Safety assessment of starch-based personal care products: Nanocapsules and pickering emulsions.

The safety profile of the ingredients used in topical dosage forms and its evaluation is an issue of utmost importance. A suitable equilibrium between safety and efficacy is crucial before promoting a dermatological product. The aim of this work was to assess the safety and biological effects of starch-based vehicles (St-BV) used in such products. The hazard, exposure and dose-response assessment were used to characterize the risk of each ingredient. The EpiSkin™ assay and human repeat insult patch tests were performed to compare the theoretical safety assessment to in vitro and in vivo data.

Oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by highly charged polyelectrolyte-grafted silica nanoparticles.

Fully sulfonated poly(styrenesulfonate) brushes were grown from the surface of colloidal silica particles and used to prepare stable trichloroethylene-in-water and heptane-in-water Pickering emulsions. These particles were highly charged and colloidally stable in water but could not be dispersed in trichloroethylene or heptane. Both two-phase (emulsion plus neat water) and three-phase (emulsion separating neat oil and water phases) systems were observed, with water-continuous emulsion phases in all cases. Emulsion phases containing as much as 83% (v/v) oil were stable for over six months. Poly

Lipid emulsions and reticuloendothelial system function in healthy and burned guinea pigs.

The effect of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) regimens containing various quantities of long-chain triglyceride (LCT) and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) emulsions on bacterial clearance and organ sequestration was evaluated in healthy and burned guinea pigs. In healthy guinea pigs, increasing the LCT component of TPN to 75% or greater of the nonprotein calories resulted in hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, a significant reduction in the sequestration of intravenously administered Pseudomonas aeruginosa by the liver and spleen, and a markedly increased clearance of bacteria into the lung. In burned

Emulsion gels loaded with pancreatic lipase: Preparation from spontaneously made emulsions and assessment of the rheological, microscopic and cargo release properties.

Emulsion gels are solidified emulsions, which can be used for delivery of both hydrophilic and lipophilic substances. In this research, at first fish oil-in-water (O/W; 10% w/w) emulsions were prepared through the spontaneous emulsification technique. As emulsifier, a blend of the small-molecule surfactant tween 80, and either low-acyl (LaG) or high-acyl (HaG) gellan was used. For making fully stable (100% stability index) emulsions, a 10-fold higher concentration of LaG than HaG in the emulsion aqueous phase was required. The difference in gellan concentration resulted in a bigger mean drop s

Oxidative aging of plant protein-stabilized emulsions and its impact on carotenoid bioaccessibility.

Plant proteins are widely used as natural emulsifiers for carotenoid-enriched foods, yet most delivery studies evaluate freshly prepared emulsions instead of products stored before consumption. During storage, lipids, interfacial proteins, and carotenoids undergo concurrent oxidation. Lipid hydroperoxides and secondary products can modify adsorbed proteins, while carotenoids are prone to isomerization, epoxidation, and oxidative cleavage. Accordingly, the interfacial layer encountered during digestion may differ markedly from that formed after homogenization. This difference can affect pepsin

An Ethanol/Ammonia Dual-Responsive Membrane for Separating Complex Emulsions via Vapor Stimulation.

Oily wastewater, with its complex composition, is creating a growing demand for smart materials with tunable wettability that can adapt to changing environmental conditions. However, their practical application in oil-water separation is still limited by issues such as long response time and operational complexity. An ethanol/ammonia dual-responsive mixed cellulose ester membrane was prepared by grafting SiO2 with fluorocarbon molecules (FS-61). Through inducing the polar hydrophilic groups (-COO-) and nonpolar oleophobic groups (-C6Fx) by ammonia and ethanol, the FS@SiO2 membrane achieves a s

Rheology and Amylase Resistance of Calcium-Enriched Calorie-Dense Emulsions for Dysphagia Management.

This study examines how changes in salivary α-amylase and calcium affect the rheological properties and stability of food emulsions thickened with Locust Bean Gum (LBG) and Pre-gelatinized Rice Flour (RF), containing 10% Medium-chain Triglycerides (MCT). Increasing the LBG: RF ratio improves resistance to simulated saliva dilution. The 1:4 (LBG: RF) emulsion maintained an apparent viscosity within the NDD nectar-like range after simulated saliva addition, making it suitable for patients with dysphagia. Calcium sources from lactate (LC) and gluconate (GC) enhanced the emulsion's resistance to α

Effects of Oil Properties on Stability Behavior of High-Energy-Density Fat Emulsions.

Foods for special medical purposes play a critical role in clinical nutritional support, especially oil-in-water emulsions characterized as having high energy density, which could provide efficient energy for patients with insufficient intake or those requiring fluid restriction. The included oil types are the critical determinants of emulsion stability, which, in turn, governs digestive behavior, absorption efficiency, and ultimate bioavailability of the delivered nutrients. However, such emulsions face stability challenges during storage and application. In the present study, high-energy-den

Enhanced oxidative stability of O/W Pickering emulsions based on whey protein nanogels.

Lipid oxidation severely limits the stability of food emulsions. This study aimed to improve the interfacial protection of whey protein emulsions by developing nanogel WPI based O/W Pickering emulsion (GWE). Emulsions stabilised by non-heated WPI (NWE) and heat-treated WPI (HWE) were prepared for comparison. Results showed that GWE offered protection against metal induced lipid oxidation and during accelerated storage at 50 °C for 9 days, with significantly lowest amounts of hydroperoxides (1.30 mM) and MDA (8.8 μM). Headspace GC-MS analysis also confirmed that GWE produced less volatile oxida

Optical Detection of Proteins Using Microgel-Stabilized Pickering Liquid Crystal-in-Water Emulsions.

Herein, we present a novel liquid crystal (LC)-based sensing platform utilizing microgel-stabilized Pickering LC droplets dispersed in water for simple and label-free detection of proteins in an aqueous environment. This could be achieved by tailoring the surface of 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) LC droplets dispersed in aqueous medium through the interfacial adsorption of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgel particles, followed by the introduction of model surfactants, such as anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate and cationic dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide. These surfactant/microgel com

Sodium caseinate/cellulose nanofiber-stabilized Pickering emulsions: A study on lipid absorption regulation.

This study aimed to develop a sustainable and bio-based nano-additive (sodium caseinate/cellulose nanofibers (SC/CNF) complex) to modulate liquid-based oil-in-water (O/W) colloid interfaces, which function as a fat control agent to slow lipid digestion. Edible protein (SC) was grafted onto CNF through facile electrostatic attraction, which reduces solvent and chemical usage for greener process. The physicochemical properties of SC/CNF showed that adding SC increased the interfacial bonding between CNF particles, resulting in higher interfacial pressure by forming dense and compact layers of SC

Oil/water interface behavior of hesperidin methylchalcone and its application in nano-emulsions.

The behavior of hesperidin methylchalcone (HMC) at the oil/water interface was examined through experimental and molecular simulation methods, and a nano-emulsions based on HMC was subsequently fabricated. The findings indicated that HMC spontaneously aggregated at the oil-water interface, leading to a reduction in interfacial tension and an increase in interfacial thickness. Furthermore, its glycoside and benzene ring showed tendencies to interact with water and medium-chain triglyceride, respectively. The HMC addition amount (w), homogenization times (n) and homogenization pressure (p) signi

Arginine-Loaded Nano-Calcium-Phosphate-Stabilized Lipiodol Pickering Emulsions Potentiates Transarterial Embolization-Immunotherapy.

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) continues to stand as a primary option for treating unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the increased tumor hypoxia and acidification will lead to the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME) featuring exhausted T cells, limiting the effectiveness of subsequent therapies following TACE. Herein, a stable water-in-oil lipiodol Pickering emulsion by employing calcium phosphate nanoparticles (CaP NPs) as stabilizers is developed and used to encapsulate L-arginine (L-Arg), which is known for its ability to modulate T-cell metabolism. Food emulsions stabilized by proteins and emulsifiers: A review of the mechanistic explorations.

The stability of food emulsions is the basis for other properties. During their production and processing, emulsions tend to become unstable due to their thermodynamic instability, and it is usually necessary to add emulsifiers and proteins to stabilize emulsions. It becomes crucial to study the intrinsic mechanisms of emulsifiers and proteins and their joint stabilization of food emulsions. This paper summarizes the research on intrinsic mechanisms of food emulsions stabilized by emulsifiers and proteins in recent years. The destabilization and stabilization of emulsions are related to the ad

Effects of Solvents, Emulsions, Cosolvents, and Complexions on Ex Vivo Mouse Myometrial Contractility.

A great need exists to develop tocolytic and uterotonic drugs that combat poor, labor-related maternal and fetal outcomes. A widely utilized method to assess novel compounds for their tocolytic and uterotonic efficacy is the isometric organ bath contractility assay. Unfortunately, water-insoluble compounds can be difficult to test using the physiological, buffer-based, organ bath assay. Common methods for overcoming solubility issues include solvent variation, cosolvency, surfactant or complexion use, and emulsification. However, these options for drug delivery or formulation can impact tissue
