Investigations into shaking mink syndrome: an encephalomyelitis of unknown cause in farmed mink (Mustela vison) kits in Scandinavia.

An apparently novel neurological disease clinically characterized by shaking, tremors, seizures, staggering gait, and ataxia was first observed in farmed mink kits in Denmark in 2000 and subsequently in Sweden, Denmark, and Finland in 2001, and again in Denmark in 2002. Lymphoplasmacytic encephalomyelitis was found in the affected kits. The lesions were most severe in the brainstem and cerebellum and consisted of neuronal degeneration and necrosis, neuronophagia, focal and diffuse gliosis, perivascular cuffs formed by lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages, and segmental loss of Purkinje ce

Intestinal microsporidia infection among cat owners and non-pet owners in Iran: a case-control study.

Microsporidia is a group of spore-forming microorganisms with zoonotic potential. This study aimed to compare intestinal microsporidia infections in cat owners and non-pet owners. In total, 210 fecal samples were collected from indoor cats, cat owners, and non-pet owners. DNA extraction was performed and the small subunit ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene was amplified. To characterize the genotypes, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) fragment was amplified and sequenced. The phylogenetic trees were drawn to evaluate the relationship among Enterocytozoon bieneusi isolates. Two (2.9%) and one (1

Cryptosporidium parvum and Enterocytozoon bieneusi in American Mustangs and Chincoteague ponies.

The prevalence of Cryptosporidium and microsporidia in feral horses, which have minimal contact with livestock and humans, is not currently known. We report the findings of a study on Cryptosporidium and microsporidia in 34 Mustangs and 50 Chincoteague ponies in the USA. Fecal samples were screened for presence of Cryptosporidium spp. by analysis of the small-subunit rRNA (SSU) and 60-kDa glycoprotein (gp60) genes, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon spp. by analysis of the ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region (ITS). Cryptosporidium spp. and E. bieneusi were detected in 28/

Opportunistic pneumonia caused by E. cuniculi in mice immunosuppressed with cyclophosphamide.

Opportunistic fungal pneumonia is a cause of concern in immunocompromised patients due to its high morbidity and mortality rates. One such opportunistic agent affecting immunocompromised patients is the microsporidia called Encephalitozoon cuniculi. This study aimed to evaluate pneumonia caused by E. cuniculi in mice treated with the immunosuppressive agent cyclophosphamide (Cy). This study also aimed to describe the immune cells associated with the microsporidial pneumonia. C57BL/6 mice were infected intravenously with E. cuniculi spores and treated with Cy (75 mg/kg/week, intraperitoneally).

Naturally Occurring Secondary Renal Hyperparathyroidism and Fibrous Osteodystrophy in a Pet Rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus).

Rabbits with end-stage kidney failure often develop hypercalcaemia and osteosclerosis. Secondary renal hyperparathyroidism and fibrous osteodystrophy can be experimentally induced in rabbits through nephrectomy and a low-calcium:high-phosphorus diet, but clinical case reports are rare. A thin, mixed-breed, neutered male rescue rabbit was brought to a veterinary clinic due to lameness of the right hind limb and gait difficulties. Radiographs showed severe osteodystrophy. Additionally, there was a displaced, ununited simple fracture in the right mid-femur and a healed simple fracture in the righ

Dysregulated IL-7/IL-7R-CD132 Axis and Intestinal Microsporidiosis in Crohn's Disease.

Crohn's disease (CD) is frequently accompanied by T-cell lymphopenia and impaired mucosal immunity, conditions that may predispose to intestinal microsporidiosis by Encephalitozoon cuniculi. This prospective case-control study examined the interplay between IL-7/IL-7 receptor (IL-7R) signaling and anti-E. cuniculi immune responses in 50 CD patients and 50 matched healthy controls. Serum IL-7 and anti-E. cuniculi IgG, IgM, IgA and IgE were quantified by ELISA, while intestinal expression of IL-7, CD127 (IL-7Rα) and CD132 (IL-7Rγ) was assessed by RT-PCR. Protein levels of IL-7 and caspase-3 were

Evaluation of the use of vinpocetine in microsporidia infections.

Encephalitozoon intestinalis is a species of microsporidia that causes serious health problems, especially in immunocompromised individuals. The drug of choice for treatment today is albendazole. However, partial effects, resistance, and serious side effects are reported. Recently, vinpocetine has become a safe drug that is being investigated for the treatment of various diseases. In this study, the anti-microsporidial efficacies of vinpocetine, albendazole, and vinpocetine- albendazole combination, and how these combinations affected pathogen-induced tissue damage were assessed. In the study,

Microsporidiosis: An emerging opportunistic parasitic infection.

Microsporidia are obligate intracellular, primitive eukaryotic parasites that infect a diverse array of vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. Phylogenetic studies have demonstrated their close relationship to fungi, though they possess unique structural and genomic features. With approximately 220 genera and 1,700 species identified, they exhibit considerable diversity in host range and pathogenic potential. These organisms are widely distributed across humans, animals, and environmental reservoirs, and are increasingly recognized as clinically significant pathogens. They are particularly associa

Microsporidia keratoconjunctivitis identified as an emerging zoonotic threat from pet parrots: Clinical and metagenomic next-generation sequencing evidence.

Microsporidia are opportunistic, obligate intracellular fungi capable of causing keratoconjunctivitis. Because the clinical manifestations of microsporidia keratoconjunctivitis are indistinguishable from those of other etiologies, and the organism is difficult to culture, its diagnosis is challenging. The transmission routes of microsporidia keratoconjunctivitis remain poorly defined, and zoonotic sources have long been suspected but rarely confirmed. Between September 2024 and October 2025, a total of 15 confirmed cases of microsporidia keratoconjunctivitis were identified at Peking Universit

Bilateral phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in a pet rabbit with cataracts.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of cataracts in rabbits is a common reason for consultation in veterinary ophthalmology. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 6-year-old female Lop rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was referred with a 3-month history of bilateral cataracts. The owner noted that the rabbit was frequently bumping into obstacles. Physical examination was unremarkable. Routine hemogram and biochemistry panel were within usual values, and Encephalitozoon cuniculi were not detected by serology. A complete ophthalmological examination revealed bilateral hypermature cataracts causing total blindness. Bilatera

Extraction-free, filter-based template preparation for rapid and sensitive PCR detection of pathogenic parasitic protozoa.

Within the last several years, the protozoan parasites Cyclospora cayetanensis, Cryptosporidium parvum, and microsporidia have become recognized as important, rapidly emerging human pathogens in immunocompromised and immunocompetent individuals. Since the early 1990s, many of the reported outbreaks of enteric illness caused by these microorganisms have been attributed to food- and water-borne contamination. Many inherent obstacles affect the success of current surveillance and detection methods used to monitor and control levels of contamination by these pathogens. Unlike methods that incorpor

Molecular evidence of Enterocytozoon bieneusi in arid urban landscapes of shiraz cockroaches (Blattodea), Southwest Iran: Implications for urban public health surveillance.

Microsporidia, particularly Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Encephalitozoon intestinalis, are emerging fungal pathogens of global concern, causing severe gastrointestinal and systemic infections in immunocompromised individuals. Cockroaches (Blattodea), as synanthropic pests, are potential mechanical vectors for disseminating these pathogens in urban environments. Despite their clinical significance, data on the role of cockroaches in transmitting microsporidia in arid regions remain scarce. This study assessed the contamination of cockroaches in Shiraz, Iran, with E. bieneusi and E. intestinalis

Endoparasites of rabbits and hares.

Nematode, cestode, protozoan, microsporidian, and pentastomid parasites affect domesticated and wild rabbits, hares, and jackrabbits of the genera Brachylagus, Lepus, Oryctolagus, Pentalagus, and Sylvilagus. Some endoparasite infections are of limited or no significance, whereas others have potentially profound consequences. Accurate identification of endoparasites of rabbits, hares, and jackrabbits is an important facet of the work of veterinary pathologists engaged in lagomorph pathology. Here I review endoparasites from the pathologist's perspective, focusing on pathogenesis, lesions, and i
