settings. We compared job-site plus simulation training for teaching job skills to supported workers with autism to provision of training exclusively on the job. Job-site training occurred in a small publishing company during the regular work routine, and simulation training occurred in an adult education site for people with severe disabilities. Two

[Workplace environment in continuing employment from the perspectives of former family caregivers: Based on free-response comments from a web survey of employees at large-scale corporations].

Objectives Although previous research has shown that those who quit their jobs for caregiving have underutilized support systems and experienced a lack of employer understanding, there are few reports on how employees with caregiving responsibilities manage to continue their careers. This study aimed to clarify the workplace environment for continuing employment by focusing on the experiences of former family caregivers. Methods Of the 5,695 former family caregivers, 519 freely described their experiences in a survey on work-care balance conducted in 2024 among large-scale corporations. Influencing factors of employment decisions among physical education majors: The mediating role of psychological resilience and the moderating role of gender.

BACKGROUND: Physical education majors often encounter distinct challenges in making employment-related decisions, yet limited empirical research has explored the psychological factors influencing these decisions. METHODS: A total of 908 physical education majors from universities across China were surveyed using a random sampling method. Standardized and validated instruments were employed to measure active coping strategies, peer support, maladaptive perfectionism, psychological resilience, and employment decisions. A moderated mediation model was constructed and tested using partial least s

Functional improvement is a better predictor of steady work than medical improvement for individuals with mental health conditions.

The Supported Employment Demonstration (SED) offered vocational and mental health services to recently denied disability benefit applicants with mental health conditions, along with other multiple co-morbidities, to evaluate the impact of evidence-based interventions on fostering employment and downstream benefits such as self-sufficiency, improved quality of life, and improved mental health. Using the SED public use file, we analyzed work outcomes for the study participants in relation to functional improvement, as measured by the Work Disability Functional Assessment Battery, vs. medical imp

Experience in developing a Transitional Employment Program (TEP) for the psychiatric patients in an acute general hospital in Hong Kong.

This paper describes the application of a transitional employment program (TEP) for psychiatric patients in Hong Kong. The TEP and its values in psychiatric rehabilitation are introduced. The differences between TEP and Supported Employment (SE) were also highlighted. A TEP for psychiatric patients in an acute general hospital is outlined. Interviews of employer and trainees showed that, apart from increasing income, qualitative changes in the trainees were observed such as increased self-confidence, improved assertive and social skills, and increased work tolerance. Ongoing objective measurem

The Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 expands employment opportunities for persons with developmental disabilities.

The primary purpose of the ADA is the full inclusion of persons with disabilities within their communities. The ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in the areas of employment, transportation, public accommodations, telecommunications, and state and local government agencies. The person described in this report encountered some of this discrimination. He successfully obtained paid community-integrated employment only after overcoming major obstacles and barriers, the greatest being transportation. In our highly mobile society, reliable transportation is essential for the acq

Effectiveness of employment-based interventions for persons experiencing homelessness: A systematic review.

Employment is frequently desired by persons who experience homelessness yet is often elusive. Little is known about the range and effectiveness of employment-based interventions evaluated in existing literature on key psychosocial outcomes including employment participation, mental well-being, housing tenure, community integration and substance use. To identify and synthesise existing studies, we conducted a systematic review of effectiveness using the methodology proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA)
